I've heard (probably unreliably) that McDonald's salads are so profitable it's not funny. In Australia a "lavish" chicken salad costs like $9, but because of it being almost entirely iceberg lettuce (plus cheap fake chicken, cheap salad dressing I believe sponsored by Heinz, and cheap cardboard bowls, etc), costs something like 40 cents to make.

In the US the salads at McDonalds use a mix of greens none of which are iceberg. Out of all the fast food places McDs is the best place for salad imo.
