Thinking about taking the plunge and building my first PC. Pretty much exclusively for gaming. Followed Haz's build sheet for Excellent - Best Overall. The new AMD cards are what what got me thinking about it since I don't want to spend hundreds more for a 1070. Just looking to play current gen games with better performance than consoles + general use. Don't want to spend more than $1000. Since the card isn't out for another week I'd like to have the other parts down so I can build it when it's released.

I have a 480 GB Sandisk Ultra II SSD I got on sale a few months ago that I've been using as external storage that I can use if it'll work and use a USB DVD drive.

Any advice? I'm not certain what memory or if 3000 makes much of a difference over 2400. Would I be fine with the 550W power supply? Recommend a 7200 2 TB HDD over a 1 TB 5400? I don't really care what the case looks like as long as it's built well. I need to have optical audio out but the motherboard Haz lists has one. Any suggesting on changing motherboards to fit a smaller case but would need a soundcard with optical out are welcome, just as long as it's not sacrificing quality/features. Not 100% certain that the motherboard I picked supports DDR4 3000 either even though they say it's compatible.

Got this one put together today

Found out that the Asus Strix 970 I was planning on putting in it (once I got my 1080 for my main computer) doesn't fit in it since it's too tall :c

The heatpipe sticks out just a bit, apparently you can cut the plexiglass with the back of an xacto knife but I don't realllly want to do that but it's probably better than buying a new gpu..

Love this case though, looks so nice and it's so so so easy to work with

I also have an Air 240. Its a great case.

You can also move the window from being mounted from the inside to the outside, and it will give enough space. Granted, you'll need to find another way to keep the window in place, but wedging something between the frame and the window will do.

Just ordered all my parts except my OS. Is Amazon pretty much the best place to get my key? There is a swap thing on Reddit that is way cheaper, but it looks kinda shady. Any advice? Do I just have to suck it up and drop $100 on Windows?

My advice is use the Microsoft swap on reddit. I have had to use it three times for builds, worked fine every time, there is not windows support but you shouldn't really need it ever.

Cheaper to buy a new key from reddit when you change cpu/mobo then it is to buy a copy from retailers.

Bought a key off reddit and have been using it close to a year now. Not losing much at $25 imo.

SO I am going to order the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo for my 2600 i7 can slight overclock the nonk version but don't have anything but stock cooler (still works good but not good enough for any OC).

Most videos I watch they just wipe the cpu clean with rubbing alcohol and put a little thermal paste down, do any of you recommend tinning the cpu/heatsink? I know in the past I read a lot of stuff on tinning and putting it on both products and then wiping it off clean without alcohol so that it fills any micro gaps etc for more efficient contact.

Needed or not necessary?

I just wiped my CPU with high purity alcohol, allowed it to dry, and applied a pea sized amount of thermal paste. All has been fine for over a year now.

Watch some youtube videos on how to install the 212 Evo. If you are prepared its easy, if not its a pain.

Not at all necessary. And buy a better cooler. It's time to stop recommending that thing.

I'm looking for a graphics card that won't murder my budget, and will give me a completely solid framerate with decent graphics. My current plan is to get a GeForce 960 for about $200, but the 970 is more like $300, and to my understanding, the 1070 will get to about $350 when the non-founders edition comes out.

I'm only looking for a card that'll last me the next 3-5 years, until I can afford something better. Advice?

Wait for the 1060 or get a 1070.

The 480 comes out soon as well. It should provide around 980 performance for $200. That's what I'm waiting for at the moment.

It was the highest rated cooler on Newegg for that price range. 30$. The Noctua was like 75$ and I don't want to spend that much on this computer, will probably replace it in a year or two.

Watched a few already. Think the biggest time consumer is going to be taking everything apart to get to the back of the motherboard, but i'll be able to clean everything really well.

Whatever you do, do not buy a 960. Wait a week for the rx 480 or at least reviews on it's performance. 970 prices are dropping quickly also. Seen some in 240 range.

