"I Need a New PC!" 2017 The Ryzing of Kaby Lake and NVMwhee!

You don't get fat stacks in the first place without being frugal, though it's not solely down to price.

The Z390 board range is stated for early next year. Why bother with a Z370 at the point in time when the new boards are literally less than 2 months away.

As for For dropping the 1070 for a 1080Ti, why not make it last until later into next year and scoop up the Volta flagship card for the same price of buying a 1080Ti now?

Price inflation only really effects RAM for that build since coin mining has had largely no effect on 1080/1080Ti prices, but it's still something to consider.

I can see where you're coming from but there's always something better just around the corner. Why buy the flagship Volta card next year, when you can buy the flagship Volta 2 card for the same price just 8 months later or something? I've seen people delaying their builds indefinitely because of this way of thinking.

If you have the money, and you want the top of the line, then go for it, I'd say. Doesn't matter when you step in, there's always something better coming.

Volta is no longer the next card branding for consumer market and it’s call Ampere. The 1080 Ti just released in May so the next x80 Ti probably won’t come out till Fall 2019 if we follow the same release in schedule. Going from a 1070 to 1080 Ti is well worth the jump which I also did recently.

Fair point. I keep thinking the 1080Ti came out last year. Either way, I'd still wait for the Z390 boards.

Has anyone ever come across usb ports randomly turning off and immediately on? For some reason all of my usbs are randomly turning off sometimes when gaming and its getting very fu##### annoying. I really have no idea what to do at this point bar throwing the pos to the trash can.

Ive tried windows automic "fixes" and sometimes it actually finds something and downloads a fix but it wont affect anything. I also did a fresh windows install two times. Could a damaged psu/mobo do this?

I have three usb that go to the mobo. Keyboard, mouse and nzxt's usb hub which houses three internal and two normal usbs.

There is always something just around the corner. The Z390 boards have been accelerated from 2H 2018 to 1H 2018. That could be 2 months away, or it could be 8 months away. We may need it for 8 core CPUs and we may not. Regardless, when it finally releases, we'll be excited about the next thing already.

People waited for Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake.. people waited for Broadwell E, then Skylake X.. all of these were disappointing for one reason or another. 6 core Coffee Lake should feel like a breakthrough for mainstream but instead we're looking forward to 8 core likely on Z390.. it never stops.

Video cards are a bit more predictable, with more certainly tangible results, but likewise as soon as it launches we'll be talking about the inevitable Ti part.

I've started a new build (8700k, 1080ti), and my god, the number of things you need to double check is mind boggling. I don't remember having this much trouble back when I built my current 2500k rig.

I have my case, Cosmos C700P, which looks beautiful, but all the other requirements have me scratching my head for motherboards.

-It needs connectors for 4 USB 3.0's on the front panel
-It needs lots of USB's on the back, for my mouse/keyboard, VR headsets, microphone, Wacom tablet
-It needs enough SATA connectors for my current HDD/SSD's, including the ones I'm using external atm, and another for the bluray r/w
-It need enough PCIe slots for the GPU, capture card and possibly sound card with SLI possible in the future
-I want an M.2 for my boot drive, without it disabling some of my SATA

I've been looking at specs, manuals, pictures of the boards, and making lists of what they do and don't have just to try and decide which one will give me everything I need. Narrowing it down, but damn, didn't think I'd have this much trouble.

I think all Z370s will have 6 SATA connectors max and if the M.2 is also used, that means probably only 5 will be available. I think only higher chipsets like Ryzen or X299 will have more than 6, correct me if I’m wrong.

Well two I've looked at (Taichi and Fatality) have 8 SATA connectors and 3 M.2 connectors, with 2 of the M.2s disabling 2 SATA each, with the third (if I'm reading right) only disabling 1 SATA if its used in SATA mode.

Problem is a lack of USB on the back (only 5 type a). Theres the USB hub option, but I'd rather avoid it if I can get an mb with the ports included.

The high end option I have is MSI godlike, which looks to give all 6 SATA with up to 2 M.2 cards, and plenty of USB on the back, but while I have the money and no rockhard budget I'd still like to spend no more than I have to as long as it does the job. This build is one I intend to keep for another 5-10 years.

Thoughts on a ASUS Strix 570 for as low as $165 (see deal link)?

I'm coming from an AMD 6870 and looking for something relatively powerful but not top of the line and must be reasonable with power use. I'm playing at 1920x1200 60hz and no plans to upgrade monitor anytime soon. I also wonder if it would help with video playback as my CPU is even older (Phenom 550 unlocked) and struggles at 2k or greater on YouTube??

My i5-8600k arrived today and I've been messing around with overclocking for the first time.

5.0ghz topped out at 80 degrees Celsius at regular fan settings and default voltage using Cinebench. So far it's perfectly stable, but I'll drop it back down to 4.8ish if the temps get too wonky.

