I'm looking to upgrade my GPU to one of the new generation cards, although I could go for a previous generation card if you can convince me :p
My budget for this is about 350€.

My current GPU is a GTX 670.
My monitor resolution is 1920x1080.

Should I be going for a GTX 1060 or a RX480?
What manufacturer's versions of those cards would you guys recommend?

The thing is I've looked all over Google and haven't found much information on a decent setup for my case in regards to optimal fan placement.

What I did was simply take the stock preset and just replace all of the stock fans.

The case is a Rosewill Blackhawk Midtower, which the design in itself is basically a OEM clone of the Cooler Master 690 II

The stock config was like this.

Two front 120mm intake (with room for a 3rd 120mm intake if you don't use a optical drive)
One 140mm Top exhaust (and empty spot next to it for an additional 140mm)
One 140mm Side intake.
One 120mm rear exhaust.

What I plan to do is have 2x120mm front intake, 2x140mm top exhaust, and 1x120mm rear exhaust.

Your plan is less than ideal. To prevent dust build-up you want slight positive pressure, meaning more intake flow than exhaust. This way, all your intake is passing through filters. With a setup like the one you have planned, your case will be sucking in air through any seam or hole it can find. You'll be spending more on fans than you need to, won't be seeing any thermal benefit, and the inside of the case will be getting much dirtier much faster.

Two 120mm intakes and a single 120mm rear exhaust will be more than enough cooling.

Thanks Gaf. Before and after and not a single issue on my first build with no help and done from memory off watching on youtube. Very excited. Just waiting on to plug in my gpu.

How was it working with that case? Any problems or thongs you didn't like?

I oped for the R5.

I know this thread isnt for this, but I dont know were else to ask.

I recently bough a GTX1060 and it runs everything extremely well. My only problem is that in the 4 days of use, my pc couldnt turn on at least 2 times (the screen goes black when loading windows, after the windows 10 logo appears). This didn't happen before, so I'm wondering if I should sent the card to warranty inmediatly or if I should wait and see if the problem persist (Last year my power supply was defective and the same store replaced it without problems). Since it may be software related (it failed when windows should be finally loaded)

Well, right now your only real Option for AMD is the RX 480. The Fury is over $300 and no one knows when, if, or even what the 490 will be.

Looks like you'll get very marginally better performance but without the Crossfire issues... in GTA V at least...
Thanks! That's what I feared, was the same deal last year lol. The only game that persuades me to drop the second card is Paragon. It (UE4) doesn't seem to support SLI/CF. So it doesn't run as well as I'd like. I'll hold on for now.

You need to troubleshoot to see if it's actually the gpu the problem. Does your processor have integrated graphics? If so, have you tried disconnecting the gpu and connecting the display to the motherboard instead? If you get to the splash screen I doubt it's a gpu issue.

I mean the PC does work most of the time, as I say it only failed twice, but this never happened before I installed the new GPU. And I was kind of worried, I guess I'll check for software issues first.

No issues. Wish the rear fan was 140mm but that's a small detail. Love all the
small wire tie ins on the back side of the case. Easy to work with for my first case. I want to try a mini itx build now.

You're the second person that had black screen issues with a 1000 series GTX card, I've seen in this thread.

You might want to read this thread and make sure your issues aren't driver specific. Apparently the latest GeForce drivers are bugged and are having specific issues with GTX 1000 series cards.

So...I have a question. My computer is like 7 years old at this point.

Do I actually have to update everything about it to run the games I want?

Like, I want to get a new case (this one lacks HDMI cables. How did I get a case without those in 2009?), maybe a new fan, and obviously a new GPU.

Do I need to get a new processor, motherboard, and power supply as well?

for the record, this is what I have right now

Sup guys so I just bought a stock 480 pretty cheap, well cheap for mexican gpu standards, anyway, after installing my pc just wont turn on :( I have an old gtx 560 that runs without problems on my pc, just wonder what can I do...

Should I return it? Or could it be my motherboard??? The motherboard is pretty old so I think Sincé The gpu draws power from it maybe thats the problema..

Any ideas??? Thx in advance!

I would say start from scratch. A new GPU would be bottlenecked. Sounds like you would be taking everything apart anyway since you want a new case.

Your PC won't turn on at all? Or there's nothing displaying on the screen?

Edit... I know this is going to sound dumb... but did you turn the switch on the back of your PSU back on? I've given myself a mini-heart attack with that one, lol.
Usually when I'm having a few drinks while doing a rebuild.

Are windows keys/activations tied to the hardware they were initially installed to? If for example, I wipe out my surface pro and install Ubuntu on it, and later decide to reinstall Windows 10, is it as simple as getting a windows 10 usb bootable installer and running it?

It does turn on, The power les plus The gpu and cpu fan but it does not display anything... I Guess ill return The card Tomorrow unless I can get someone to try The gpu on its cpu to know if it is dead or not.

