IGN blown away by POP The Two Thrones

"Everything we saw in Two Thrones impressed us. Ubisoft has omitted all the trashy metal and poor voice of Warrior Within and put the series back on its beautiful track. The open sprawl of Babylon transitions nicely into cavernous interiors and posh Persian halls. The narrative is also exciting and the new gameplay devices that accentuate the established platforming -- as opposed to a more obtuse combat system that starkly contrasts it -- has us very happy. And with more diverse bosses, scripted on-rails segments and multiple puzzles, Two Thrones definitely looks like the action platformer devout fans of Sands of Time have been waiting for. It's the one we're all about anyway.

You can check out a new trailer and a new video interview by navigating the below links, but stay with us. Later this week we'll return with more video interview chunks and new features on how the art and music are changing."

IGN gave PoP:WW 8.7. I can't believe they are trying to act like the series went off the rails with that one...

Even if they gave TSoT 9.6, 8.7 is still a high rating. They sure love overrating this series...

indeed. in some ways it was even better than SOT, but the overall experience felt a little too dark at the end of the day. this is why POP3 will own both. a mix of both will only make it better.

I liked PoP: WW but I loved Pop: SoT due to the intangibles, even still, WW did a lot of things better than SoT. In fact, it did everything better except the Prince and the music.

This new game sounds like the best of both of those. I am really looking forward to it in a big way now.

Uh... I'm pretty sure the IGN rating scale only runs from 8.0 (awful trash) to 9.9 (flawless). This doesn't seem that strange to me.

All signs point to another 'dark' episode. Heck, the prince can't stand himself that he goes with dual personalities this time in the fight for this throne.

I will wait for reviews and in depth impressions before I consider buying it. As some mentioned above, WW wasn't that awful, but it was insanely aggravating and an incredible disappointment considering it was the sequel to TSoT.

Haha, are you serious? I haven't seen it, but I'll watch it now. I guess Ubisoft sees people as 1 of two types: badass woman abusers or spineless whiners.

yeah it had. i've never played a console game with so much bugs to be honest. they did release a xbox live patch during the summer so it should work ok by now (if you play it on xbox that is).

Once again proving my theory that people who post on the Gaming-Age Forums are "too good" to read gaming Web sites.
The Prince never screams "bitch" and there is no inappropriately rocking music. The developers, you see, are retrieving Sands of Time's wonder that Warrior Within lost. While that game focused largely on the self-centered exploits of a brooding gymnast, Sands of Time was plainly classic. Warrior Within's Prince wanted little more than personal salvation, but Sands of Time's tried on several occasions to sacrifice himself for others. Now we're back to that. Now the Prince is once again fighting to save his city, his family, his people, and his kidnapped love. He's the hero and not some random jerk.
Again, I'm not sold on The Two Thrones yet, but opinions only matter when they're informed opinions.

Hey, if I'm wrong, blame UbiSoft's media releases that do nothing but portray the prince as a dark brooding psychotic son of a bitch that lives to run wall to wall in his quest to behead his next victim.

But as I said before, in case you missed it, I'll wait for in-depth reviews and impressions before I buy it. I loved the first and hated the second part so much that it left a long lasting sour taste. Not my fault for being apprehensive.

The opening part of the "Babylon" one made my head hurt, and I'm afraid to watch any of the others. I mean, the gameplay looks good, and hey, a whip! It's just...

"But my only welcome....was fire and arrows."

I loved the first game, but seeing the dramatic changes in "mood" to Warrior Within made me wonder whether I really wanted to keep up with the series (I haven't played WW yet, and currently am not able to).

For me it appeared they were bad. One was audio related. I hated the crappy music, so I turned it down - the voice overs WENT DOWN WITH IT!!!

WTF?

There is no online play in WW right? So they actually released a patch for WW to handle the shitty SP bugs?

This is really true?

You bitch!!!

Argggggggg!

Some of the shittiest voice acting ever in that game, and I only played it for a very short period of time.

The XBox version was nigh unplayable due to bugs, glitches, crashes, even sound errors. I finished it this summer, but never checked the XBL option. I assumed it was some stupid time trial 'arena fight' thing as promoted on the box. Shit, I coulda saved so many headaches if there really was a patch.

i think warrior within is a significantly superior game to sands of time. Sands of time had a better storyline/dialogue, and if you hate metal music than Warrior that could be annoying (just turn it off). But everything else was superior, the enemies are no longer seperated from the gaming enviroment. The combat is much faster, has a much deeper combo system, uses the enviroment with ledges and walls much more of a factor, adds double handed combat, the enemies are smarter, greater in variety, and some good boss battles. The graphics are much better, the enviroment stunning at times, and adds the great chase sequences with the main enemy.

