The bundle seems good, any of the two Noctua coolers you list will be fine. As for your fan configuration. Just try it and see what your temps are.

Do you have any recommendation for Case Fans? I mean I read up reviews on Noctua Heatsinks as being one of the best air based coolers on the market, but I know very little about the current best in terms of case fans.

I outfied my case with a couple of Arctic F12's but that was back in 2012. For all know things have changed.

Furmark also stresses the GPU differently, games could still cause problems. It's just a terrible "test" all-around. Firestrike, Timespy, and Heaven are some of the most demanding benches. If you get crashes during games you will probably get them in those too. Since they don't seem to happen immediately Heaven could be the best bet to find problems since you can just let that loop. Have to pay for 3DMark to do that with the other two I think.

You could try underclocking your card and seeing if that helps. It could also be faulty VRAM causing errors similar to faulty RAM, but I'm not aware of anything like memtest for VRAM.

Thanks for the info. Hoping one of those yields more realistic results then.

I tried underclocking by 100MHz a while back and still got a crash, I guess it could need to be done even more, but if that's what I end up having to do I probably need to replace the card I would think.

Funny, I have the same issue, and it seems to only happen in WoW. I've got the same CPU as you, but a different graphics card. Makes me wonder if it's a CPU issue, it also didn't happen before the last patch hit.

I did get it prior to the patch, so not sure if the root cause is identical. I'll be sure to post if I find a solution though

If there's nothing wrong with the ones you have just keep using those. Best is an opinion, I use NZXT, Noctua, Phanteks and Corsair fans personally. For me I just look at cfm and price and get what is good at the price I want to pay.

Guys, I'm trying to upgrade my GPU, but I can't decide GTX 980 TI vs GTX 1070 vs GTX 1080 >-<

I don't plan to go higher than 1080p yet, so I'm trying to reach 1080p and some smooth fps with my 144hz asus led...

I'm planning to upgrade y ram to 16gb ddr3 2400hz too

Here's my current rig:

Both the 980 Ti and the 1070 are around the same price, however the 1070 has the benefit of being the newer Pascal architecture. Also the 1070 in some cases beats out the 980 Ti on some occasions.

The 1080 GTX is naturally the best of the best, however the question to ask is such an upgrade worth $650 to you?

I'll be honest. I recently upgraded from a HD 7950 to a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1070 GTX and it was huge world of difference. (I could finally run The Witcher 3 at 1080p@60fps for one thing with hairworks and everything set to Ultra)

The GTX 680 is slightly better than the HD7950, so going to a 1070 GTX or even 1080 GTX will be a HUGE improvement.

Also you have a newer generation CPU, I am on the 3rd Gen i5 3570k, while you have the 4th gen 4690k.

I'd say you can't go wrong with either a 1070 or the 1080 (If you want to pay the extra $200 over the 1070 GTX that is)

I did some tests on a few of my older PC games, Borderlands 2 with the framerate unlocked goes upwards to 180 to 200 fps, Grid Autosport hovers around 120 to 125 fps, however I have a 60hz HDTV, so I don't get any benefit to these higher frame rates without running into the issue of screen tearing as my display max frequency can't keep up with the high rendered framerates I'll get.

So you having a 144mhz monitor will benefit nicely in that regard.

Would like some advice with my build:

Case: Fractal Design NODE 202
PSU: Corsair SF600 SFF 600 W Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold Power Supply Unit
MB: Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 Mini-ITX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170N-Gaming 5
CPU: 6700K
CPU fan: Noctua Low-Profile Quiet CPU Cooler for Intel 115x Based Retail Cooling NH-L9I
Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz
GPU: Sapphire AMD RX 480 Nitro+ 4 GB (Will probably change it if Vega meets my expectations
HHD: Toshiba X300 5TB Desktop 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm Internal Hard Drive
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III
Screen: LG 34UC88-B

I'll mainly use it for gaming and Wii/PS2 emulation. I'll use software like Blender, Photoshop, Unity and maybe do some video editing.

My questions:
Should I overclock in such a small case? or will heating be an issue?
If I shouldn't overclock, should I still go with 6700k for higher clock speeds and better emulation?
If I'm not overclocking my CPU should I change my MB?
Should I add fans to where the GPU is? I don't know which fans to install but I've seen some people install extra fans on the Node 202.
Is m.2 necessary if I'll just install windows on it? Does it fit on my MB? I'm mainly confused by the different types of M.2.
Should I go with this build?

