Iggy Azalea: Why Didn't Eminem get the same backlash from the Grammys?

Because he was good at rapping and was pushed by Dre.

Iggy isnt good at rapping and pushed by T.I.

An top of that some sexism.

Not today Satan.

You can't respond to that with "Not today Satan." and post another pile of shit.

I like her songs *shrug* so what if she doesn't have the authentic background or whatever, her music is good and that's what matters.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Your hip hop aoty 2014 bombed commercially and didnt even break 80 on MC. FOH

The quality of the album is not made by sales. Most of the good shit is not mainstream but what would you know about that?

You should be smart enough to know that popular opinion isn't much of an argument on the quality of a creative work.
But where are the lies here?

Can we stop bringing this up? She apologized for that iirc. I don't know what else you guys want her to do. Nobody's perfect, especially someone who doesn't know the intricacies of race/class in the U.S.

Meanwhile eminem STAYS saying homophobic and misogynistic shit on his recent album.
It's just the culture. Iggy can't help herself. I'm sure if she did country or pop, she wouldn't be this racist.

Off the top of my head, RTJ2 and Pinata are better. Sit your five dollar ass down. The album is outclassed commercially and critically by other albums in 2014 so it doesnt deserve hip hop aoty 2014. If you think I'm mainstream fixated you've clearly never seen me post about music.

Have I said anything negative about those albums tho? Take some chai tea and calm down.

As I said in the other thread.

Vast majority of Iggy fans aren't fans of the genre, they're the kind of people who go "I hate rap...Iggy is the only good artist" (sometimes they like to say things like being fans of the golden age, while they have another tab open looking up the most popular songs and lyrics of said songs of the 90s).

Vast majority of fans of the genre don't like Iggy because they think she's wack as fuck on all fronts.

Everyone likes comparing Iggy to Eminem and that's just dumb and not fair to Em. Outside of their skin color they're nothing alike. One is talented as fuck the other is not.

With that stated, notice how Iggy and Nicki rap about the same things, one is demonized for it the other is loved for it. Iggy talks about her ass and how she's the baddest bitch mainstream media love it. Nicki talks about her ass and how she's the baddest bitch. Mainstream wants her to be a role model for the black community.

FOH.

I said this in the grammys thread. Eminem actively puts homophobic and misogynistic language in his songs and says he's allowed because that's his ~thing~ but noooo as long as Iffy doesn't win the tumblr tweens are happy.

You must of missed 1999>curtain call. He regularly got shit for that and still does.

His albums and songs still sell a lot and continue to win awards without significant backlash. The GP definitely doesn't harbor as much hate for him as they do for Oggy.

Drake is the male Katy Perry of hip hop. Basic.
I fucks with "If Youre Reading This Its Too Late". And the dude's talent with the hook game cant even be overstated, some of his singles stand out as legitimately good pieces of music. So what if he doesnt come with complex bars and intricate rhyme patterns. I dont need that from every MC in the game. And frankly, I like that the guy doesnt come across as a self righteous ass in his music, unlike say some of his industry peers.

The igloo needs to realize that she's in the same lane as Pitbull and Flo Rida. Pop rap gets no respect. A lot of hip hop fans HATED Nicki during the Roman Reloaded era for that reason.

Autotune, man. It needs to die. Every one of his songs sounds the same because of his nasal voice. Some of the beats are really good, but then he starts rapping and I have to turn it off.

Well said.

Most of the shit she's tweeted would be classified as racist/homophobic in Australia too.

She has always been a joke but now shes just a sad joke. What is really really sad however is how few people actually take the time to acknowledge how sad of a joke she is, she can't be serious.

Ooh shit I don't keep up with Grammy's or none of that shit but I would've never guess she was nominated for best rap album. If someone would've told me that yesterday I would've laughed and said "good one". She's a doodoo rapper, she has some nice songs I guess but nothing I'd put on my iPod or anything

I personally don't like her music, but I have to admit that yes, if she's really as good as people think she is, she deserves her nod.

I also am not a fan of her personality, but that should have nothing to do with her music AND Eminem himself has a shitty personality, a rapper I do in fact like quite a bit.

That's pretty much exactly it. It's "acceptable" for Minaj to do her thing because "ain't that little black girl cute?" But we don't want our precious white daughters doing that!

She's an embarrassment, she's not anywhere near his level, especially when he broke through at the beginning. Just a stupid comparison from a stupid artist.

Em got backlash. Twitter/social media just wasn't a thing back when he was coming up. You'd better believe certain people resented a white rapper winning an award over well-respected black artists, they just didn't have the open channel to express it back then. People hated on Macklemore when he took the win over Kendrick, like it was his fault he won or something.