3000mhz is the sweet spot for price v performance, benchmarks show a drastic improvement and it's what I recommend. You just have to change the memory speed in the XMP profile in the BIOS. Super easy, took me less than 5 mins. I changed the mobo to the Gigabyte, which has more than enough slots for what you want to do (and optical out), still an ATX board, costs $50 less. Increased the PSU to 650w.

I would use your SSD as the OS and games drive and the 1tb 7200 as the storage/backup.

How do you go about overclocking the non-k version? There is a "Performance" option in the ASUS bios on the p8p67 that bumps it up something like 140mhz, is there another method?

Your motherboard has to allow changing the baseclock in the bios.

You may have to download a bios that allows it, if they have even have one. I know asrock boards allow it, not sure about asus.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not totally clear on the issues with the 960, but whatever. From the sound of it, the rx 480 fits my needs the best (What with my minimum wage job, and all) , but it raises a dumb question that I have: I've heard that there's issues with AMD cards not working on some games as well as Nvidia, because drivers, or something. Is that still a thing, or is it some relic of the past that just never left my brain?

An extra 80/90 for the cpu then gotta add the mobo and ram so won't be cheap but might wait the extra month or two and go down the 6700k route.

Or do we reckon x99 and 5820k?

Choices haha.

5820k would also do. If you have a need for many cores (such as encoding) then X99 for sure. If not, bit of a toss-up. Here in Canada I saved a good bit by going for Skylake, but I only use this machine for gaming (so it was an easy decision).

Currently debating picking up a used 970 for 180. I know its a bad time to buy a mid range gpu with the new rx's coming out next week. But, the leaked benchmarks have the 970 just below the 200 dollar 480. So should I pick one up or should I stay strong and wait till next week? I have no card right now, just running on integrated gpu.

Just ordered 16 GB of 2133 MHz RAM to go along with the GTX 1070 G1 that I have on the way.

I'm on a fairly strict budget lately but this was my big blowout for a while. I'm hoping to get ~3 years out of these things. Jesus though it's crazy to think that by that point my 2500k will have lasted EIGHT years. What a fucking champion.

Yeah I originally said 4 months, don't know where my head was at. You're correct, 6 months, could be at CES! Either way, I got a 6600k and will probably jump on a 8 core Cannonlake when they drop (if it's an option).

My x99 pro carbon and 6800k were supposed to be delivered today but alas fedex decided to fuck me. Tracking updated and it now says pending and has been sitting in Ohio for the past couple of days with no delivery date estimate, I feel like they probably lost it.

I was planning on waiting for the 480, but my boss just got a 1080 (my store has two of them in stock and he nabbed one) and offered to sell me his 970 for $100. I think it's the better deal here, even though 8GB VRAM is inticing. Anything is an upgrade from my 560Ti though

I've noticed that my CPU (i5 3570k) is running a bit hot. 60c on average when I'm just watching streams. I'm going to reapply thermal paste, but does anyone have a recommendation for a good budget cooler?

im at 1.296V @ 4.6ghz on my i5-6600K and good temps

BUT it only goes to 4.6 when im doing something extensive. is that okay?

if i can put it up to 4.8 with a lil higher Vcore. do you recommend it?

Hey I'm doing a 6700k build right now and I was going to go with those exact sticks. I went with the same manufacturer but the 4 series and they are mighty sexy in red. I got about half the build done before calling it a night. But now I can't sleep because it calls to me.

Hold up, you're spending just north of $3k on your first PC build ever? I mean, more power to you but, what exactly are you looking to do with this build? JUST gaming, or other applications like video or music editing? Are you planning on overclocking? Because a lot of what you have picked is redundant or WAY overkill if you haven't done this before. We can build you something for much less that's just as good or better.

Try this. WAY faster SSD, better HDD, better mobo, cheaper cooler, case, and removed the extras. Get a couple 120mm fans to go in there too.