Thanks!

if you need as high a refresh as possible on future games, the 1080 is about the best you're going to get reasonably, but otherwise the 1070 is probably the smarter choice. The 1070 isn't crazy expensive, new architecture that runs incredibly cool, and you can save the 200$ and put towards the next upgrade.

The M.2 will work with this motherboard. I recommend the 6700k because emulation is generally bound to the CPU, so a faster CPU will result in ultimately better performance.

Although the newer Dolphin Emu has some sort of breakthrough with DX12 so a newer DX12 enabled GPU is always a benefit here.

I am not familiar with ITX or HTPC builds and generally opt for the traditional Tower with an ATX build, so I'm not the best person to ask on this subject, but from what I see there isn't any particularly wrong with the setup you have.

Generally looks ok. I don't think I'd be overclocking much if at all in that, but it'll depend on your normal temperatures.

Why 3000mhz dram? Are you wanting to overclock? The faster speeds also don't necessarily mean better performance. anyway, could save a few bucks and swap the 480 for a 1060, which might run cooler anyway.

When did the 212 suddenly become a bad choice? It still outperforms most AIO liquid coolers...

Not even close, unless your sole criterion is price.

Any recommendation for the CPU cooler? I have no idea how to choose this part.

was wondering that myself, he seems to be the only one I've seen here who keeps saying that. A poor choice? I'd say a stock cooler is a poor choice , the 212 is great for the price imo. At least suggest a different cooler if you're going to say its a bad cooler

If someone is rubbing pennies together for their build, sure. If you can't afford anything better, get the 212. But the dude asking for advice was buying nice stuff. On a build like his skimping $30 on the cooler is a dumb way to save money.

Any single tower cooler from BeQuiet!, Noctua, Phanteks, or Cryorig will outperform the 212 on temps, noise, and ease of installation. Any double tower cooler from them will go even further. If the builder has a windowed side panel and doesn't like the look of big heatsinks, then Corsair, Fractal, EK, AlphaCool, NZXT, etc. all make really nice AIO coolers.

Anyone who tells you that the 212 is a good choice hasn't tried the alternatives.

Recommend me good a mechanical keyboard gaf...done with Razer

I bought the Rosewill RK-9000V2 when it was on sale for $64 a few weeks ago, it's normally around $70-90. It's a nice, full size keyboard with Cherry MX switches. I got the Browns, but Red and Blue models are also available. Really basic, no LEDs or anything.

I'd also look into the Ducky One. I hear nothing but good things about it and was about to order one, but the Rosewill sale was to good to pass up.

Definitely check out switches and see which ones you prefer, then choose a model.

And read the OP of the mechanical keyboard thread: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=458496

TBH I know almost nothing about ram, I just saw higher numbers for cheap and thought it's a good choice.

The reason why I'm choosing 480 over 1060 is because of free sync, I found 34UC88-B on Mass Drop for around 650$ and 60$ shipping. If I'm going for something like the predator, I'll have to pay over 300$ for the shipping only.

Backside panel 80% done. Some touch-ups and matte-lacquer coating to seal the airbrushed painting.

That's what I'm hoping. I've had the same OC for about a month now but I never noticed issues before.

In my experience, the best tests for a stable overclock are the different stress tests in 3DMark - try all of them and see if they complete successfully (Sky Diver, Fire Strike and Time Spy).
Running Unigine Heaven for at least an hour is another good one. Furmark/EVGA OC Scanner can usually keep going forever in my experience and the artifact scanner has never found anything for me.

If you don't need it ASAP why not just wait a bit for Kaby Lake and the 200 series boards? Shouldn't cost much more if at all for the comparable parts, ie i7-7700K

get a 1070. the 980ti/1070 are similar to each other but the 1070 is newer. the 1080 is way too much performance and money for just staying at 1080p. some say the 1070 is completely overkill for 1080p and is more of a 1440p card but as time goes on it'll last longer at 1080p than 1440p.

Do I get a 1080 or do I buy another 980 ti and run them in sli?

From the benchmarks, the gains of a 1080 over a 980 ti don't really live up to a £600 purchase, but for £300 I could get similar if not better performance from a second 980 ti (depending on sli compatibility in certain games)

Alright GAF. Looking to upgrade my GPU. I have 2x 7970s right now and think it's time I moved onto a single card setup. Any of the new cards releasing worth picking up? Looking at no more than $300. I'd prefer to stay with AMD.