My cooler is a Hyper 212 Evo, so nothing super fancy. If anybody was doubting an upgrade, I can't recommend it enough. I get about 20 more fps compared to my i7-3770 paired with my 980ti in PUBG. It's a serious upgrade.

Go for those Black Friday deals, guys. This thing is the real deal.

EDIT: Even better from a cold start this morning, without any programs running.

I wonder if bumping it up will cause any features to be foregone like with Z370 this year.

I haven't looked at it recently but it seemed mostly like wifi, audio, usb changes. There's a new TB chip too but I don't know the benefit, maybe just process node. Doesn't seem like stuff I'd really get excited about.. maybe the USB?

Of course some people use wifi, but who cares how it's offered.. anytime I do audio it's USB anymore it seems.

Looking to grab either a new CPU/Mobo OR GPU to start my PC upgrade during Black Friday.

My current build is:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 OC to 4.2GHz
Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
Mobo: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB)
GPU: Asus GTX780 OC 3GB
PSU: Corsair CX650M

Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade all at once so just wondering what I'd see more of an immediate benefit from upgrading first?

At this stage I'm eyeing off a Ryzen 5 1600 + Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 Mobo and for the GPU maybe a GTX 1060 6GB?

I'm in Australia just for price reference. Thanks!

Both the R5 1600 and GTX 1060 will be huge leaps from what you have. The 580 8G typically edges the 1060, and at least in the US, has been priced below it this week - you might keep an eye out for that. The R5 1600 is a great part at like USD$180. The Core i3-8350K has been beating it in a few games, usually when single-core performance is more important (so Core i3-8350K in FPS, R5 1600 in Open World games). 8350K requires a more expensive motherboard and thermal solution, so total TCO goes up. Still, at USD$180-190, it's worth considering.

As for which one I'd go first, that's tough. The FX-6300 and 780 both top out around 1080p60. If you get the R5 1600, it'll push the bottleneck on your 780. If you get the GPU, it'll push the bottleneck on the 6300. Generally, this is a decent time to buy a CPU and they've had very long lifecycles, so I might invest in that sooner, then get the GPU as the 1080p-centric GPUs will only get cheaper next year.

Sounds great thanks for the detailed response!

Hopefully it'll only be a month or two between getting everything but I know I won't be able to resist installing whichever one I get first.

I'll keep my eyes out tomorrow for some of the other parts you mentioned, I've basically just based the ones I was thinking of on the builds in this thread and that the R5 1600 + GTX 1060 sounded pretty reasonable/affordable.

Can anyone in the UK recommend me a decent laptop/hybrid?

I need it for doing coursework and lots of media HD movies etc and fast web browsing I hate lag! I saw that there''s a surface pro deal on atm but it has an m3 processor and I don't know anything about that processor. but at a push that would be my limit of price £650 i can't go above that.

Been really tempted by the Predator Z271T but I want a 24" monitor, and preferably at 1440p as well... there's really not enough choice with g sync at the moment in the UK.

Preferences:
24", G-Sync, 1440p, VA, 4ms, 144hz, <£500

Would also go for an IPS panel, but I'm worried about poor black levels.

That surface is £599 now, if that makes a difference. Would be fine for HD video, but severely limiting for gaming. Fine for indie stuff, strategy games, and most things pre-Source engine.

Also I expect it will drop in price by a fair amount in January.

It has to be 27 inches if you want a 1440p monitor.

Yep that's my only reservation. I can deal with 1080p on a 24" monitor... which is annoying because I would happily pay the same price for a smaller monitor than they're offering :( I'd also pay like £400+ to get a 1440p version in either screen size.

I can't even sit further away from the monitor because I just don't have the space.

Got space on the wall for an OLED though 🤔

Slightly off-topic, but now that most people have transitioned out of here by now, I figured it's now time for me to do the same. To the people here and other threads, thanks for being a great community!

As a going away present, I'll be giving away a bunch of games for various services (Steam, GoG, Origin, Xbox, etc.) that I've been holding unto for years in the Free to a good home thread.

Take care!

PC Gaffers,

I’d like some advise and/or recommendations on how and if I should improve my current build (see below).

I’ve got about £600 to spend. Is it worth keeping the same MOBO and adding a i7-6700K and selling the i5-6600K? Or should I go the whole way and get a new MOBO and CPU combo? Something like this, perhaps? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi...el-core-i7-7800x-skylake-x-cpu-extreme-bundle

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Current build

- i5-6600K o/c to 4.5ghz
- Corsair H80i v2 CPU cooler
- MSI Gaming X 1080TI
- 16GB Corsair 3000mhz Vengeance LPX DDR4
- Asus Z170 Pro Gaming MOBO
- 650W Corsair RMx Fully Modular PSU
- Samsung 250GB 850 Evo SSD & 2TB S-ATAIII 6.0Gb/s, Hard Drives
- Corsair Carbide Air 540 Case

I think you can save up and wait for next year. Then you can compare with Z370 and Z390, the new mainstream i7 9700K is 8 cores, or you can get i7 8700K 6 cores.

