Hello PC-GAF,
finally planning to retire my 2500K config from 2011 this year. For my new config, I'm currently aiming for :
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
  • MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus
  • ~ 2x8 Go - DDR4 is it ?
  • ~ 550W Gold - probably Seasonic or Antec ?
I will reuse all the other pieces (case, GPU, SSD and cpu cooler).
Is there anything I should look out for with those specs ? Is it consistent ? Any recommended brand for the RAM or the PSU, anything I should be aware of ?

Based on the questions you are asking, it seems like you are very new to building PCs. Here is why I think that:

1. You are saying you plan to reuse the CPU cooler. There is pretty much no way in hell that you will be able to reuse a CPU cooler for socket 1155 and it be forward compatible with AM4.
If you need a cheap one, get this from Vetroo. It gets solid ratings for its price

2. It would be foolish to go for 550W. Skimping on the power supply is one of the dumbest decisions in PC building. A good PSU can last several generations. Get at least an 850W. They're not crazy expensive right now. EVGA is an outstanding brand

3. G-Skill is my go to RAM brand. Get 3600 rated memory. Yes go for 32GB. If you absolutely insist on only going with 16 then get similar specs. G-Skill is known to perform best with Ryzen.

I am curious what GPU that you are currently rocking.

It's a noctua. I need to go read doc on their site but I believe it should be fine with a M4 kit. They are no longer free, apparently ?

Have used an antec 550W for ten years now, I didn't have any problems with it - and the 5700X is supposed to run at a lower TDP than my current CPU. I need to run some simulations thought.
Agreed about the PSU, thought - but I prefer going for build quality ower wattage, personally.

I didn't have much luck with G-Skill in the past, I will see.
3600 then ? Ok thanks !

I bought a GTX 1660 early 2019 - just before the current pandemic circus began.
The idea at the time was to get something cheap and to last for 1, 2 years max. Funny that :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'll probably go with intel as today, lag1700 has another gen of support, am4 is practically dead with am5 around the corner. Depending on motherboard specs (dimm slots) I'll go with 32 gb for the ram (if you have only 2 slots) otherwise 16 is fine. Psu I'll futureproof a bit, a 750w gold+ is cheap enough this days and will follow you in the next couple years, got just yesterday a cm gold v2 850w for about 95€, even if the psu tier list it's still usefull.

You are right, completely forgot about that, I may need to rethink my plans. Thanks a lot !

That cm gold looks tasty.
I still believe 750W is overspec for my use case (I don't plan to run the next Battlefield in 8K) - and more generally, I expect a significant, and permanent, increase in energy cost during the next 18 to 24 months.

750w psu doesn't mean it always consume 750w, just it can get up to 750, real consume depends on the efficiency curve, you should be around 75% usage to have good efficiency (eli5 not perfect explanation), this is why I prefer a good not to big psu, especially if you're going to change gpu in next years, and psu usually last long time.

EVGA makes some of the best PSUs. That one I sent you is incredible.

i can actually buy a 3080 Ti founders edition through Nvidia now for £1049.

decent upgrade over a 2080 for 1440p 165hz? i could sell my 2080 for about £300-400 i think. but i'm worried a 3080 Ti will overload my psu

Well...how much power does your PSU draw?

I'll pass and wait sincerely, for that money I'm willing to risk the wait to nvidia 4series, it is indeed a nice upgrade over a 2080 but I'd still wait

I agree with this Ladioss Ladioss but instead of buying am4 buy Intel and get yourself the i5 12400 CPU. You get a huuuuge upgrade from your 2500k, and you can still upgrade to an Intel 13th gen 8 core later.

Alternatively the 4 core 8 thread i3 12100 will save you even more money and still be a night and day improvement over the 2500k.

Go for 32gb of 3600mhz cl16 ddr4 ram. Make sure you get a motherboard with ddr4 support.

I got a 750 watt power supply as well but sometimes I slightly regret not going for 850watt seeing how absurdly power hungry Nvidia cards are getting. But no big deal I just need to go for 4070 or lower. Something to keep in mind if you ever want to get the highest end cards.

My goodness you can get the 12100kf for 107 dollars right now on Amazon. That is just insane value! Will get you very respectable performance. That is what I would personally go with if I had to build something for work immediately.

Cheapest 3080 Ti I have seen so far $100 under MSRP for $1099.

Weird how it keeps being the Gigabyte cards getting the mega discounts.

Respectable performance going from a 2500K. I'd pair it with a B660 instead of a Z690.

Gigabyte's cards are generally less desirable. Plus the high end cards will be discounted first as 4090 is being announced next month.

If I didn't have the best Ryzen chip and I needed something NOW I'd have no problem at all getting the 12100. Beats the 1600af I just upgraded from despite 2 less cores on the i3.

Much better than a 6700k for 100 bucks? Nice.

The people who buy those cards will buy it anyway. Many in this thread.
Yeah, we got a lot of drug dealers in this thread. Going for 3080's now and then upgrading to 4090's and 7900 XT's in a few months.

Love to see it to be honest. It just makes me chuckle because I was going back and forth with myself on whether to buy the reference 6800 XT for the $650 on AMD's website. Perspective, lol

Following usa prices is hard, without tax is difficult to compare with euro prices, the cheapest i found a 6800xt in Italy is 860 euro... damn

Haha. I mean, if they got it, God bless 'em. I can't hate if they got it to spend. Just couldn't be me though, lol.

I just got a free am4 kit from noctua last week for my old NH-L12. Turns out it didn't mix well with my itx motherboard so I had to do some grinding on the giant heatsink. Wasn't pretty, but it fits.