Some of the criticism Iggy gets is valid. Everything about her is manufactured, forced. She's really boring live. She's not very bright to compare herself to Em. But she certainly gets way too much hate for being a white female.

But she certainly gets way too much hate for being a white female.

She's not a fucking victim, her gimmick got her money and fame she wouldnt have had doing electro pop. "Way too much hate"? From a vocal, small minority? She got nominated for a grammy and her shit got a ton of radio play. She hasnt been attacked by the mainstream press. She hasnt been fucked over financially. She's reaped the rewards of being a white female rapper.

While is true that being a white female rapper amplifies the hate she gets you can't deny that at the end of the day people hate her because even with all of the above she expects the respect of her peers because she is a white female and not because her talent.

Iggy fans strike me as the type who also believe that Macklemore is the only rapper with something to say.

Yeah, theyre people who dont fuck with hip hop outside of a random Eminem album or a couple radio singles. Yet they feel qualified to weigh in on the state of the genre.

She's not a fucking victim, her gimmick got her money and fame she wouldnt have had doing electro pop.

I don't think she's a victim, either. And yeah, there's only so much sympathizing you can do with a person who's still taking home millions upon millions of dollars for what she does.

But I think it's pretty obvious at this point that a lot of the hate she gets is amplified because she's a woman. I mean, when Pitbull and Flo-rida were polluting the airwaves with that rancid Dance Pop shit they tried to call Hip-Hop, the worst they got was people trashing them for their shitty songs and, in Pitbull's case, selling out. But nobody accused them of literally killing Hip-Hop like what Iggy gets. And really, I'd say that she's no worse (or any more "manufactured") than those two.

And let's not pretend that Hip-Hop and the Hip-Hop community doesn't have a general problem accepting female MCs. Even the good ones.

We did question why Eminem won the award, but not for those reasons. It was unanimous that it was a bad album. But for him it's not culture appropriation. He's lived it. Unless everything we've seen about his life is a lie. He's opened up about his life in his songs, about his girlfriend, his daughter, and his spats with his mom and even the legal system back in his early days. All of that went in on the wax. He's an open book.

Iggy has done none of that. That could be a marketing decision that radio hits should be the name of the game with the debut album. I can't blame her because she had songs go no. 1 on the billboards. Her singles have probably been downloaded over a million times. Great job. But the persona you put out when you are not behind the mic is very snobbish and holier than thou. At times, fake and others full of faux outrage. Most of all, you think you are better than the culture you are currently in.

I haven't heard any female UK (grime) rappers being called out from disrespect. The one that sticks out is Lady Sovereign when she was active. There was no buzz about disrespect nor culture appropriating hip hop

Em got alot of she for being white and on top of HipHop for a while, but the fact that he's actually a great at what he does negates most of the bullshit crits, and he's mostly respected in the HH community.

But Iggy's work just haven't been that good, yes its tough for women to get love in HH at all levels, and Im positive alot of the hate she gets are sex n race based but musically, her work's been mostly trash and the fact that the mainstream powers that be are trying to "legitimize" her made the backlash even worst.

WHAT?! She went after Q-Tip for educating her?

I love hip hop and I still learned new things from his history lesson. I appreciated a little bit more context around the genre.

Ridiculous. She has contempt for the entire culture and yet still makes bank on it. Despicable.

Actually for him it is cultural appropriation since he has never been black. He is a culture appropriating, misogynist, homophobic white man. Whether he is good or not does not change that fact.

I think the point n00bsauce was making is that he grew up in a majority black neighborhood. How can he appropriate a culture if he has truly lived it? Is skin color really that large of a qualifier?

I offered a reason why it's not cultural appropriating. He maybe be misogynist and homophobic (like a lot of rappers today unfortunately) but being cultural appropriating doesn't necessarily stop at skin pigmentation; contrary to popular belief but it's true.

I'd argue Riff Raff would be more of an example of that. You have MGK, Yelawolf, Asher Roth, Lady Sovereign, Macklemore (I think he's corny, but he has done a lot of work and is a legitimate rapper that the hip hop community doesn't deny) and Beastie Boys (GOAT group). Yes you can be white and a rapper and a good to great rapper. Just saying because one is white, therefore cultural appropriation is a cop out reason. There's no explanation behind it.

The best example of cultural appropriation I could probably use is Keith Urban, an Australian who is doing american country like a pro. But as it turns out, he's been doing country music in Australia back in the 80s and continued to do so when he moved to Tennessee in the 90s. That has been his life. So it's not really cultural appropriation.

EDIT: Iggy Azalea - Runaway Slave Master (Video) It's nitpicking, but either her or her ghostwriter is aware of the politics surrounding her when that wrote that line.
