"If "they" won't make it, fans will" - Games that were inspired, homage, or tribute to cult classic games? ( Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Yooka Laylee)

*cough* someone makes a Power stone 3 please *cough

We ALLLLL.... have that one game we wish [insert developer] would just make even though deep down inside you know "it won't sell", "the market has changed", "too arcadey", "that one developer that wants to make it but the team has all moved on".

Then you realize a new [insert game] (last spoiler code) will never come....

but then... an up-and-coming indie dev comes out, with the same level of passion you have, and decided to make _______!

What are some of your favorite games that were inspired, homage to, and tribute to past cult classes?

Song of horror looks pretty much like a 90s early 00s survival horror game. Hopefully more devs go for fixed camera horror. First person horror is getting long in the tooth.

Dusk, Amid Evil, Prodeus, Ion Maiden, Project Warlock, Ultrakill, and Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin are all homages/tributes to/extensions of 90's shooter design - from Wolf3D through to Quake/Unreal.

And guess what? They're better than 95% of all shooters that have been released to the market since the 2000s.

this guy knows what's up! prodeus, ion maiden, project warlock are all amazing! havnt played the others though. will check them out since you obviously have great taste! thanks!

Bloodstained was the best castlevania since symphony of the night. Idk if that counts because it's by the same creator, but Konami sucks ass and wouldn't do any thing so he went and did it himself, which is awesome.

Theme hospital → Two Point Hospital, Project Hospital
Sim City 2000 → TheoTown
Theme Park → Parkitect, Planet coaster

Whatever games have been released as homages to the original Dungeon Keeper.

So far i can't say they come close to it's perfection. This game was really a "lighting in a bottle" example.

~15 years of private vanilla (etc.) WoW servers, since Blizzard wouldn't do it themselves, and they're still better in many ways than WoW Classic.

The Left for Dead clones such as World War Z or Back for Blood because we will never get Left for Dead 3. Wasn't made by fans but were made to fill that void.
