I ordered an XFX rx 480 but my 144hz monitor, BenQ XL2411z, has no DisplayPort only HDMI, DVI-DL, and VGA. Sadly, I realized this after it wasn't possible to cancel anymore.

How would I connect my monitor to the 480 while still maintaining 144hz at 1920x1080 resolution? Is this even possible?

I've found this adapter but am not sure it will work: http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042801&p_id=4827&seq=1&format=2

I'm pretty sure HDMI 2.0 supports 1080p/144hz, so just go HDMI. Unless the monitor itself doesn't support it for some reason.

If I'm correct the i5 6500 doesnt come with a stock cooler so go with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. I would drop the RAM to 8gb at 3000mhz, you'll see more FPS gains from faster memory than more memory.

We were talking about this. The problem here is the motherboard. It doesn't support faster ram or xmp. I'd love to get a better one but we already had a long talk resulting in a money limit raise by 100€ to get an i5 over an i3. There is no room left to get a fancy MB for him.

Waiting to see if there's a GTX 1060 soon enough, or I'll add in the GTX 970 since it's hitting $250 AR... Or not have it if custom AIB 470's and 480's come out fast enough.
Guys I'm trying to get out the max of this rig.
Is this score ok? I was looking through the FM search and a lot of results have worse overclocks but a lot better results.

And this is the 3dMark 11

A lot of people have an i7 instead or higher clocks, don't sweat it.

i5-6500 comes with a heatsink, only the 'K' CPUs don't.
Bah I got a problem. Bought a Corsair Carbide 100R case to fit in my old M4A77TD and GTX 460 at my sister's place, and frustratingly, the gfx card won't fit. Removing the standoff screws and trying to install the card while adjusting the mobo doesn't work either. Damn thing just won't align properly. Garhshsjajsjaka
Dremel!
I'm about ready to finally upgrade my PC after researching the past couple months and waiting for benchmarks of the new 480x.

My system is currently:

i7 920
6GB of memory
Gtx 285

Yes, these are pretty old. I built this system in 2009.

I am planning to get:

12gb of memory
AMD 480x 8gb version

How is my i7 920? Does it still hold up in modern games? Will it be a massive bottleneck with my new GPU and memory upgrade?

I game on a 1080p monitor.
It's a bit long in the tooth at this point, I'd look at upgrading CPU/mobo soon after. If you wait a bit the RX 470 / RX 480 custom AIB / GTX 1060 should be out as well.
Just said 'fuck it' and bought it. Haven't dropped that much money on one thing in a long time! Scary!
Good stuff.
So I am sorting out an upgrade (i7 6700k, probably a 480) and I am really stuck on cases and by proxy, motherboards. I will be going with water cooling, likely the Corsair H100i v2 unless someone offers a better solution, because I want to overclock.

I want to ask, are there any miniATX cases that would be ok for both the 480 (in terms of size) and the ability to overclock? A quiet case would also be nice. I have been eyeing the Corsair 400Q, which is a mid sized case for a while, but then realized that it may be possible for me to go a bit smaller. The fact that I cannot have an internal bluray drive bugs me a little too.

I would have 1 SSD and 2 regular HDs shoved in there as well. Either way, there are so many damn cases to choose from. I want something quiet, good cooling, and no need for a window. I don't mind spending ~100-150 at this point.

I have only used Gigabyte boards in the past and feel like changing it up primarily for the BIOS. I have been leaning toward the ASUS z170 PRO, but would of course be fine switching that for a mini board if it would work well.

I do not plan on buying until the prices come down again. I should have pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago when everything was a bit lower in cost. At least this gives me more time to ponder cases and motherboards!
You really really don't need water to overclock. At all. The gains are minimal and you trade it for pump noise. IMO everyone should be going air unless it's for aesthetic reasons. (I say this as I went from air to 280mm AIO currently, 0.1Ghz woohoo)
If a 240 or 280mm rad is limiting your options there are 120 and 140mm rads, or just go air.

You are severely limiting that RX480's performance with that CPU. Some people will tell you it is fine with older games but then you wouldn't need that GPU at all. Go i3 or basic non k i5. There's no other way unless you want to wait for Zen.

If you're going to be playing games, which seems to be the case given the RX 480, I'd stretch your budget a bit further and go for an i5 6600K build, even it means delaying things by a few weeks. Even a stock 2500K is faster than the 6300.

If you really want to go all AMD, at least get the 8300, which has more cores and is often strangely easier to OC to 4.4GHz or so.

OK, so I have two options I can take advice on which are:

Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail
Gigabyte 990X-Gaming SLI AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

compared to

Gigabyte Z170-Gaming K3 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6400 2.70GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail

Both using the DDR3 memory? Price difference doesn't seem that much at first glance.

nvm: Looks like it was answered below :)

Is there much between the higher end i3 and mid range i5?

A modern i3 like the 6100 will do a decent job (better than a 2500k most of the time) but I would get an i5 regardless.

