I don’t use anywhere near that power obviously, but I do have a 4090.

Nvidia was expected to go balls to the wall in power consumption, but the 40 series ended up being quite efficient.
Yeah, that was a surprise to me also, i've thought the power consumption would be enormous on the 40 series which it was not.

Really? Then i stand corrected.
Yeah, your system takes whatever required DC power as in when plugged into a motherboard; that dictates how much current is needed. And going over isn't going to do anything but give you more options and flexabilty for future expansions. Plus be handle any power spikes from components better and allow users to push their components harder with overclocking. You don't want to be near the rated full load capacity on the PSU as it will affect the longevity of it.

PSU's are most efficient around the 50% mark so that may be a consideration as well for those looking to build one around that and their usage and parts.

Do monitoring tools show current electricity usage by component? I have a monitor I could plug into the wall and then plug to PC into that to see total system load but I’m curious about what’s drawing what. I don’t have any physical drives in my new rig so I feel like it probably draws less than my old PC with 4 physical hard drives

Msi afterburner can show you GPU and CPU power draw in games. Hardware Info has more stats.

Of course software won't be 100% accurate.

I'm sporting a 1500 Watt be quiet! Dark Power Pro 12 (80 PLUS Titanium). I'll be fine for... well, forever probably. :D
1600w dark power pro 13 here.

one of the most useless purchases ive made, but i needed a psu at a weird time, and oh well.
for me, the only cool part about high capacity PSUs is theyre generally quieter under load since you're only using a fraction of their capacity.

Posted a while back with a new build I was thinking of upgrading too. Still haven't purchased anything but I've decided on a standard AM5 base, still indecisive on how much I want to spend / how much performance I want from GPU. Made a list:

7800X3D, 32GB 6GHZ Ram, 2TB NVMe, with:

GPU ------ PRICE --- 1440p 15 Game Avg FPS

4070 ----- $2530 --- 102 fps
4070 TI --- $2820 --- 128 fps
4080 ----- $3230 --- 159 fps

7800 XT -- $2480 --- 108 fps
7900 XT -- $2850 --- 139 fps
7900 XTX - $3080 --- ? fps

Prices are total system $CAD, including new monitor.

FPS numbers from TECHSPOT, no RT, no upscaling. They didn't test the 7900 XTX in this set so didn't include a fps number. They have a 15 game average for it in a different article but it's not the same list of games.

Thought it was an interesting comparison, not helping me decide though 🤣

Since it seems to me that you're looking for a futureproof build and you're willing to spend thousands of dollars, then there's only one option for you on the GPU front: RTX 4090.

You can go for a 4080 if the 4090 gets you way out of your planned budget, but what's important is that you never go with AMD GPUs. Never.

That's the thing though I don't think anything can ever really be futureproof, and although I am able I don't think I am willing to drop like CAD$2100 on a single component (4090). Plus I'm never going to go 4K, I'm still on 1080p 60hz going up to 1440p 144hz. 4090 just seems silly, and potentially harder to sell such an expensive enthusiast part when upgrading later.

All those builds are within like $700 of eachother which I guess isn't that big when spending ~3K anyway, so yeah going 4080 or 7900 xtx seems like the obvious choice. There's just so many other things to consider (upscaling tech, etc.)

I feel like going with a sub $1000 GPU and upgrading every generation, with that kind of card being maybe easier to resell? Yeah not sure, and then maybe I'll be disappointed with the performance of that kind of card after 1 year when the next AAA comes out and it can't push a higher fps that I want.

The last time I built a system it wasn't so complicated lol. I just grabbed the fastest card available and it was only like 700 bucks.

need some advice on what to upgrade next, i’m currently on AM4 with a 5600x and 3060ti. (did have a 6750xt but was getting game crashes and driver issues with amd gpu) i play at 1440p.

do i buy a AM5 board and 7800x3D? or buy a 4070? will probably be doing this around January though..

You will get far greater performance upgrade with GPU swap.

4070 is perfect for 1440p.

my 5600x will still be fine with it?

I had 5600X and 4070 and it was perfectly fine. You will be GPU limited 90% of time, CPU will limit you only is some cases.

I changed 5600X to 5800X3D but in reality I would be fine with 5600X, I'm just stupid about hardware :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Most games yes. I have one paired with a 7900xt for reference.

Of course.I use a 3080Ti with a 5600x and it's great

thanks guys, will go for a gpu upgrade first then. :messenger_ok:

I mean, when I said futureproof I was thinking of "he won't need to worry about VRAM limitations, RT performance, etc, etc until the next generation of Nvidia graphics comes out in 2025".

I had never considered your point on such a high-end card being difficult to resell later on, but I agree with it.