Your PC is fine now, unless you have games or programmes needing more cores?

imo no reason to jump to 6700K.

Just bought a PG279Q 1440P 165hz IPS G-sync for $480! I'm so hyped.

I also a PG27AQ 4k 60hz IPS G-sync but I never played with a monitor over 60hz and I want to see the hype.

Can't wait to see what my 1080ti can do :)

I actually completely forgot I posted this lol Thanks for the feedback but I ended up getting a slightly used Surface Pro 4 i5 with a keyboard for £550 thought that was a better deal overall :)

Couple of questions for the minds around here:

I am looking at moving from a 1060 to a 1080 in my system. I have an oculus and notice some bigger games chugging a bit.

Is the MSI Aero better than the base EVGA 1080?

Is 8gb ram good enough for that card? Would more do anything if I am either gaming or using the system?

Is the i5 2500k at 4ghz OC going to bottleneck me?

Got a Coolermaster HAF case and it looks like a tight fit. Anyone have experience with that case and those cards? Looks like I can remove a bay to make room in the middle of the case.

550w power supply enough for oculus and that card?

The cards are offered by my work in a promo situation and a really decent price so I am kinda locked to those.

Thanks for any help.

My PC is more than fine, at the moment. I just feel that whilst I’ve got some cash, it’s never a bad idea to upgrade (if of course the upgrade is worth while!)

probably more or less the same, assuming they’re both blower cards?

VRAM on the card or system RAM?

Depends. It’ll definitely limit your frames at say, 1080p, but at higher resolutions, probably not. Even if it did, you’d mainly be GPU bound at 1440p and higher anyway.

Should be fine, I’m using a 1080 with a 550w PSU and had no issues

Thanks yeah it helps a ton. Both are blowers but went with the EVGA and looking to upgrade the rest depending on the issues if any I see in the future. I assume 8gb ram system memory is ok for now.

Any games to really show off what this card does? Steam or Oculus stores?

8Gb is serviceable, depends on how much multitasking you do really. For instance, with 8Gb I couldn't play Rainbow 6 and have Discord/teamspeak, shodwplay and uPlay all running in the background without getting harsh 20FPS drops. 16Gb solved it. If you don't have issues like that, then stick with 8Gb for now.

Ryse is a really damn good looking game, not the best gameplay but the visuals on highest settings wipe the floor with any other recent games I've played. It's also quite cheap now.

Built this over the weekend. Tight case to work with but overall pleased with it. Needed a fan splitter that came in today. I stuck a RX card in it until I can get a 1070TI Mini to come in.

The 1080 Ti just released in May so the next x80 Ti probably won’t come out till Fall 2019 if we follow the same release in schedule. Going from a 1070 to 1080 Ti is well worth the jump which I also did recently.

1080 Ti came out in early March. Almost a year old. 1080 came less than a year after 980 Ti so I'm expecting the next x80 early next year...

I have a 10% off coupon from newegg and I am thinking on buying a 1080 at 520$ (-50$ with the coupon) for VR (I have a 970 but the image quality is quite low). I know the next gen of nvidia cards are around the corner (gsync monitor means no AMD for me). How would a potential 1170 measure up to a 1080, any predictions or performance, price and release date?

Also there are 3 models at this price level: MSI Armor, Zotac Mini and Gigabyte Turbo Fan

Gigabyte seems the worst and I would prefer a smaller card anyway. Anybody have experience with the other 2?

Started putting my pc together, and it wouldn't boot. Memory problem. Narrowed it down to the 1st and 2nd DIMM slots, it'll post with 3 and 4.

Gonna have to take the water block off later to check the cpu pins. Hopefully I can get a replacement if they're fucked, but it's not ideal this close to christmas :(

Can someone please confirm.
LGA 1155 MOBO and 1151 coffee lake i5 not compatible?

Correct. They aren't compatible. The 1155 socket supports Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors like the I5 2500k (sandy) and I7 3770k (Ivy). Coffee lake processors can only run on1151 socket motherboards boards with a z370 chipset.

Update. Pins on the MB were fine, had to order a replacement, which came today (several days early).

Plugged it all in, inserted the ram and prayed to the overclocking gods as I powered it on, running like a dream.

Idling in the bios at a slightly higher temp, but the heatings on so I'm chalking that up to higher room temp for now. At least I have peace of mind while I get through christmas.

Somehow my 980ti is stable @1465mhz on the gpu clock and 7800mhz on memory. Before that, I couldn't get anything stable over 1420mhz. Da fuk.

4790K -> 8700K
16GB DDR3-1600 -> 32GB DDR4-3200
H100i AIO -> Cryorig H7

It's the most pointless upgrade I have done in a while, but a USD 480 killer deal for both the 8700K and the MSI Z370M Pro Gaming AC mobo is simply too irresistible to pass up. Couldn't fit my old H100i in my new mATX case(hated the cable clutter anyway), so I switched back to the boring but effective Cryorig H7.

Now to stop caring about desktop CPUs for like the next 5 years.