Something like this basic config:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor (£170.99 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: Asus H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£49.98 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (£51.92 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Sandisk Ultra II 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£56.98 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB Black Edition Video Card
Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£54.48 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £384.35
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I went for the least expensive choices to keep the budget down but it's still a lot better than a FX6300 build.
If you can spend a bit more and want to overclock, an i5 6600K + Z170 board would be more future proof.

Yes. A battery backup should fix you problem. Since you are experiencing power fluctuations, I would definitely recommend you get one or more and put your expensive electronics, like your PC, plugged behind it.
I researched some more and came to the same conclusion, but thank you just the same. Gonna order one today.

Im putting together a potential new rig, as its been a few years and im looking to have a damn good machine.
Looking at the i5-6600k, with new MB, RAM etc.

At the moment, i have a 3GB 7970, and im looking to buy a 1440p monitor.
What would be a good upgrade (if you think one is needed) that isnt a 1080?

Cheers.

currently have an r9 290 reference. How long will this card last? lol i only ask because I'm thinking of dropping ~$100 to water cool it cuz the noise is starting to bug me! I currently play sc2/bf4/siege. Will be getting BF1 when it comes out...should i drop the money for the cooler or will it be replaced soon?

side note, was thinking about getting the 480 but it's not too big of a leap from the 290

The i5 is the better choice here but I would imagine the costs are not even comparable? The FX 8350 should require a much smaller budget and can easily hit 4.4GHz or thereabouts, therefore it wouldn't bottleneck the RX 480 too much. But if you want to future proof yourself the i5 might be a better idea.

Yeah one of the prices didn't pull through which made me think I was getting a deal. However, due to GAF advice, I have swapped out for the i5 6600 and the Z170......looking forward to getting back into the PC gaming scene now :) Put about an extra £125 on the price

This should do me for four years I think. What are peoples opinions of the i5 in general in sim based games like Civ v and total war? Googling supports mixed results.....As ,ong as it's smooth at 1080 and CPU doesn't spaz out I'll be happy.....

My sister is trying to play The Division on her ~3 year old PC, but its running like crap. She has a Radeon HD8670D and the CPU is an AMD A10 (i dont remember the exact model). I checked that the GPU is like 0.65TFLOPS. A friend of mine got a GPU from work for free, also some Radeon card, i cant remember the model, but when i checked the specs, it was around 1.5TFLOPS.

So my question is, will it be enough to upgrade the GPU to play The Division fine, even at the lower settings? Or is the CPU too slow?

I can play Civ V fairly comfortably on a heavily OC'ed FX chip so the i5 should destroy the game no problems.

Well, which A10 APU is it? Something like an A10-7870K could theoretically play that game on 720p mid-low settings without even a discrete card. The game should handle very comfortably with a decent GPU methinks.

However, since you say the computer has a 8670D GPU, I guess it's an A10-6800K?

Did a proper sound test on my PC this morning since it was bugging me that a Tier 1 PSU would have the exact same issue as a Tier 3 PSU. Took both panels off and booted it up. Clinking noise I was hearing was actually coming from around the CPU. Can hear it more prominant from the back of the PC. Not there all the time just during loading times and things like opening programs so I think it's just the CPU working under load? Or the cooler maybe. My old desktop from years ago used to make noises when booting up like that.

Then I loaded up Metro LL. That is a power heavy game so then the "buzzing" noise started. I thought it was coming from my PSU, but it actually sounds like its coming from the side of my GPU when the fans are on fully. It stops once I exit the game. Loaded up Enslaved which doesn't make the fans spin and no noise from it.

So maybe I was just being really hyperbolic :D Oh well I got a much better PSU out of the whole ordeal.

I also wanted to connect a 2nd 1920x1200 60hz monitor at the same time, which I'm planning to connect to the 480's HDMI port.

You're going to either need to get an Active Dual Link DVI to DP adapter, which will run you about $100 or return the card and wait for an AIB that puts a DVI-D port on a 480.

Or you return the monitor and pick up something with Freesync? Couple options.

Will an i7 3770 bottleneck an evga gtx 1080 ftw?

Any help appreciated.

With an factory overclocked 1080 nearly every CPU will be the bottleneck... especially at resolutions around 1080 and 1440p.
But the i7 3770 holds up pretty well in contrast to his i5 brother. Especially when overclocked and paired with fast ddr3 ram.
Of course you'll get a descent boost in perfromance (10-20fps) if you choose to switch to an i7 6700 in some games like GTA V, Witcher 3 or Just Cause 3 but if you want to hold out you can do it without loosing too much atm.
I'm seriously surprised how much better i7s stand the test of time than i5s.

If I remember correctly even an i3 4160 was able to beat the A10 7860 'CPU' in most cases so it's definitely not a powerhouse CPU but the division seems to run well on most CPUs if you are fine with 30fps when paired with a mid range GPU.

Definitely :)

i5-6500 comes with a heatsink, only the 'K' CPUs don't.

Yeah thanks for confirming, I was a bit confused for a sec.