The game is much longer, much more difficult. The first POP game is good but its problems are so glaring that I believe its the most overated game ive played this generation. It gets 93% ranking from gamerankings despite the boring combat, horrible enemy graphics and variation. I hated being taken from the game enviroment to a combat setting that seperates the two experiences of platforming and fighting. The game was very short because it was so easy, the controls were almost too good and made all of the platforming a breeze. Warrior within is much more challenging in its level design and consequently much more satisfying. It also has lots of secrets that are cleverly hidden. I really think the story/atmosphere is way overplayed by the press, yeah its really good and special but I dont play games for story.

Some of those bugs were so bad that you had to start the game from the beginning again. I know a couple of people that ran into those bugs and they basically had to follow a walkthru just so they don't run into it again.

There was lots of fatal bugs (read can't finish game) bugs in the PC version

from the POP official technical board

And here's what I orginally sent to ubisoft-

I'm reporting a Major bug in this game,
at the end just before you enter the portal, the one you push kaileena through, well after you pussh her in, you cannot enter the portal yaself.
it's actually unknow whats causing the bug, some think it might the skill levels others think it's the savepoints near the portal, so far only ppl playing on hard can see the second ending, I'm not sure if this bug occurs when you have the Scorpian sword. Most seem to say it happens when they have the water sword,
many cannot see the 2nd ending and fight the Dahaka.
is tech support aware of this bug?
thanks for ya time.

here's what I recived-

Response (Uk technical support) - 12/15/2004 12:15 PM
Hi Grass,
we are aware of this problem and as far as we are aware the situation can be avoided by the following
1- Only ever save the game AFTER going through a time portal and not before
2- Make double sure all the buttons are depressed next to the time portals even if the portal is active.
3- Never save the game while there is dialogue being recieved.
If you are stuck at the end portal, you should reload your most recent save in the past, and play through following these guidlines. I hope this works for you. let us know if it does not. Merry Christmas.

PoP:WW rocked hard, one of the best games of last year. Looking forward to this one, but I dunno about that dark Prince... We'll see, hope it's good.

let's see:

empty angst: check
"dark" artwork: check
cheesy soundtrack: check
blood and gore: check
raving IGN reviews: check

All I need is a goatee, FHM article, or mountain dew endorsement and I'll have Video Game: Extremely pandering make-over bingo!!

Not at all. I loved it. The music and such was lame at times but the platforming and atmosphere was still top notch. The combos were sweet too.
I even liked it after getting hit with a game ending bug, which happened about 5 minutes before the final boss fight, making me have to comletely restart the game over. Still loved it. Actually I liked it better the second time cause I found all the healthy upgrades and that makes the game so much easier. They were hidden very well. Made me feel like a champ for finding them.

Two Thrones sit atop my wanted games lists for Christmas right now. Can't wait.

Wow. Any news on a Xbox360 version of this during the launch window?

Hmmm...track record of the current-gen PoP games: 1 excellent, 1 bugfest PoS.

I guess I'll give it a shot. Hopefully there's a demo out beforehand.

I sure am not going to trust IGN. Out of hope and desperation after the Zelda bump, I let those morons convince me that Battalion Wars didn't suck. But it did. I guess I needed the reminder that IGN is only good for videos and mockery.

A great game indeed...

Can't wait for TTT

Are all of them from the same team or did they space them out at UBIsoft Montreal sort of like how Splinter Cell was spaced out between 2 teams?

wow so many pop2 fans. where have you all been? i've been fighting this war against GAF all by myself :(

I just finished playing it last month. Sorry I wasn't here for you earlier.
(it's not quite as good as Advent Rising though :D)

Warrior Within was a pretty bad game. I can't believe people defend it. Even if you don't mind the progression stopping bugs and audio/graphic glitches that appear throughout the game from beginning to end, the game was just a excercise in backtracking. Get to the end of an area, backtrack through that same area to get to the hub, rinse and repeat. Eventually return to the same area to get chased by the time dude, and then later backtrack through ALL the areas yet again in a "brilliant" plot twist. You go through the same traps so many times that it just gets boring eventually.

Audio and atmosphere sucked too, which is why IGN made it clear that this seems to have changed. Hopefully it did. Platforming was still good in POP2, and it looks like it will only get better with that grapple chain and new moves he can perform on the walls
