IGN gives Switch 2 a 7.0

Switch 2 is everything everyone asked for, the power delivered is even a little better than the most optimistic scenarios in some cases, the games announced for this year seem very much GOTY contenders, I don't know what else would someone ask it to do, the fucking dishes?

The launch lineup is trash but it's a huge upgrade, makes the original feels like a toy. I'll never be massive on Nintendo but it seems like it's exactly what it needed to be. They managed to avoid adding any dumb gimmicks or change for the sake of change.

7 is reasonable. No OLED is silly no matter how anyone spins it, poor battery life, one game, stupid game card key nonsense. More games will come soon thankfully, and they'll most likely be great.

Is it controversial though? I think 7 is a perfect score for the Switch 2. It's just a Switch 1 with modern specs and that means it inherits basically all of the positives while also fixing some of the negatives.

BUT it has a mediocre launch lineup and it's not exactly exciting. Once the novelty wears off it's just another Switch. A score of 7 is by no means a bad score.

I'm gonna elaborate on the launch lineup comment because I bet people will have issues with it.

27 games
  • Mario Kart World
  • Two ports of previous Zelda games. One of which is 3 years old and the other 8 years old. Great to see them at 1440/60 but they are the same games we played on Switch.
  • 3 shitty ports of GameCube games from 20 years ago.
  • 1 new JRPG, 1 remaster of a JRPG from the 3DS, and a collection of old JRPGs that were on other platforms for months.
  • 6 month old Sonic game
  • 5 or more ports of games that were on other platforms a couple months prior
  • 5 ports of games that are anywhere from 1-3 years old and are on every other platform.
  • A couple indie games
  • 33 year old racing game port
  • $10 manual
It's still a good console and I still bought one day 1 (midnight release) because I know I'm gonna get good exclusive titles.

I give this post a 3 / 10 . Same tired postplay. nothing new.

I mean, it is just a switch. Even the menus are basically the same. But it is sensational to play on. So much more comfortable to hold. Much better screen. Great performance and low load times. It's what the Switch should always have been. And now it is, and I find myself using it waaaaay more than the original Switch. I just so much better in every way.

Rating a console just seems kind of stupid unless there's some glaring flaw, which there isn't. It's all about the games, and naturally there won't be the biggest library at launch.

First I've seen it. Doesn't make any fucken sense.
They gave the PS5 an (8/10)
it's not new and is common practice for media outlets that cover multiple platforms.
Given their previous reviews....this score seems about right if not generous.

Majority reviewer's complain is "it's too similar to original Switch" which you could say the same about PS4 to PS5 and XBX to XBSX…..same type of system just with better graphics….but in comparison the difference between Switch 1 and Switch 2 is bigger than between PS4 and PS5 in terms of power.

Personally I already seeing potential thank to games like DK Bananza and I can't wait what Monolith Soft does with the system.

Reviewing hardware that is out for what, 2 weeks? How is that of any help to anyone, boggles the mind.
How long do you propose they wait to review the product that is available now to consumers? Should products get annual reviews as the devices are updated?

The people that are considering buying a product today have the right to know what that experience is like now.

A console doesn't have to be built for the future, the moment any piece of technology leaves a best buy it atomically becomes outdated, and #2 Nintendo's games can go head to head with anyone, Zelda is always impressive, there's the Marios, Smash Bros etc.

A rare fair take from IGN. The console is a fine upgrade, if a little uninspired and safe. I'm surprised they also didn't put more effort into ergonomics of the Joycons after all these years. Always found the flatness to be really uncomfortable to use, never mind the use of non hall effect sticks, again. Which is a lost opputunity from Nintendo. I'd sacrifice some space savings for some proper grips and a bigger battery for more performance on-the-go and battery life.
The flat ergonomics are certainly intentional. But I think it would be fair to include optional joycon grips for those who prefer comfort over the slimmest possible form (which is probably most people tbh).

I'm sure they can figure a way to make it at least a little more ergonomic and fit for human hands. And still be able to use as solo Joy-Cons and with separate accessories. Just feels a little lazy in design tbh.

An optional SKU may be be a good idea though I'd just want standard experience to have at least to have that.

Seems like an accurate review. The system isn't some kind of disaster, but it doesn't have a single killef app at launch, its feature set isn't much to write home about, and it's nor a tremendous value proposition for a console.

As others have said, Nintendo lives or dies by its games. Right now, there really aren't any. Mario Kart World brings precious little to the table. And that paid tour? Ooof. But Donkey Kong Bananza is coming next month and more titles are in the pipeline. Over time, the Switch 2 will become more attractive as time goes on. But in typical Nintendo fashion, better versions of Switch 2 will release as well. It's an upgrade better put off IMO.

I've been playing consoles for >35 years

Never an hardware review actually crossed my mind to see if I wanted a console

A switch without Nintendo games has 0 value

The mouse controls have to be the most backwards and bizarre hardware decision Nintendo has ever made, and that's really saying something. 99% of Switch usage is on-the-go or on-a-couch, neither of which are at all conducive, or work at all, with mouse controls.

NVC - Nintendo Voice Chat is their most popular platform specific podcast.
They def care about Nintendo, it drives traffic, traffic brings money, they like money.

Whats weird is that Unlocked(their Xbox podcast) has become more popular than Beyond(Playstation podcast) in the current generation.
Playstation not announcing enough stuff??

NVC is great, best personalities of their podcasts and fun energy. Surprised about the success of Unlocked, though I guess there is a lot of speculation and attention directed toward Microsoft lately, along with very little happening on Playstation.

Couldn't have said it better myself, it's a good console with an extremely underwhelming launch in terms of new content.

Leana Hafer a Trans Woman at IGN gave Dragon Age: The Failguard a 9.0!!!

IGN is biased and a f****** Joke!
Funny how the most offended users have a Mario related profile pic.
I mean going through the editor past rating history and sexual identification as an attempt to discredit is wild.
It's not sane to require so much validation about what you like, there's no better indicator that you're not that confident about it.

Personally I find Switch 2 pretty boring as a console.
Nintendo was always bringing novelty change to their console.
Thumbstick, Detached screen, motion control....
This one is basically an updated Switch 1 with a mouse option... not much novelty there.
There will be amazing games for sure but as a console it's pretty meh.

I love mine and would probably give it an 8, but I pretty much only play docked

I've heard that there are issues with the battery. If that's true, and I was one who primarily played in handheld, a 7 sounds fair

It's a very well-made console that just looks and feels great, but it also has a price tag that correlates, so nothing too insane there

Edit: the games is why I bought it. I've played nothing but mkw since the switch 2 came out
