What kind of games you like?

Thats monster PC my dude anythings gonna look gorgeous.

Elden Ring is gorgeous, Witcher 3 with mods. Cyberpunk obviously will look incredible

If you think you might want to try out some strategy games try Total Warhammer 3, those battles will look amazing with that rig.

BF2042 or CoD for the shooters as mentioned.

I got RTX 3080 Ti for 600 bucks, pretty good buy I gotta say
And I was wondering if 110W in idle is normal
And I googled and found out it is caused by "maximum performance" setting in drivers - power settings
With setting "normal", the card eats 35W in idle
For the last 8 years that setting of maximum performance was always first thing I did after installing new drivers
So I was likely burning three times the amount of electricity I could have for the last 8 years for no reason

Fuck me

It could have been another 8 years so good thing you looked it up.

Why did you enable it in the first place?

We all do stupid shit. When I was a laptop guy I'd keep the thing practically bundled up in blankets while I used it in bed. I was 14 and wondered why I was overheating and basically bricked after a year.

As long as you're moving forward it's okay 😂

Funny thing, because one of the Assassin's Creed games years ago - probably Black Flag or Unity - was dropping framerate on the default setting, and google told me "maximum performance" fixed it, and it did.
So I figured hey it makes sense to use GPU to its fullest, right? And never thought about it, because I never expected this setting to affect power consumption in idle as well.

Fucking Ubisoft, I swear..

Of course, I reran some benchmarks now (Cyberpunk, Kingdom Come, RDR2) and the "normal" setting gives me the same exact performance as "maximum performance" (actually in Cyberpunk I had 2fps extra with normal).

Oh well, at least you noticed now that the power consumption is really sky rocketing for PC components.

GPUs are still so expensive here, it's insane.
New 3080+ GPUs are nowhere to be found, or at 1000+€ or even more insane prices.
Market price for a used 3080 (which has likely mined) is 600€, 800€ for a 3080ti...

I'll have to stretch the life of my 2070s for a little longer I guess.
Also considering AMD for the first time in the last decade...

I feel pretty lucky for getting 3080Ti for 600€. I did have to spend 5 hours of my time travelling to get it though, since the guy didn't want to send it.

I hope nVidia, Intel and AMD will reign it in again in the future..
And Germany stops being fucking stupid and goes back to nuclear. And Austrians stop whining about our nuclear plants.

Wait so you SHOULDN'T put it on maximum performance?

You totally SHOULD if you want three times higher idle power consumption and zero performance benefit while gaming!

Sigh, I want pcie 4.0 storage (like in my ps5) and more storage but my 10700k only supports pcie 3.0. I could either buy a pcie 4.0 drive and be capped at 3.0 speeds for now and then just carry it forward whenever I do upgrade the rest of my system, or I could just go ahead and upgrade my cpu, ram, mobo, and cpu cooler, then maybe use my leftover parts for a second system. If I just plop the new drive in this system and use it say 2 more years, I’ll probably want a pcie 5.0 drive by the time I do upgrade. Hmmmm…

I'd wait for Direct Storage results before jumping in on PCIe4 on PC. I'm on a PCIe4/5 platform and still use a PCIe3 drive. PCIe3 might still be good enough on PC for years to come.

How's your Raptor Lake system coming? And what did you choose? 13700K? Yeah? Yeah?!?!?!

Will putting your nvme ssd in the slot under a 4090 cause an issue with the drive getting too hot? (A 4090 basically covers most of the slots)

edit: I doubt it

edit 2: I did it and temps are fine

It's going great. Running everything beautifully, ended up getting a nice overclock on my DDR4 RAM too.

I ended up going with 13600K when it went on sale for $300, couldn't justify 40% more for 2 more P-cores. It was the right choice for me since I didn't want to upgrade my cooling.
What do you guys use for pc audio? a PCI-express sound card? The built-in motherboard audio? A usb DAC?
Built in motherboard Optical S/PDIF to my AV Receiver.

The moment has arrived, i'm gonna maximize these black friday days to buy the majority of parts for the new build but i need some advices because i'm pretty noob with this shit.

I'm going with a 1000w psu gold, some advices on the best models are very welcome.

Any specific model of motherboard to search for a 13600k? I don't care for the majority of features like wifi etc. and i don't overclock nothing so no super pricey moba that i'm never gonna squeeze, just something sturdy that doesn't bottleneck a vanilla 13600k/modern gpu in any way.

I'm probably gonna buy ddr5 ram, what do i have to look to see if they are actually faster than the best ddr4? Because last time i checked there was a discount on ddr5 ram but it was a bit slower than ddr4 in gaming.

Do i have to look something specific for the ssd to use the direct storage? Or any pcie 4.0 2tb compatible with ps5 and sex is ok? Does it make any sense to buy a pcie 5.0?

Can you people name a couple of well know european stores for pc parts that usually do black friday discounts? I don't wanna be forced to only buy from amazon.

Thanks in advance.

Found a used 3080 for 625EUR finally, which usually goes for well above 700 EUR, up to 800 here on the second hand market.

Still has warranty (at least one year) and I had it registered on EVGA.

I was tired of the tanked performance and the lack of HDMI2.1 of my 2070 Super.

Finally being able to play many modern titles in +1440p and 60fps.

I'm already on chrome but i try to avoid shitty traductions made by web browsers especially for technical stuff where details are important, usually any decent site has double or triple language to chose, i can't believe that in 2022 they only have german as a language in their site.

Is casekin.de any good? This one has english language.

