I suck at THUG... help me get better

I just started playing THUG2remix on the PSP, and man I suck donkey's balls.
I'm playing in Classic Mode because I don't dig that story mode stuff, and even the first course, Barcelona, is giving me a headache.

I know the controls are significantly different to the old PS games, because of the lack of shoulder buttons, but that shouldn't be killing me so badly. I only beat one of the requirements so far!!! (grinding the world's longest bench).

Anyone have some quick tips to make me good at this?

(BTW, what's a "manual"... as in manual the subway exit?)

Manuals were added in THPS3, I think. In the GCN games, you have to hit R just as you're landing from a halfpipe trick in order to transition from that trick to another without breaking your combo.

A manual is when you have the front of the board or the back of the board in the air, when you are skating with the other set of wheels. In most THPS games, you need to ollie, then press up down, or down up on the analog and you will manual. It is a good way to connect tricks.

You don't know how to manual - that's your problem. Tap up, then down.. you use it to link combos

edit: god damn this board moves fast :)

Mej, you're talking about reverts. Manuals were added in THPS2

Woops, my bad. Then manuals were added in THPS2, and it is what you do AFTER doing what I said above in order to land a transitional halfpipe trick in order to extend the combo. It's been awhile, sorry.

Heh jonny, I believe the THUG games have a few differences to them. Hope I didn't get you a defective copy. ;)

Oh yeah, how's the analog nub issue coming along?

Learn two things:

Manual - Like everyone else said, down->up or up ->down. Be ready to consistently tap this everytime you're about to touch the ground.

Reverts - When you come down from a quarter/half-pipe jump tap R right when you're landing and immeadiatly do a manual. This will let you continue the combo from the jumps. Also note that hitting R while in the air will transfer you into or out of a ramp/halfpipe.

Then just learn to mix up. Each time you do a trick the points gained from it in that combo go down. So instead of doing rail combos all day, try doing a rail combo -> manual to a ramp -> air combo -> revert+manual -> manual tricks, etc... to maximize your points. Another thing is that specials have always given insane points since they added the revert in THPS4. By going in a half-pipe and doing 3 or 4 combo'ed air specials -> special grinds -> special manuals you can get a ton of point really quick.

It'll take some time to figure it all out but the key is to always be in a single combo. Basically connect everything you do and see how far it can take you. Then learn to bail out and make a safe landing when you're near your max.

Ah, the manual.

A friend of mine has the THUG games, and I never even bothered to bother with manual challenges. I just passed it off to him and he'd destroy them. I never played either of the THUG titles hardcore enough to bother.

Well, my score's improving thanks to the manual, but I'm still having trouble on the first stage. How do you get the E in S-K-A-T-E? How do you get the O in C-O-M-B-O without breaking your run? Where is the secret tape? And most importantly how do you "manual the subway"? Do you just have to manual down the steps?

LOL the good ol' combo runs. Trust me, once you get the hang of manuals, grinding, hp's and reverts in one combo, it is extremely easy to get Combo in 95% of cases.
I remember when i first got THPS2 and dimissed manuals as they were a bit meh in points.... then i slowly began throwing them in and combos sky rocketed in points. Defintely a huge key in points. Also do them when you land in a HP, revert than manual, whenever exiting grinds, etc.

On the Xbox version you had a run out timer (pick up the board and run around) and doing it is a pretty big combo bonus for some reason, i finished most of the challenges just doing big grinding tricks then picking up the board, doing an olly back onto the board onto the rail etc.

Well I've still only cleared 3 objectives in Barcelona... 30k, manual the subway and grinding the world's longest bench. I opened the bridge over to the skate park. I'm not sure if that makes getting the E in S-K-A-T-E harder or easier... I guess I should look for FAQs for the PS2 version... couldn't find any for the PSP version anyway.
