I think I play way too many video games because even ChatGPT is struggling to find suggestions for me that I haven't played already

I gave it the following challenge:

"Is there an open world sci-fi game with a strong narrative and characters, similar in style to Assassin's Creed 2 but with guns?"

And it gave me the following options:
Mass Effect
Horizon Zero Dawn
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Prey
The Outer Worlds
Elex

And then it just started going in circles with those six options. All of which I already played, along with any sequels to those games.

The only sequel that I haven't played yet is Elex II but the first game wasn't really my cup of tea and after playing a bit of Elex's II trial, I figured it's just more of the same so I'm not really interested.

On one hand it's pretty baller that I have enough free time to game so much, but on the other it sucks that there's barely anything left out there to surprise me, and I'm doomed to replay the same games until something new comes around later this year, hopefully good enough to grab my attention.

I'd say you need to broaden your scope. You seem to be looking for a particular type of game with the idea that only that type of game will scratch your itch. If you just look for a game with a cool concept, you'd be surprised what you end up liking.
For example, very few games have a strong narrative. Very few games have characters that are fleshed-out beyond their role in the plot.

I'm sure if you describe in detail, exactly what it is about assassins creed 2 that you enjoyed so much, someone here will be able to recommend something similar.

For what it's worth, I asked gpt3.5 the same thing you did and it gave me these:
  1. Mass Effect series (as mentioned earlier)
  2. Fallout series (specifically Fallout 3 and Fallout 4)
  3. Deus Ex series (specifically Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided)

And this isn't even getting into indies or early access stuff. There are way more games to play once people let go of preconceptions

Well, the real problem is that... I literally played all of these already, lol.

That's why I'm saying that I may be playing games too much. When I'm a mood for something more or less specific (eg. something sci-fi themed and open world) then there aren't many options left.

It's supposed to mean that you're claiming you play too many video games because ChatGPT can't come up suggestions for your SUPER SPECIFIC requirements...it listed everything that qualifies because it's incredibly niche. Branch out a little if theres only a dozen or so games that meet your criteria.

If you’re on Steam click on a genre and explore. Maybe YouTube top sci-fi games of 2022. Check your friend’s wishlists.

I think you need to get out of the limited AAA space and do some exploration/research.

You might have some fun with Remnants of the Ashes, the Sniper Elite series, Zombie Army, Warhammer Space Marine, Strange Brigade…

It was more like a point of reference. An open world action game with a narrative and character focus isn't really that uncommon. What's more uncommon are games that I haven't played yet. :pie_invert:

Although I'm not familiar with Strange Brigade. Quick look on some youtube vids kinda make it look like the zombies mode in CoD, so idk if it's what I had in mind... Could you tell me a little more about it?

It seems you've convinced yourself you've played everything you could possibly want to in that specific area. It's just impossible for a lot of us to imagine because there are waaaay too many good games out there

Anyway, my suggestions are:
- Use some game discovery service (steam's discovery queue/ interactive recommender works really well once you've set you filters, and it's effectively an endless sequence of game recommendations)
- Get into modding

Unless you only want to play the latest big budget games with a very specific camera type and a very certain type of gameplay and very specific type of narrative delivery, you should find what you're looking for

Maybe, but I'm being genuinely serious when I say that I play a lot of games, and it's not impossible that I've already played all of the ones that meet this criteria.

I usually have a similar problem with first person shooters. I literally played every game in that genre that's worth playing, and even some that probably aren't worth playing. It's super hard for me to dig up something new in that genre.

Maybe try bold narrative open world games, like Pathologic 2 or Deadly Premonition

I thought it goes without saying but I'm actually talking about some good games. If your solution is to reach into the septic tank of unity engine asset flips, visual novels or anime porn games that flood into Steam's store front every day, then no thanks. I'd rather just go read a book or something.

The Steam search tools are pretty decent for this. Type in some fitting genre names and see what pops up. You’ve covered the usual suspects but I’ve also heard some good things about Adaca which is supposedly a Stalker + Half-Life mix.


Homefront Revolution and Terminator Resistance may also be of interest.

Xbox 360-ps3 PC era alone probably has more games than you can handle

Yes, I'd love to play a story driven sci-fi action game set in an open world sandbox (or at least with some degree of freedom and non-linearity), and one that I haven't played to death already.

It would be nice if I could just endlessly keep replaying Deus Ex or Mass Effect but once you get to know these games so well that you can hear the lines of dialogue in your head before they're even spoken, then things start to get a bit stale, you know...

I'm just starved for some new franchise or a game to dive into and stick with it for a while instead of looking for a new game every few days. At this point I'm just considering going back to Cyberpunk which I haven't 100%'ed yet, although I wasn't the biggest fan of its open world. I expected it to be that new game that I'll keep playing for months like I did with The Witcher but it was a huge letdown.

There are many games that kinda fit this requirement but most of them are nothing special. Like Prey or The Outer Worlds. I played them once, liked the experience, but never felt the urge to play them again. It's been a long time since I got into a game or a series so much that I'd just keep replaying them over and over.

It was an exaggeration. I bet there are thousands of good games you haven't played yet. I'm not talking about asset flips or visual novels. But good games. If you're willing to play older games then your options widen even more. From ps2 to ps3 there are hundreds of greatly reviewed games.

I think the problem is more that the request you gave it is extremely narrow in scope. Open world games with strong narratives and characters are few and far between. Particularly in recent years. And sci fi, particularly space based sci fi has always been an underserved genre, especially so in big open world narrative titles. There’s hardly any of them.

Probably spent about 200 hours playing each one. I like 1s atmosphere and setting better (great game to play around Christmas time), but I prefer 2s gameplay and endgame content, it's just more fun.

I will take your word for it as I never got to the endgame in D2. Obviously I like it but somehow never got around to play more than dozen of hours and moved on to other things.
