If publishers try to sell full priced ports of old games on the Switch again...

Skyrim SE JUST came out. When the Switch version launches it will be full price just like the PS4 and XBO versions are.

If it turns out to be a 10$ price difference and the other Skyrim Remaster versions are still going for more or less original price, that's seems pretty much fine. But a significant difference as we saw with the Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U port vs. the Trilogy is effectively a middle finger to the customer. :p Might or might not happen again on the Wii U.

If late ports like skyrim won't be priced correctly:
1)few people will buy them
2)"3rd parties don't sell on nintendo"
3)no 3rd party support.

I hope switch games will be priced similarly to vita, 10-20 bucks cheaper than their ps4 equivalents.

Skyrim doesn't make sense, to be cheaper, as it's never been on a Nintendo platform before.
I do hope there's some...discount or incentive for people who own the Wii U versions to get the Switch versions though. So mostly Nintendo games. I hope saves can carry over too.

Yeeeah won't be happening.

When Mass Effect 3 came out on WiiU, it was cheaper to buy the whole trilogy on any other platform. Not quite the same as a barely four-months-old port of one game.

Skyrim has a much broader appeal as a standalone game and as a popular game in general, and it isn't the last part of a trilogy only available elsewhere.

Skyrim just launched on PS4 and Xbox One for full price right? And it's selling really well? Of course it will be full price on Switch, and you can hardly blame Bethesda.

I do agree that it's not a great idea for most games. See recently Rise of Tomb Raider bombing on PS4.

Do you think that Nitendo's ports of Wii U games to Switch will be sold at a discount price?

Honestly yes they should launch at 45 or something.

Although they can spin it off as: experience Skyrim everywhere! pay full price please.

I don't know, publishers have been getting away with selling remasters of 3 -5 year old games on the PS4, XBONE so why not the Switch?

The Skyrim remaster just sold 400k at full price in 3 days (NPD) and you think they are going to release it at a discount?

Did nintendo sell those Wind Waker and twilight princess remasters for a discount?

Nope. Well TP came with an amiibo and CD (In Europe) so while you paid full price for the package, you could say you paid a discount for the game if you count the individual parts.

WWHD was full price. The Ganondorf collector's edition was extra.

The difference being, there was no other current system you could get these on for cheaper. That was the problem with the Wii U's ports.

Switch game pricing will be interesting anyway. Most of Nintendo's first party releases in Europe were just 50 EUR (with some titles 40 EUR). Those prices are not that much higher than what the portable market currently has (40 EUR), but they are quite a bit below prices of X1 and PS4 titles (60-70 EUR).

So will Nintendo charge prices similar to competitors for their Wii U ports? Or will they charge prices more in line with their previous portable systems and Wii U?

The price of the others versions is basically irrelevant. RotTR was $60 on PS4.

I kind of hope they won't. Been paying £30~ for new releases for over a decade now thanks to Nintendo+online prices.

But I'm expecting an increase.

It's still a wildly exaggerated claim. There are over 700 games on the PS4 and based off a quick search, less than 30 of them are remasters and even fewer are demasters.
Really that's high as fuck. How many of those 700 games are even retail releases.

Only if you don't have options in terms of systems or are determined to play the game on a specific system for a reason.

RotTR was a timed exclusive for Xbox, iirc? That's quiet a bit different from a port of a years old game being sold with a considerable markup compared to even other ports/recent releases (Mass Effect 3 on Wii U). I don't know how cheap the XBone version of ROTTR was when the PS4 port released. But even there: If the PC or XBone port was being sold at lower price and you had the options, assuming that was the case, why would you go with the PS4 port?

Still, it's a relatively "short" while between the ports there and not a case of 2011 calling and asking if they can have their full price game back.

One issue for the Switch is that because it has such a different architecture and less power than the PS4 and XB1, porting games is going to require more work. For those consoles, if you start with the PC version, then you are already a good way towards a PS4/XB1 version. The difficulty in porting to the Switch is going to make publishers less likely to sell games for less on it.
Huh? Switch architecture is very similar to PC/XBox One/PS4, much closer than Nintendo's architecture has been to the competition since the GameCube. For the first time, they have a chipset that can do the exact same effects, the same pixel shaders and lighting and whatnot. And power is rumored to be much more powerful than Wii U, possibly even the same power as XBox One. It should take very little work to port any game to Switch. Heck, nVidia even made it a point to say it was going to be easy to port games to Switch. And we know Switch already supports Unreal Engine 4 out of the gate (Tegra X1 was shown off running the UE4 Elemental demo when it was revealed, Switch is using a custom chip based on either Tegra X1 or X2).

Oh, pubs and Nintendo will port it up big time. Just ignore them and focus on new stuff. That is what i currently do on PS4. Just focus on new stuff. If there isnt mich, that is more money in your pocket.

I dropped the port bias and now just spend my money on good games. If it's a remaster or a port and I haven't played it or I want it anyway, it's still worth the cost of admission to me.

Ports of existing titles are a reasonable first step for any new platform. Both the XB1 and PS4 got their share of ports early in the generation and they turned out fine

In Canada WWHD was cheaper when it launched. At the time most games were going for $59, with some newer launches (PS4/X1) starting to creep up to $69. WWHD was $49 and the Ganondorf collector's edition was $59.

TP came out here at $79, like all new games these days. But as was said, it came with an amiibo

I'm more concerned if the Switch is a success and third party publishers just ignore it anyway like with the Wii.

Yeah, version parity was a problem and likely will be again. What usually comes to mind for me is how Wii got a port of Call of Duty 3 at launch around the same time as the HD versions which sold admirably (outsold the PS3 version I believe), but then COD4 (the game that established COD as an AAA franchise) skipped it for two years. Like Nintendo never had a chance at matching the kind of audience the other two consoles had for that game.

All the while publishers like Capcom, Square-Enix and Take-Two were putting out or financing exclusive PSP games which had a shit software market outside of Japan. And Nintendo moneyhatted an exclusive GTA... for the DS. Dumb dumb dumb.

Wii U was dead in the water so I don't really blame third parties for bailing, it was just an unattractive product from the get-go.

How much were the 3DS ports of 15 year old N64 games? Let's not act surprised. The consumer can either buy it, wait for a deal, or not buy it.

I think people are overestimating how much value "play anywhere" has to the consumer. Look how the console ports on iPad are priced.

1st publisher to use "cartridge prices and shipping" as a justification gets a cookie.

Does it matter? People largely weren't going to buy third party ports anyway. You can buy a PS4 for the same price or cheaper than a Switch and those ports will be better on PS4 and will cost less than at the time they release on the Switch. If you're in the camp of handheld only gaming then I'd understand but who else is lining up for ports like Skyrim?

"If"? Has there actually been any non-port games shown for Switch yet besides that one unnamed Mario title?

I'm more worried about what they'll be making us pay for VC titles we already own this time around.

I was thinking about this earlier in the shower.

Am I really going to buy a new Pokemon game for $60? I don't know, Nintendo.

Nintendo did charge less then $60 for some of their Wii U retail games (I believe Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Captain Toad launched for less). I could see Nintendo to continue to do variable pricing for the Switch.