Do Deus EX Mankind Divided has made me re-think how soon I want to upgrade my CPU. planning on going from an AMD X2 Phenom 955 to an intel i5 6500. The whole upgrade will cost em north of $400 CAD... is it a good time to upgrade, or should I wait for this Zen thing? As someone who exclusively used AMD stuff until last year, they have never failed to disappoint me but I am not sure now.

EDIT: Also, how do I get Windows 10 again as I am also upgrading my motherboard? I remember a friend have me his key for windows 7, would that work and how I could I find out what the key is? (Or maybe one of yeh kind souls could let me borrow one ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°))

Does it seem like it's actually booting but just not displaying anything, or just getting power but not booting?

If you have an integrated GPU it might be defaulting to that since you swapped GPUs. So you might try plugging your monitor into that and seeing if it works, then you can change the settings in the bios.

Nop it does not display neither, when The gpu is plugged it does not display nor boot, just all The fans get on but as soon I click The power button again it just turn off instantly.

Hmm... did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers before you added the AMD GPU? Not sure if that would cause it or not, though...

Could just be a bad card.

How many ports does your card have? Did you try a different one?

One of the DVI ports on my old 7970 never worked... I switched to HDMI and never looked back.

The thing is that the pc doesnt even boot, if I keep the gpu unplugged and doesnt plug the monitor to the integrated gpu the pc does boot,i know because it takes more time to turn off that way.

But if I plug the gpu the pc does not boot at all, if I turn it off it turns off instantly.

Huh... if you were running a 560 before, there shouldn't be a power issue... Is the GPU seated completely in the slot?

I came to same conclusion earlier, but I read that the 480 draws power from the mobo so maybe thats the problem?

And yea it is fully seated, altough theres like 1/3 of an inch gap where the outer metal rests om the case(sorry I cant explain it better) that does not exist when i place thr 560, but the 480 cant go any more deep.

480 draws power from both the motherboard and the six pin connector. The reference 460 is the one that is motherboard only.

also, can you post a photo of what you're talking about? Also, Mexico? What time is it there?

Why is the Asus PG279Q impossible to find new in-stock reasonably priced? Amazon Warehouse has "very good" units for $608, so maybe that'd be worth a try.

Newegg has the MG279Q for just under $550 but the PG279Q is $1,688...

I just bought an RX 480 and ordered the Freesync version for my wife. Buying Vega when it comes out may still be cheaper than buying the G-Sync version right now.

Quick and dirty question. Excuse the ignorance, but I tried and couldn't find an answer in the thread.

I hate Windows 10 (installed on laptop). Looking to build a pc or grab another laptop.
Is it a problem to downgrade to Windows 7 if I wanted to play recently released games? Like, do some games have a "WINDOWS 10 REQUIREMENT". I haven't game'd on the pc since the early 2000's... Little out of touch.

Addition to my earlier post: I installed an intake chassis fan on the bottom of the case and now I'm a little bit afraid of dust and other stuff from the floor getting sucked in. Should I remove it or is there nothing to worry about?

You're missing out on dx12 only games because of this.

so far:
Forza 6 Apex
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
Gears of War 4 (maybe)
Quantum Break (will get a dx11 steam release soon)
and more future Microsoft exclusives like future halo games, crackdown 3, forza horizon 3 etc. (most probably)

The rest depends on your future gpu. Currently nvidia gpus do not profit from dx12 (in most cases) while their amd counterparts see a nice boost (again... most of the time). Is it a big deal though? Dx11 and dx12 look identical in games and nvidias dx11 performance is still very good, even compared to amds dx12 performance.
IMO: If you want to use an amd gpu, you should rethink your no win10 (no dx12) mindset, but if you're planing to get a nvidia gpu then you can ignore win10 as long as there is no dx12 exclusive game you're interested in.

I have a 6700K and a Gigabyte H170M-D3H motherboard.
Tried to overclock it in the BIOS but it doesn't work.
It won't let me adjust the clock ratio beyond 40, it just snaps back to default.

is my CPU screwed?

Don´t you need a Z170 instead of H170 to overclock?

Guys, anyone here knows anything about upcoming cases with USB-C already (or at least MiniITX motherboards)? I´m hoping to see some when Z210 comes but...

You don't need to buy ram from a QVL. Buy whatever you like.

I'm pretty sure an H170 motherboard is not for overclocking. You need a Z170.

Processor is still fine but you're definitely on the lower end of the GPU market. What's your budget?

Motherboard could be interesting because you definitely have a lot of overclocking headroom on that CPU.

Download something like AIDA64 or HWINFO and post the screenshots here so we can see your whole rig (especially the MBO).
Your CPU and RAM are fine, but you need a better GPU. We'll know more once we see what motherboard you have.
Also, open the case and let us know what power supply you have.
