I don't know -- when I'm in a rut I usually model organic things, I find them to be good practice. Minimize the poly count, make sure the UV maps are accurate, all the typical stuff you'd do when minimizing render time while still keeping true to the form. I suppose it really depends what your portfolio is focusing on -- what exactly are you going for? Modeling, animation, special effects?