Who has a 4090? If you have one, which variant did you get? I'm getting one this week and looking for opinions or thoughts yall have on your variant.

I am looking to get a PC after many years just sticking with consoles. I have a Series X and a PS5 but I am interested in trying some games that only exist on pc/Steam AND I want to play games with mods - perticulary souls mods like archstones/convergence/randomizers, Fallout New Vegas overhauls, Halo with campaign tweaks, Witcher 3 combat mods, etc. The thing is my budget is right around 1k and I don't really want to build it myself unless the savings are extreme or the bang for buck is significently higher. I am not super particular when it comes to performace as long as it can handle mods like the ones listed above and can run newer games decently enough without a bunch of noticable stutter (I am very forgiving and just for refernce I can go from Bloodborne to Demons Souls remake no problem.. the frame rate difference doesnt affect me at all).

SO all that said is it even possoble to get somehting prebuilt for that budget that can handle mods? If so any current recommendations? Or should I kill the dream and stick to vanilla games?

Recent 4090 buyer and newby pc builder. Got the Asus ROG Strix 4090 because I need 2 hdmi ports to switch between desk mode and couch mode in the mancave. Very happy with it.

So what's the deal with Intel's "E" cores"?

Is the issue only with this game? Is it with more?

Are "E" cores the worst thing intel has ever added in their CPUs? I want to build a new i5 PC but all i5 CPUs have those crappy cores in them. The only one that doesn't is the 12400 but that also only has 6 cores and it's old already. I'm not going to build a new PC using a 2 year old CPU. But there's no current i5 with 8 P cores and no E cores. You gonna have to get an i7 for 8+ P cores and maybe disable the E cores after that but isn't that just wasted money? I'm thinking of building an AMD based PC just for that. Thanks Intel.

Everyone is telling you to get the 4070, but I'm inclined to feel you will get a better long term use from the CPU upgrade.

You will definitely get more immediate uplift with the 4070 though, but don't wait too long. A 5800X3D will give you a nice boost without investing heavily into AM5.

The TUF Gaming model I have also has 2 HDMI ports, which I too take advantage of. I run the 2nd one directly to my soundbar so I can use DTS:X without the audio delay that is VERY noticeable when running Atmos through the C1 OLED into the soundbar using eARC.

I’m building my first personal pc in years with some hand me down stuff from my uncle. I’m getting a 5800x3d, a noctua ns-d15, a 6800xt, a gigabyte x570 master, 32 gigs of ram, and a 1tb Samsung 970 pro drive.

I’m wondering a few things. What’s a good power supply for this? I think the 6800 uses 2 8 plugs? I want to use a controller for gaming as I will be on my couch, which wireless one should I get (I’m leaning towards an Xbox one)? Is it best to use the built in Bluetooth? I want a wireless headset, what should I look at? Again, can I use the Bluetooth for that?

For a case I’m think a fractal torrent, seems decent

Finally got it up and running. Had issues with installing windows 11 and running EXPO. A bios update fixed all that.

Getting some sweet gains in Forza Motorsport where my benchmark went from 70fps to 96fps average with zero stutter.

Hey Guys, got an urgent question.
I have the Crucial Ballistix bl2k8g32c16u4b m8fe (16gb) of RAM in my PC.
Now i have bought another 16GB of this RAM but this one says Crucial Ballistix bl2k8g32c16u4b m8fe1
With the 1 at the end. Are these compatible to my older RAM or won't they work with my existing RAM?
I am asking because i probably have to remove my Graphics Card to access the RAM slot properly.

it will work just do it!

but you going to have 4 x 8gb in your PC, it may hampers simply turning on XMP, you may have to manually tune the ram

Thanks for clarification. Yeah i will have 4 x 8gb i hope it doesn't take a huge performance hit. i will turn on XMP as you said.

got a new cooler today, last one was fine but snagged a Thermalright peerless assassin 120 for £32. messed around with Rem0o's fan control software as well and got my temps much better, can't hear any of the fans at all now even when gaming, highly recommend both.

yeah.
you can mix RAM brands, speeds, etc.

but you have to run all the RAM at the speed of the slowest stick.

it's so dumb you still cant set fan curves based on gpu temp in the BIOS (at least that im aware of).

ideally id want 2 fan curves per fan, where the fan ramps up when either GPU or CPU hits certain temps.

yup, the fan control software in bios on my motherboard wasn't great and ended up coming across this the other day. give it a try you can set up any curves you like on it.

https://github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases if you want to give it a try (y)

I wound up getting the Phantom Spirit 120SE (Peerless Assassin's successor) for my build. Just waiting for the rest of the parts to come and I'll start the new build. I didn't want a water cooler this time since the 7800x3d is pretty good in power management.