Well bummer. Stick with what you have then.

Actually we postponed everything, till good (and hopefully cheap) custom models arrive. In the end we'll end up goping back to just 8gb of ram to make up for the price difference, I guess. The stock 480 PCI-E power consumption problem isn't very encouraging for a 'cheap' motherboard build.

Hi! We have the same mouse!

We also have nearly the same requirements for an upgrade. I have both good and bad news: there is a mouse that's pretty much perfect - but it isn't wireless.

https://www.amazon.com/Zowie-Gear-Gaming-Mouse-FK1/dp/B00LHRTO5W

It's big, has only two thumb buttons, and uses a nice sensor. I hope the wireless part is not a dealbreaker. Though, really, no wireless mouse will ever be good for first-person shooters.

If you paid money for Windows 10 you should have been given a key. The disc is worth nothing. If the seller can't help you, you can still get a free license (for the next month or so) if you upgrade off of an existing Windows install.

Just make sure you do the upgrade on your target hardware. Your machine info will get sent to Microsoft and it will be associated with your Win 10 license. This method does not get you a "key" though. Just click "Skip" if it asks you for one and the activation will happen automatically.

You could sell your 290, combine that with the money you'd spend on watercooling, and have ~$265 to spend on a new card. That would either completely cover a custom-cooled, near-silent 8GB 480, or get you within firing distance of a 1070 (lowest price I've seen for one of those is $409).

Where would I have gotten the key? I just bought Windows off of newegg bundled with my CPU, but I didn't get notified of any sort of product key.

Thanks. What if I use W8 right now (laptop) but want W10 (on another system)?

I think you'll have to buy a key but you can always make the Windows 10 installer without the key. I don't think the free upgrade works across computers. You might be able to upgrade your laptop to Windows 10 then transfer the license but if you still want to use your laptop then you'll have to buy a Windows 10 license. All you're really doing is buying a key, the install files are all available for downloading anytime.

All you do is download the tool, plug in your USB, then tell it you want a clean installation for another PC, choose your edition and whatnot, the boom you can boot to the USB on your new computer and install Windows 10. Alternatively you could buy a copy of Windows 7/8/8.1 and do the free upgrade.

Bought some DDR 2400 ram. If I'm to understand before I plug this in I should go into my bios to find where I need to adjust speeds? When I plug these in they'll default to 1600 unless I OC them in the bios?

I have to figure this out too. I have 3000 MHz RAM running at 2133 right now but one of the XMP profiles didn't let my PC boot so now I have to actually figure it out. Ugh.

Here's mine, not as tidy as I wish, there's still too many cables involved.

The NZXT Manta case is new, as is the 1070 and also got a second SSD.

How does the Windows re-install work if I decide to upgrade my mobo, CPU and RAM? I did the free upgrade to Win10 back a couple months ago.

Are you sure it wasn't included in the shipping confirmation e-mail or otherwise e-mailed to you?

Nope. Just called Newegg and the girl on the line said it should be printed on the sleeve the disc came in, so I suppose I'll find out when I go to install it. There's a bunch of long strings on characters in various spots on it, so one of them ought to be the key.

Why didnt you mount your radiator at the top? The tubing is in the way of the RAM in case you need to replace/change them.

Had it on top first and two additional fans in the front, but then decided to install it in the front.

Now there's two fans on the radiator as intake, and the GPU and rear fan which get the air out.

Changing the ram would still be possible, it's not as tight as it looks on the pic. And I don't plan to change anything in the comming months, maybe next year.

I think I will go with ATX again next time, don't know why, I actually like big cases with lots of space.

I think my PC is going crazy.

I tried doing some very basic overclocking (going from stock 3.3Ghz to 4.0Ghz), I did that and things seemed alright - until today.

I've had nothing but hard crashes in games, BSOD entries and a not so fun day with the machine. So I decided to run Prime95 and got a bunch of errors and stuff.

Which made me go into the BIOS for the motherboard and factory reset everything in hopes of getting a stable machine. Then I ran Prime95 again and then I get this:

The first time I did that it quickly followed with a BSOD, I didn't get to see the error message before Windows rebooted, but the word "Critical" was there.

Second time it just gives me the above errors.

Does anyone have any help to offer, or advice on how to deal with this? I just want a simple and easy experience with the PC, and don't want to do anything crazy. Just boot Steam and play games, but thatdoesn't seem to happen at the moment.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155)

Windows 10 apparently has an activate by phone option, just like previous versions of Windows, where you are given a special code should you migrate to new hardware. From what I recall in past years, the person on the phone just wants verbal confirmation you uninstalled the OS from your previous build?

I have not actually tried this on Win 10, but will be giving it a go in about a week. If that doesn't work, I will re-install Win 7 and see if it is possible to get another free upgrade license off the same key (I suspect it is not).

Are you experiencing higher temps than you normally have?

Also, how old are your parts? You might have damaged them over time. That shit happens, especially if you were adding more voltage.
