If I want to achieve a 3.7 GHz overclock on my new and not yet built PC which will have a Ryzen 1700, will the Wraith Spire cooler be OK? What voltage should I start at when stress testing?

I'm using the wraith spire with my 1700 and I have 3.9 ghz @ 1.325 volts. Just go for around 1.3V for 3.7 GHz. You're pretty much guaranteed to be able to get 3.7 ghz out of it.

Soldering a die so small leads to chances of cracking the die.

You say that, but from all reports AMD is having ridiculously good yields for Ryzen and they solder them.

Thanks! What temperature, roughly speaking, should I expect with that at normal load and max load? I have no idea anymore what ballpark range is acceptable for CPUs.

I get about 40-70C(absolute max it gets to) at 3.9. Amd says you're fine if you're under 95, but I'm not fond of pushing that envelope(Not that I've ever seen my 1700 get anywhere near it).

PC gurus of GAF! Can I get your opinion on this second-hand set-up that's being sold locally by somebody for £1,000 (or best offer)?
Does it represent value for money? What would be a good price?
How capable would it be for sim racing and FPSes at 1080p/60?
Any obvious weak or odd areas? Limitations for upgrading? Suitable cooling?
Anything other advice you can add?
I think it was a pre-built.
Many thanks.

Awesome, thanks again for your help. Gonna put together some of my build today and spend the next few days making sure everything on my old PC is backed up before swapping in the HDDs etc. Looking forward to some OCing fun.

Went to turn my PC on and heard a noise and it won't power on. I'm hoping it's just the power supply. Is there a good way to test before I buy another power supply?

Got an old board lying around you can swap out yours with? Otherwise break out the voltmeter.

Also, it won't even start powering on? Just no response, right?

My buddy followed my advice and upgraded his 2500K/GTX 590 to a 1060 6 gig. He installed it, and everything worked great for a short time, then it shut off. Turns out his CPU is pegged at 100% load constantly, and keeps shutting itself down.

The new card only uses about a third the power of the old one, and if he runs it without a card, or with the old one, it does the same thing, so I don't believe the PSU could be the problem.

He's checked the task manager, and no one process really stands out as the culprit. He's in the process of uninstalling all drivers, but apparently that is a slow process because of heat issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone experienced anything like this?

I have a question. I am currently using i7 7700k withmsi 270z M35. Will the new i7 8 series ?

If the cpu is 30 percent faster and use the same motherboard socket then I am in. Otherwise pass

As usual, check your motherboard CPU compatibility on the vendor site. If you are lucky you might be able to use it with a bios update if it's physically compatible.

Yeah no power nothing. I'm hoping it's just the psu but worried it's the motherboard

Check if the power supply is under warranty first. Some of them have pretty long warranties. Motherboards are really hard to breakdown, and even if it had a problem you'd likely at least see a warning light or an attempt to boot. Granted, a power supply can take a board with it.

Bought my computer guys. Ended up getting a ryzen 1700. Gonna continue to use my 970 until black friday / the mining craze ends / new nvidia cards release date is announced. I'll post a pic when my build is done.

Got a feeling my iMac is dying, it's given me 7 great years but it needs replacing. At a cross road now between getting a new iMac or going back to Windows (I've kinda missed it). I do most of my work on my MB and a iMac might be redundant.

Is this a good time to upgrade or wait (if there is something new coming). Read that a lot of the components are being overpriced right now.

Rebuilding the PC for the first time in years from my current 2500K

CPU: i7 7700K
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z270G
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2 x 8GB 3200
SSD: Samsung 960 Evo M2 500GB
PSU: Corsair RM650x
Cooler: Cryorig H7

Will be re-using my GTX970 for now. I assume the Cryorig-cooler is enough for overclocking up to around 4.6GHz?

As an addition to the previous post, has anyone here ever overclocked with the Cryorig H7 on Ryzen 7? How have your temps been?

My temps have been 40-70c on the stock cooler that comes with the 1700 @ 3.9 ghz. With an aftermarket you have nothing to worry about on that front.

Intel launched a new high end platform so the new mobos are currently as expensive as they are going to get. RAM keeps getting more expensive every week, and various Graphics Cards prices are really high because of cryptocurrency miners.

But the prices of Ryzen, and Skylake are fine. I would say it is only a bad time if you are aiming for the highest end, then I would say you should wait for AMD threadripper and the intel i9 chips that are still left. AMD Vega is also coming in the next months, hopefully the miners don't go for them right away.

edit: Seems like some people are already on waiting mode for Coffee lake, that would be replacing Kaby lake as well.

Thank god. I read a few posts online claiming that Ryzen gets too hot for overclocking with the H7, but it was purely assumed, so I nearly panicked, haha. Many thanks for replying!

Maybe they were trying to get past 4 ghz? From what I understand the temps do start going out of control past that point for most Ryzen 7s. Beyond that my 1700 has been remarkably cool. I was going to get an aftermarket but the stock cooler has given me no reason to, it's quiet and does the job.