I'm running a 2500k, which I'll probably upgrade soonish, but holding off since it would require me to get a new mobo.

Well, right now your only real Option for AMD is the RX 480. The Fury is over $300 and no one knows when, if, or even what the 490 will be.

Edit:

Found these two GTA V videos so you can sort of compare the two...

7970 Crossfire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMbjK5bYap4

Single RX 480 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp7Ko7LYUaE

Looks like you'll get very marginally better performance but without the Crossfire issues... in GTA V at least...

I recommend that you read a bit on the air flow of your case and see what the users of this particular case recommend (on reddit and YT). I've read this detailed set up for my case (NZXT H440) and it was illuminating and got me to better understand how to best utilize the fans for it. It's worth a read even if you don't have the case.

Would like some advice with my build:

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III

Is m.2 necessary if I'll just install windows on it? Does it fit on my MB? I'm mainly confused by the different types of M.2.

Thanks!

Keep in mind that if you wanted a M.2 SSD for its famously outrageous speed, this isn't the drive to get. This version gives roughly the same performance of a regular Samsung SSD but in a smaller M.2 form factor, around 500 MB/s (vs. NVMe's ridiculous 1700 MB/s). That's not bad, but just FYI.

The faster M.2 SSDs use the NVMe software interface and usually connects to a PCI-e slot. Check this comparison to see the difference in read & write speed between the two.

Your motherboard supports M.2 NVMe, so it's your decision on whether it's worth the extra markup.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
So what do I need to do to transfer my win 10 upgrade license to a new cpu/mb setup? Just remove the key from the old setup first?

Hey guys,

I have a Core i7-4790(3.6) 16GB with a 1440p monitor 60hz.

If I have $500 to use. Would it be best to just buy a 1070 gtx or

Buy all new parts? Obviously I would be spending more than $500.

I already bought a R5 define($89) because if I build a new comp or keep my old one, I need a new case anyway cause the one of have now is shit. My GTX 970 goes all the way up to 90 degrees when playing OW.

If I do build a new comp I was looking at:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/WCjpsY
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/WCjpsY/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($227.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($150.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $478.74
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-08-29 11:45 EDT-0400

Everything else I can source from my old pc such as an optical drive(LOL), 650 Corsair PSU and ssd/hard drives.

And obviously a GTX 1070, was looking at the ASUS ROG STRIX-GTX1070 - $459.99.

To add to my research I looked up what the difference is for games between 6th gen and 4th gen pcs pertaining to gaming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX0aeQSQkGM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjEgEUo4f_I

Obviously there is going to be fps difference but 10 or so fps doesn't seem too high for the cost savings especially if I am always above 60fps.

I also have a two monitor set up 1080p 60hz and 1440p 60hz so if a game can't hit 60 fps on the 1440p I can use the 1080p. It wouldn't look as good but anything other than native res normally looks terrible.

Plenty of recommendations over at the GAF mechanical keyboard thread as well as r/mechanicalkeyboards

I just ordered Corsair K70 , MX Brown. Wanted it for a long time, finally hit the price I could pay (90GBP over at Amazon.co.uk).

Yeah I was looking at the k70 and the strafe. Also I guess the g502 is still the preferred mouse...I haven't seen that new gaming mouse from logitech out in the wild yet.

Ok Potential Newbie PC Gamer Here Needing Serious Advice Please!

Been looking at building a pc for a very very long time but not had the full desire to do so for several reasons;

- Already got a PS4, soon to possibly be a PS4 Neo.
- Got a WiiU and will probably be interested in the NX, subject to price and eventual interest dependent on its usp.
- Cost. Who doesn't want the best they can get? Once I start looking at building a pc, it just gets more and more expensive once you get the bug for even better parts lol!
- Me and my son have a ps4 each and we share digital games so effectively feels like a 2 for 1 price!

Reason to want a pc;
- Son and I want to share it. I would have it during the week and he would have it on the weekends. He does Boxing so has no time during the week and I can use it during the day for work, evenings for gaming. I can always play my ps4 at weekends.

We'd like to buy/play;
- Old classics such as Doom, Quakes, Original Tomb Raiders, Mysts etc.
- Free to play Unreal Tournament (just for laughs as not looking to use mouse & keyboard).
- Obduction.
- New Games coming out.
- Would love to do some modding to titles such as Fallout 3/4, Skyrim (especially), Witcher 3 (1st Person).

