Get him a severed head! He'll tell you if your pet is still alive!

Lame. You give tags with links to stupid things people say when they don't mean to sound stupid, not when they're intentionally trying to be dumb.

That's why I don't have a tag. I'm almost always intentionally stupid.

I agree he shouldn't get a tag for that one. Just looked somewhat funny with his avatar, so I tag'ed him just for my av-quote post ^^

So I went to go feed my chickens this morning, then I found one not moving with its eyes shut. So I tried to prod it with a stick, but it never moved, and I couldn't see any signs of breathing. So it's dead, but the weird thing is when I put them back in the coop yesterday they were all alright in good health. Weird to see that one of them has died all of a sudden?

It's even more disappointing because it was the only chicken that let me feed it and wasn't scared of me lol...had to be that one, eh?

Unfortunately chicken often don't show signs of an illness. How old was it?

It happens to everybody sometimes.

It does? We've had friends that have taken care of their chickens for years upon years and no cases of sudden death. Mind you, we've had this one friend who's black chicken suddenly died too - and we got them from the same batch (I mentioned it's black because it's a different colour to ours so maybe that has or hasn't something to do with it?)

We got it last year and it was already big, even though my dad is saying they were already a few months old???

A chicken may not be everyone's first choice as pet, but am I the only one who thinks some of the responses in this thread are pretty cruel?

Dude lost a pet.

Nah, you're right, some of the responses aren't that nice, (even if they're meant to be light hearted), but I've chosen to ignore them. Nothing against the people who wrote them -- like you said, chickens are unconventional pets -- but not exactly what I needed when I wrote the thread lol...

I appreciate the level headed responses here though.

Edited because probably a bit inappropriate.

Sorry, OP. Losing any pet is sad.

Two of our chickens died of illness. They went downhill pretty fast and were dead by the next morning. We gave our other two away to a place that has dozens of chickens and ducks. The new owner says they stick together like sisters.

So, when the chicken dies, does two second rule still apply? Is it two hours instead? You pick it up, sniff it...'yup, we still good'

Chickens are great, they keep your lawn healthy, they eat table scraps they deliver great tasting eggs (seriously, it's so much better than what you can get in your average american supermarket it's not even funny).
And when they finally stop laying you can butcher them for the best fucking chicken stock ever (you can't really get old chicken otherwise, and old chickens make for a much better soup).

They're also low maintenance and good natured animals in general.

Why don't you change your name to Chickenkov if you love chickens so much

An Ode To The Chicken

Oh common bird of stunted flight
To me you are a sheer delight
You give me eggs not to be hatched
But when they stop you’re soon dispatched
Into the pot to make a stew
Or roasted to a golden hue
You still provide although you’re dead
Good food to keep my family fed
And think not that I am uncaring
The fancy coop that you are sharing
Has water, food and sweet fresh air
So you can live without a care
Now eat your fill you great bird you
And please forget I mentioned stew.