I've been in the EVGA Step-Up Queue for about 6 weeks now waiting on the 1080Ti Black Edition. Is this a normal queue time?

Hey all, I'm planning on grabbing a budget-friendly GPU for my first PC build and it seems like two of the best "budget" cards on the market right now are the GTX 1050 and AMD R7 370 - any idea if one is "better" than the other? It seems like the benchmark differences aren't very stark.

Unless of course they're both terrible, in which case I wouldn't mind springing for something slightly more expensive.

I'd go with at least a 5/470 or 1050ti for a budget build. They're normally reasonably inexpensive... But, cryptocurrency boom has jacked up their prices.

1050 will definitely be better between those two, but get 1050 Ti instead since there's a 4GB variant of that.
RX 560 4GB is also an alternative.

If you mean now + next year then a 1070 or even a 1060 6. If you want it to run things on high for the next 3-4 years then maybe a 1080. If budget truly isn't a concern then why not a 1080 ti and you'll be set for several years at 1080p.

Thx for the replies.

How does this build look? I have no idea if this is good or bad, so any help would be usefull.
There are certain things I excluded such as the OS etc.

Mother board: MSI A68HM-P33
Processor: i5 6500
Ram: 8GB DDR4
Harddisk: 1TB toshiba hardrive+ 120 GB Kingston SSD
GTX1060 6GB
Cooler: Arctic Alpine 11 plus
Power: Corsair V5

(The graphics card could be swapped out for a 1070 or a 1080 when I finally decide)

Looking to upgrade my 980 (not Ti) to a 1080. My limit is a hard 600, no more. I've had my eyes on several cards on newegg but didn't grab them fast enough and now they're sold out. Anything in particular I should grab? Currently my max res is 1440p with a g-sync monitor.

Currently looking at this

Do it. With very few exceptions they're all good cards.

Im about to go buy a SSD because I need to reformat my computer, is there anything I should know about that? First time im gonna use that and I don't really know what to pick, is there one for PC or laptop?

I know you said your limit is $600 but Massdrop has the Ti variant of the same card. It comes with Destiny 2 which you can sell for at-least $30 in the sales thread. Only downside is it ships in July but for $20(if you sell Destiny 2) extra you can get a Ti.

Edit- Price on Massdrop is $650

SSDs are either SATA (natively laptop compatible, may require an adapter for desktop if your case doesn't support 2.5" drives), PCI or M.2 (so for desktops and your mobo needs to support them).

Also depending on your mobo you *may* need to tweak some bios settings, but newer motherboards (i.e from the past 3-4 years) should be able to deal with an SSD without extra fiddling.

Not sure what Massdrop is, but I actually want the card for destiny 2. I really don't want to go over 575, but I know by the time I add shipping, etc I'll probably be at 600.

If he can hack it, this is easily the best route.

Put the Wraith cooler on my Ryzen 1700 and realized I'd tightened it in a fashion that made it so the fourth screw couldn't be tightened. Had to remove the cooler, go to Microcenter to get thermal paste, come back home to clean off all the thermal paste that had been smudged and would probably bubble if I tried to re-use it, and then apply new thermal paste.

Put too much thermal paste on so that it was seeping over the edges of the CPU when the cooler was tightened. Removed cooler again and cleaned it off. Put smaller pea-size paste on this time and it was much better. Gonna wrap up the build later this week when I swap over my old SSD/HDD and GPU.

Welp, scratch my Massdrop Ti recommendation. It actually sold out as I was about to respond and went to copy the link. Ha, sorry about that.

Imminent release of Asrock Ryzen mini-ITX boards? They popped on NCIX (as backorder).

I hope the prices are placeholders, it's in CND but it's way expensive for a mini-ITX.

I might be mistaken, but it looks like the motherboard you chose is for AMD processors and would not work for the CPU you chose.
The rest seems reasonable enough, although I'd recommend aiming for a 250GB SSD so you won't have to worry so much about space.

Looking to pick up a gtx 1070.

Amazon UK have the Asus turbo and the msi Aero.

Is either one better or is there little difference between brands.

Ps. They are both blower cards as they will be going in a node 202 case.

Looking to get a 1080ti

Is the asus strog worth the 100 bucks more than their turbo gaming edition?

What about the gigabyte aorus? I feel id rather save the 100 bucks and get an extra hard drive or mouse or something

Don't think there is a big reason to go blower type in ITX cases anymore, the TDP is so much lower when people decided that. I run my system heavily overclocked with more TDP in a Node 304, GTX 970 1550/3850mhz, i7 7700k 4.8ghz.

something similar happened to me a few times. use core temp and look for abnormal temperatures. In my case I had to reapply thermal paste to the cpu cooler.

I'm kinda looking for a good gaming laptop. something that can run things like Deus Ex: MD or some of the newer FPS on mid to high detail. something around $1500 or so maybe? any recommendations?

edit: oh, never mind, there is a gaming laptop GAF. I'll go ask there. sorry.