Other;
- Looking to run games at 1080p and 60fps at best possible looks.
- Wanting a mid tower size at biggest as will be moving it each weekend and we think the mid towers look sleeker.

Would love some answers to these really important questions I can't find definitive answers for please?:

1. Will most games support a controller? What about the older classics?

2. Will most games support vibration/rumble?

3. What kind of results could I expect in Modding Skyrim? How good could we get this to look and run? Any details on this? If we can get it looking amazing, we'd even be happy with a 30fps locked.

4. Going to game on relatively modern/new TV's only. Will we get screen tearing and/or stuttering because we're not going to be using Gsync or Freesync monitors? Will Adaptive or Dynamic VSync sort this out?

5. Would an RX480 be better for the build than the 1060 we're looking to use? Will DX12/Vulkan in future games be relevant to this decision?

6. How well will this build be able to run VR, if at all?

7. CPU. Like what's been said in this thread already, the CPU is perhaps more than adequate for 1080p/60fps but trying to somewhat buy for a bit of future proofing. Is this a wise decision and/or is it safer to ensure 1080p/60fps having this CPU?

8. MOTHERBOARD. Originally looking at Gigabyte GA-Z170MX Gaming 5 Micro ATX but this was £144. How does the motherboard we're looking at now for £55 compare? We do know we can't sli/crossfire with the £55 board but you can't sli with the 1060 anyway.

= Thanks to cHinzo I now know that I would need the Z170 if I want to overclock.

9. Loosing SPDIF connection on the new motherboard, is there any way I can still connect my older hi-fi system that doesn't have HDMI and still get Dolby 5.1?

10. Originally looked at MSI Gaming X GTX 1060 but after checking specs, this JetStream has a higher clock and lower db so is the JetStream better? The Gaming X was @ £275.

11. Case chose because it has good reviews and looks ok enough as well as being a mid tower and white.

12. Power Supply chose as although may be overkill, looking to perhaps future proof. Are we right in thinking going for a fully modular would be better especially as using a mid tower case and therefore don't want a load of wires everywhere we don't need? Tried to see if this was a Tier 1 psu per Tom's Hardware but couldn't find any info. Heard this psu can have a whine noise but not sure?

13. Does have a fully modular PSU mean I have still got to buy the wires or will they come with the other parts?

= Thanks to cHinzo I now know I'll get all the wires I need.
14. Included a cheap as chips Optical Drive just for those instances when might need to rip a CD lol!

15. When we set/build pc, will we need a wired keyboard/mouse as the wireless one won't be connected?

16. Got a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse already so not looking to buy any other for now.

17. Already got a wireless 360 controller, will I need to add Bluetooth somehow to this pc?

18. Not putting a wireless network in so need to use Ethernet as trying to save money. Did see a wireless adapter @ £20 though.

19. Still need an Operating System of Windows 10 to buy? My son is going to College in UK so can he get Windows 10 cheaper somehow as a student? I've looked and can't find any info on how to do this?

20. Will we need any extra fans, fan controllers or anything else missed?

21. Can a pc be placed in x1 room but be streamed to play games elsewhere in the house somehow?

22. Will Sony 7.1 Ps4 Surround Sound headphones work on pc in surround sound mode like in ps4? I'm pretty sure I've researched this in the past and the answer is no?

23. How much time do we need to spend when we buy a game to get it looking/running as good as possible? Are there any particular traits/tips to take into account?

We're obviously very inexperienced when it comes to pc's and gaming on them but once we've got the answers to the above, we're looking to start learning!

Thanks guys/gals for any input.

All you'd need is a card with HDMI 2.0. Radeon RX460 might just be the cheapest card capable of HDMI2.0.

E: Scratch the below, 750Ti doesn't support 2.0. Lemme check.
750Ti? No need to worry about extra power but capable of driving a 4k display @ 60hz.

The RX 460 is $109 (the 2GB version, I bought the Powercolor Red Dragon for my HTPC at this price) and has HDMI 2.0 with HDR support.

Thanks. Since it's at least $100, I am half thinking of moving my 7950 to her computer and get a new card for mine. What's the current consensus on 480 vs. 1060/70? Lost track of the debate in Juneish.