I would suggest a psu upgrade. Not only in power but for a fresh piece of equipment. Most of the high end psu top out about 10 years on warranty. That's about the life of the bits inside. I had a couple seasonic platinum 660w and 860w. The 860 got used quite a bit through several builds and ended up failing recently. Both of them around 10yrs old. Haven't tried the 660 in a long time. I just gutted the machine to get that nh-l12 out for my current build.

How important is a dedicated sound card? I feel like those arent talked about much so maybe its minimal?

My current PC is just the integrated sound.

For headphones I've got the SteelSeries Arctis 7 if that matters.

My stand-alone speakers are just some generic Bose, but I'd upgrade them if it was worth it with a good sound card.

It completely does not matter.
Built in audio is perfectly fine.
Only get usb DAC (external sound card) if your headphones play too quiet and need more power but arctis 7 do not need more power.
Or if the headphones connect with usb or to the tv/monitor directly, then sound card is skipped entirely

I will also chime in that it is unnecessary for most as well. A dedicated sound card is just a DAC. There are some good explanations on DACs and whatnot.

I'm probably the only person here using a dedicated sound card but I've been using my Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD since windows 7 (now on W11) and love it. I hear that onboard audio has gotten a lot better over the years though.

Graphics cards pricing plummets under MSRP as cryptocurrency crashes

With Bitcoin and Ethereum losing 30% – 40% of its value in just last week alone, miners begin selling their graphics cards as they are no longer profitable (enough) to mine with. This is creating a new problem for board partners who already had an excess of GeForce RTX 30 and Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards at their hand, but also giving gamers a lot more choice to find new graphics cards.

Now, this is where retail and used market collide creating a massive influx of graphics cards, just as we saw in 2018, reports Tom’s Hardware. It is still too early to tell how the market responds to this crypto crash in the long term, but there are many miners that are not willing to wait for Bitcoin to bounce back. Some miners who already bought the cards at a much higher price, know that the profitability and ROI (return of investment) shrinks by the hour now. The only choice they have is to sell their cards right now.

Keep the freefall coming. AIB's, Nvidia and AMD took complete advantage of the consumers during the cootie virus. (Not that I blame them from a business standpoint) But nah, keep that freefall coming.

Can someone explain me what crisis core is ?
I've finished 7remake and loved but I had no idea what is happening at the end.
The only other ff game I finished was XV... but I was led to understand that ff games are not connected

Hi,

I currently game on a i5-8600k + gtx 1080ti + 16gb ddr4(2*8) on a 27-inch 1440p@144hz monitor with g sync

I love my monitor so I would like to keep using it and don't plan on migrating to 4k.

I want to build a new pc to be able to game on ultra with the highest fps I can get while finally being able to have ray tracing.

I was thinking of going with something like this and was looking forward to your opinions if it all makes sense.

I like some competitive multiplayer like Apex Legends but really love AAA single player. I would really like to be ready for 2023's roster of games.

Cpu : i7 12700k
Cpu cooler: should I use my current evga aio(clc 240) or go for a better one/air cooler instead?
Gpu : rtx 3080 ti
Moherboard : asus prime z690 wifi
Ram : ddr4 or ddr5? If 16gb ddr4 is enough I could use what I have or should I go with 2*16?
Ssd : samsung evo 970 plus m.2 500gb and 2tb
Psu: I need help on that...
Fans and case: I also need help on that. I'm not a fan of the phanteks eclipse case I have.

Thanks

Still don't think it's worth it though for say a 3080. It's basically MSRP where I am, but might only be eight weeks until the 4080 drops which will bring massive gains.

I completely agree. Nobody should be paying OG MSRP for any of these cards. Let them sit on 'em and lose money for being cocksuckas. And especially as you eluded to that the new cards are coming in a couple months.

Next gen nvidia cards are delayed so it won't be as soon as you expect. I'm still looking for a 3080 because of power efficiency.

I have this PSU and it's a workhorse. My old corsair rm750x got buzzy within 2 years. Could've RMA'd it but keeping it as a backup. If you have a microcenter locally, it goes on sale sometimes and is a really good price-to-performance unit. Would be plenty for a 4080 and 12700k build, assuming you're not going to do any crazy overclocking (and you shouldn't need to on the CPU end, surely). The 4080. That's the card you should wait for. Coming from someone with a 3080 who prefers to play at or near native 4k and 120 fps (OLED as monitor) with high settings, I can tell you the 3080ti is not going to be able to hit your desired settings in most of the latest AAA titles. It's a beast of a card, sure. But only 10% or so better than the 3080 12GB (which is marginally faster in most titles than the 10gb).

not gonna lie i was tempted to get a 3080 Ti for £960. nvidia sells them for £1040 on their site. ebay sellers are desperate to get something back right now :messenger_grinning_sweat:

fuck 'em. i hope they lose their money. i'll wait for 4000 cards now :messenger_smiling:

Price to performance that's still not a good deal. In the US, you could've gotten a 3080 founders for $699 the other day fairly easily via Best Buy (and they're readily available used for less than that on eBay, albeit probably burned out from mining).

The fact that the 3080ti, 3090, and 6900xt have the performance edge will mean nothing in a few months when the 4070 eclipses them all, the 3080 easily trounces them and the 4090 embarrasses them. Assuming no more than a $100-200 msrp hike on the 4080, it's going to be the best of the lot again.

I'm scared the bots will buy all the 4000 series cards and sell for double the msrp or more. I can find new 3080 ti's for a little less than the msrp. You think I should still wait?