Export of computer parts isn't really the focus historically and Germany isn't exactly a "xenophone" country. English language skills are way behind compared to countries like Netherlands or Scandinavian countries.

As for caseking.de I can't really say anything and if it would be anecdotally anyways. But it's a company founded in 2003 and has its business in Berlin and Google reviews are 4,1 so it practically a safe and good shop to order from.

Its easier for Dutch people to speak English because foreign barbarians could never learn our perfect language.

Hi all! I am looking to upgrade one of the following and would like your advice on best bang for buck.

I currently have:
  • MSI 3070ti 8GB Suprim
  • i7 9700K CPU
  • 16GB DDR4
Is the processor a bottleneck for this build ATM? If so, what is the next logical upgrade from the 9700k? I heard either Intel Core i5-12400 or Intel Core i7-13700K . I prefer to stick with INTEL btw.

Is it worth upgrading to a 4090 from the 3070ti?

Thanks for your advice!

Going from a 3070 Ti to a 4090 is a HUGE jump in performance. What resolution are you playing at and what frame rate are you aiming for? I would definitely upgrade the cpu before putting a 4090 in that system.

As far as upgrades, I would consider either the 13600K or the 13700K (preferred for 4090) depending on your budget.

I play at 1440p (25660x1440) on a 32" monitor and aim for 120 FPS. If I don't upgrade to a 4090 anytime soon, is it still worth upgrading my CPU for my current setup?

A 3070 Ti should still be very capable at 1440p, what games are you playing?
Whether upgrading the cpu is worth it will depend on what performance you are getting and if you want more performance. A 13th gen cpu will be a step up but as for how much... I'd recommend watching a review of Intel 13th Gen CPUs like this:

To see how big of a difference the cpu upgrade makes.

Any cpu upgrade you intend is coming with a new motherboard upgrade too. AMD or intel. You have to get a new mobo. You're on their old socket platform. Unless you intend only i9 9900 and that's kind of a pointless upgrade.

Wait for amd to release their new gpus and force nvidia to drop prices before you even consider 4090.

At this point he should wait for the Ryzen X3D CPU's expected to be unveiled at CES, they'll likely be the uncontested best gaming CPU's across the board.

For the GPU, he can't buy a 4090 anytime soon unless he's paying scalper prices. Honestly they're more likely to RAISE 4090 prices than drop them. It's Nvidia's most successful high end GPU in history with 130,000 units sold first month @ an average of $1800+. The instantaneous and perpetual sell outs strongly implying actual demand (in the absence of shortages) was likely somewhere between 300k - 500K units in 1 month, which is absolute insanity for a $2000 component. I don't expect you'll be able to buy one until mid-2023 at best as retailers haven't even come close to fulfilling LAUNCH DAY preorders and can't even provide estimates of doing so (meaning they're several months behind). When Best Buy does a drop randomly in the middle of the day, THOUSANDS of people try to buy the handful they get in. The 4090 is the "Wrong-est" media pundits and online commentators have ever been about a product, with a clear consensus it would be rotting on shelves after a week cause it's so expensive. People are still wildly out of touch with how high modern wages have climbed post-covid, $1600 is petty cash to the vast majority of western households in 2023.

Probably a better thread for this, but can't seem to find anything.
I am thinking of replacing my aged PC, and I am leaning toward a gaming laptop because I may be bouncing around a bit in 2023.
SO right now I am looking at a strong 3080 ti laptop with 32gb DDR5 and 12th gen I7 . (Will be using with monitor a large percentage of time) Should I bite or should I wait for 13th gen laptops with RTX 40 series in the spring

I would suggest sffpc instead of a laptop. You fan fit quite a nice pc inside small cases these days. The bonus is you can upgrade it later. Using a monitor with a sffpc makes more sense than laptop. But, if you're like me and don't want to carry a monitor around, a laptop makes sense.

I am not sure what new laptops will be like. The 4x series is more power hungry than last gen. Laptops have certain power restrictions on them. To ignore that turns the machine into a ridiculously large contraption that makes no sense. The power bricks will have to be larger all around. Baterries are going to be bigger(for the machines that can hold it, max is 99whr) which will make the entire case even bigger. I have a feeling slim laptops with decent power are going to be much bigger.

I bought a laptop a while back but still want a larger one instead, so I'm constantly looking for a deal on the few that I like.

Pretty much I am looking at things like taking it on a plane, taking it somewhere to play some Street Fighter V and 6 when it hits and Tekken but still being able to hook it up to a monitor and be able to play something like Cyberpunk 2077, 40k: Darktide and FFXIV.
I know with a laptop if you take equal specs from desktop to laptop the laptop will always be about 20% lower but I think that will still be plenty for a few years

You are on socket 1151. Last of that gen. Every cpu after is on a new one. I don't know what they are up to now, honestly. I'm on the same platform as you with an i9 9900. I'm pretty sure they have gone 2 sockets past us.

Whatever cpu interests you get the compatible mobo. Asus, msi, asrock...whatver. Mobo is really the least important part in terms of gaming ability. Ever since gigabyte screwed their psu customers, I avoid that company. That's me. If you don't care, they still make decent crap, I just didn't like their treatment of that situation.

Any laptop will last quite a while, you just have to adjust settings. I had gtx 1060 laptop that lasted about 4 years. I have now a 3070 or ti, dont even remember, I use it so little because I hate the 15" size.

If you want to game on the plane you'll get maybe 2hrs max before the battery dies. Thats with a really good battery.

There are some really small pc cases with decent hardware out there. Just lookup sffpc on reddit. Lots of people take their pc in their backpack on a plane.