I don't think it's worth it for you to upgrade to Skylake. Your i7 is still good and you have plenty of RAM. I have similar specs to yours except I have the K variant of that i7 and I've never felt like I needed an upgrade.

Get yourself a new video card like a 1070 and you'll notice the difference immediately.

Thanks. Since it's at least $100, I am half thinking of moving my 7950 to her computer and get a new card for mine. What's the current consensus on 480 vs. 1060/70? Lost track of the debate in Juneish.

1070 is a great 1080p/1440p card, with 1440p being the sweet spot.

The 1060 is generally better than the 480 in performance and wattage, although sometimes the 480 can be had for less compared to 1060.

We're obviously very inexperienced when it comes to pc's and gaming on them but once we've got the answers to the above, we're looking to start learning!

Thanks guys/gals for any input.

I'll try to answer some of these.

1. Yes, basically 98% of all modern releases (since 2008) supports a controller, i.e. Xbox 360/Xbox One controller natively. If you want to use a DS4 you need DS4Windows or something similar running in the background.

2. Yes, if the game supports a controller it supports rumble.

3. 1060 is a great card and Skyrim is an old game, and even with mods you'll get great results. It depends on the mods of course; you can make anything unplayable pretty easy, but if you're sticking to more popular stuff I think you're safe. And if you're targeting 30fps you can easily put some heavy stuff on.

4. V-Sync (and other variations) or Fast Sync will sort that out, yes. You don't need a G-Sync monitor, and you won't get any stuttering just because you're using a TV. Some games don't like multi-monitors though, so if you're using 2-3 monitors at the same time, try disabling them if you're having issues.

5. -

6. It's definitely VR-capable (it's above the recommended spec for both headsets), but how well is hard to tell, especially since the market is still in it's early days. Things will change and games will be more demanding in the future, as usual.

7. Depends what you mean by future proofing. You can buy an i7 and hope games will perform better with HT (which is exclusive to i7s) in the future. Or buy a more expensive CPU ... but it's not worth it imo.

8. -

9. What do you need Dolby 5.1 for? PC games are PCM (uncompressed) 5.1 audio, so you can use normal analog cables to get 5.1. I think you can send 5.1 via GPU (HDMI), but I'm not sure.

10. -

11. -

12. Modular is always worth it if you can afford it. EVGA is a great brand as well. Not sure about Tier 1.

13. You don't have to worry about cables, at least not for now. You'll get what you need. All power cables are included with the PSU, and other data cables (like SATA) are included with the motherboard.

14. -

15. Not sure I'm reading this right. The keyboard/mouse won't be connected? Why not? Or do you mean to ask if it works without any installation/drivers? if so, it should absolutely work fine. If not, it's an old/bad keyboard/mouse.

16. -

17. You'll need a Wireless Receiver. I'm not actually sure where you can get one these days. Take a look at some online retailers and see if they sell it; if not, you can buy one of the unofficial ones on Ebay for cheap. Look for Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver.

18. That's fine, just plug the Ethernet cable into the motherboard.

19. That's usually the case, yeah, but I can't tell for sure in your case. Should say something on their website about MSDNA.

20. No, you don't need them.

21. Yes, via Steam In-home Streaming. You need to connect all parties via cables or via WiFi. I definitely recommend using cables though!

22. Not sure, what kind of cable is it? Optical?

23. No time at all (?), but that depends on a lot of things. How much do you care? If you want good performance with the best possible graphics, take a look at the settings. If there's a preset, try medium and go up from there. If you want to tweak more or you're simply not happy, try some other settings. All games offer different settings and performance, but start with things like anti-aliasing, shadows, AO and textures.

Originally posted in Digital Foundry thread on i5 and was advised on searching the Neogaf thread on building a pc as I had too many questions.

So I've come here and thought to myself ****! I really don't know where to start? Shall I go through each page and ctrl +F looking for what I want specifically or is there an easier way?

Ok Potential Newbie PC Gamer Here Needing Serious Advice Please!

Been looking at building a pc for a very very long time but not had the full desire to do so for several reasons;

Reason to want a pc;
- Son and I want to share it. I would have it during the week and he would have it on the weekends. He does Boxing so has no time during the week and I can use it during the day for work, evenings for gaming. I can always play my ps4 at weekends.

We'd like to buy/play;

Other;
- Looking to run games at 1080p and 60fps at best possible looks.
- Wanting a mid tower size at biggest as will be moving it each weekend and we think the mid towers look sleeker.

Would love some answers to these really important questions I can't find definitive answers for please?:

1. Will most games support a controller? What about the older classics?
Nearly all modern games have some form of controller support. For the genres that do not and for older games, the Steam Controller actually works really well for $35.

2. Will most games support vibration/rumble?
If it has controller support, generally it has rumble.

3. What kind of results could I expect in Modding Skyrim? How good could we get this to look and run? Any details on this? If we can get it looking amazing, we'd even be happy with a 30fps locked.
Get the 6GB version of the 1060 if you plan on running a lot of texture mods. Skyrim is almost five years old now. Even lower level cards can get great-looking results.

4. Going to game on relatively modern/new TV's only. Will we get screen tearing and/or stuttering because we're not going to be using Gsync or Freesync monitors? Will Adaptive or Dynamic VSync sort this out?
VSync will sort it.

5. Would an RX480 be better for the build than the 1060 we're looking to use? Will DX12/Vulkan in future games be relevant to this decision?
Stick with the 1060. DX12 and Vulkan are in their infancy. If and when they'd change the decision, re-evaluate.

6. How well will this build be able to run VR, if at all?
You're hitting the recommended minimum specs right now. Over time, as displays improve the GPU demand will increase significantly.

7. CPU. Like what's been said in this thread already, the CPU is perhaps more than adequate for 1080p/60fps but trying to somewhat buy for a bit of future proofing. Is this a wise decision and/or is it safer to ensure 1080p/60fps having this CPU?
Good decision.

9. Loosing SPDIF connection on the new motherboard, is there any way I can still connect my older hi-fi system that doesn't have HDMI and still get Dolby 5.1?
Get the better mobo. If that case can fit an ATX board, your mobo options will open up quite a bit. If it can't, the NZXT s340 is a midtower that can that also comes in white.

10. Originally looked at MSI Gaming X GTX 1060 but after checking specs, this JetStream has a higher clock and lower db so is the JetStream better? The Gaming X was @ £275.
Seems fine, depending on retailer/manufacturer warranty. JetStream is a primarily UK brand, right?

11. Case chose because it has good reviews and looks ok enough as well as being a mid tower and white.
See above. NZXT s340

Good budget choice.

13. Does have a fully modular PSU mean I have still got to buy the wires or will they come with the other parts?

= Thanks to cHinzo I now know I'll get all the wires I need.
14. Included a cheap as chips Optical Drive just for those instances when might need to rip a CD lol!
You don't need it.

15. When we set/build pc, will we need a wired keyboard/mouse as the wireless one won't be connected?
The board should recognize it as a generic input device through its usb dongle.

16. Got a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse already so not looking to buy any other for now.

17. Already got a wireless 360 controller, will I need to add Bluetooth somehow to this pc?
You won't need bluetooth for that controller. If you'll need it for something else, most z170 boards will have it onboard.

His school should be able to point him in the right direction. If he can't for some reason, buy a key from the r/microsoftsoftwareswap (or even cheaper places).

20. Will we need any extra fans, fan controllers or anything else missed?
Included fans should be fine. Run fans to mobo and control with software when possible.

21. Can a pc be placed in x1 room but be streamed to play games elsewhere in the house somehow?
Nvidia Shield or a long HDMI cable

22. Will Sony 7.1 Ps4 Surround Sound headphones work on pc in surround sound mode like in ps4? I'm pretty sure I've researched this in the past and the answer is no?
PS Wireless Golds will function just like they do on the PS4, minus the custom profiles from the PS4 app.

23. How much time do we need to spend when we buy a game to get it looking/running as good as possible? Are there any particular traits/tips to take into account?
Modern games: No time unless something's broken. Older games without controller support: varies. Modding: as much or as little time as you want to spend.

I'll try to answer some of these.

= I wonder if it's possible to get controller support for the older classics like Doom, Quake or TR?

= Skyrim modded sure sounds like it could be a lot better than the Remastered versions that are coming. No doubt won't be able to get it to look like how my son wants it though, which is pretty unbelievable to say the least lol!

= That's great news on the stuttering/tearing. This was my biggest concern and maybe has been a bit of me knowing nothing and finding a problem with something that isn't there!

= Would you recommend this CPU for this build?

= The Sony headphones use a USB Bluetooth type connection.

5. Still going to research some more on the RX480.

8. More than likely going to go for the Z170 motherboard so we can overclock the i5 6600k.

10. Still going to research some more on the 1060 JetStream and see which is best/price of 1060.

Much appreciated. Thumbs up!

Hi, guys
What kind of performance can I expect from this build at 2560x1080?
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Wnm2m8

1.) GPU

The 470 is a capable 1920x1080 entry level card. It can give you 60fps if you're willing to turn down settings to 'high' instead of ultra/very high (or whatever it's called). In fact it only seems to be a tiny bit slower than a 480. But beyond 1080p? It's not the right thing because of vram limitations and performance.

=1440p+

2x1080
2xTitan X (P)
=4K

(of course that's not true for all games...)

2.) CPU

The 6100 is the bare minimum, so of course it will reach its limits in some games.

Long story short: Capable entry level 1080p gaming machine, but you won't be happy at higher resolutions. 30 fps should be doable at 2560x1080 though.

Are you there "I Need a New PC" Thread? It's me, marrec.

So I'm still rocking my old i7 920 (LGA 1366 socket mobo) and still want to upgrade and saw this over on SD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5YV4RR0158&ignorebbr=1

HP Z420 Workstation Tower
Intel Xeon Processor Six-Core E5-1650 3.20GHz
8GB Ram
250GB SATA Hard Drive
DVD RW Drive
Quadro NVS 295 Video Card
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Installed

So I already have me a GTX 970 card and could slot that in this rig easily, already have a 500g SSD with all my shit, only thing I'd need to upgrade on this would be the RAM (easily and cheaply done)

Question is, does upgrading to this Xeon processor for 389 make sense, or should I just go all the way and get a new Skylake?

My 920 is almost 8 years old at this point so a 3-4 year old Processor is going to be a HUGE upgrade. lol

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a PC what do you think of this build? I actually already own the Videocard, RAM and SSD so critique on the other aspects would be appreciated.

Normally I'd say to get faster XMP ram (3000+ mhz), but that's not an option anymore. So go for it, looks like a well balanced build. Enjoy

What's a good 1080p 144hz monitor? I know that one ASUS model that ends in QE is supposed to be good but I heard the colors are washed out?...Recommendations?

Yeah I just picked it up because I got a really good deal, perhaps I'll upgrade when I get a chance. Thanks for the suggestion!

I installed a new CPU cooler and two additional case fans. Are 65° max temp for the CPU during gaming (Overwatch) and 70° for the GPU (GTX 1070) okay?

Another question when my PC is hooked to my 4K 55" tv it is recommended to use the scaling option in Windows at 300% I believe which works well as I can actually read things on screen lol but are there any in game settings I should mess with when scaling Windows UI? Seems there is a performance hit as my gpu runs hotter?

I recommend that you read a bit on the air flow of your case and see what the users of this particular case recommend (on reddit and YT). I've read this detailed set up for my case (NZXT H440) and it was illuminating and got me to better understand how to best utilize the fans for it. It's worth a read even if you don't have the case.

The thing is I've looked all over Google and haven't found much information on a decent setup for my case in regards to optimal fan placement.

What I did was simply take the stock preset and just replace all of the stock fans.

The case is a Rosewill Blackhawk Midtower, which the design in itself is basically a OEM clone of the Cooler Master 690 II

The stock config was like this.

Two front 120mm intake (with room for a 3rd 120mm intake if you don't use a optical drive)
One 140mm Top exhaust (and empty spot next to it for an additional 140mm)
One 140mm Side intake.
One 120mm rear exhaust.

The case has 177mm clearance for CPU Heatsink cooler. The Noctua NH-U14S has height of 165mm so I'll probably need to remove the side panel fan.

What I plan to do is have 2x120mm front intake, 2x140mm top exhaust, and 1x120mm rear exhaust.

There is also room for a bottom 120 or 140mm mounted fan with lower drive cage removed. however since this would be placed next to the PSU this might not be optimal.

One benefit is the nice cutout at the bottom of the motherboard tray to accommodate installation of a CPU heatsink without needing to completely remove the motherboard.

There is also a fan spot on the right panel directly under the motherboard, Although I don't know how useful a fan in that spot would be especially since that would be sharing the same space where the cables are managed. I suppose an exhaust for any heat trapped under the motherboard produced by the CPU possibly?

I plan to replace all 5 fans with my next refresh soon. So I'll need to buy four 120mms and two 140mms since I plan to add the extra 140mm for an additional top exhaust.
