IGN Killer 7 review

Sam Houser fucked my wife
Here.

I expect that Killer 7 is going to be one of the most debated games of the year. I'm well aware that some people hate the title, just as others love it. Capcom has clearly emphasized story and style over good old-fashioned control mechanics and that is unequivocally the adventure's biggest problem. The control setup, which lacks true freedom, feels like an archaic step backward when compared to today's more traditional games. And yet, at the same time it's not an adventure-ruining choice for me, in the same way that the point-and-click mechanics of Myst didn't ruin that experience. Control remains very functional. It's just radically different.

Players who can look beyond the control mechanics will find a truly bold and intriguing adventure game lurking within Killer 7's beautiful cel-shaded visuals. This is a game that oozes style from beginning to end and also one with a story so brutally off-the-wall that it practically demands your attention. It's also a game that offers big rewards in the vein of gorgeous and lengthy cut-scenes for players who keep at it.

It is, however, not a game for younger players or for anybody who is generally uninterested in story or puzzle-solving-driven scenarios. Killer 7's adult themes, which encapsulate extremely violent, profane and sexual situations, as well as a wide range of issues from terrorism to the sale of children, make the M on the box really mean something.

Recommended.

9.5 Presentation
Exceptional. Stylized graphics complement a truly bizarre storyline driven by supeb anime-style cut-scenes.
8.0 Graphics
The style is beautiful. The levels are varied in design, each more crazy than the next. Some stiff character animation. Runs at a solid framerate throughout. No progressive scan or widescreen modes.
8.0 Sound
Overall great voice acting and moody music. The only downside is that the one-liners are repeated often during critical hits.
7.0 Gameplay
Radically different control setup is sure to frustrate some gamers. Players who can look beyond it will find a fun adventure with exploration, puzzle-solving, first-person shooting and more.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
At about 15 hours, Killer 7 features a sizeable single-player mode. Gamers can replay on different difficulties for varying challenge and unlockables.
8.1 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Hm.

IGN is useless. I patiently await the Gamespot review, but it's kinda good to know that at least someone was able to enjoy it.

Have you already forgotten their obvious GameCube bias?

That's a joke.

*Shrugs* I love the game, too. Matt's not alone.

Did you review it in EGM? Or maybe I'm thinking Coded Arms.

Edit: er... wrong mark.

Gamepro gave this game a 1.5.

Gamepro

Usually everything out of Gamepro is 3.5 or higher so when they dip below the 3.0 mark I take notice. Having said that, I too will probably pick this game up for PS2 when it hits 20 bucks. Looks intriguing. But not ready to drop 50 bucks this game which seems more like an art project.

I'm not sure what to expect from Gamespot. If it were GC exclusive it would have gotten a 6.5 but since it's also on the PS2 now, maybe a 7.6?

if anything gamespot has rated gamecube games high.

why would it rate high just cause it's on ps2?

dont ask me, some of the highest gamespot scores are from GC games. Prime = 9.7 and RE4 = 9.6

btw wario, you'll love K7.

Yeah, but they all pale in comparison to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 PS2, which got a 10

PS2 version scored lower?
The load times are significantly worse on PS2, PS2 has some framerate problems (in weird spots, too) and the overall experience feels quite a bit choppier because of it.

Before some of you go on the IGN hate, I hope you realize that the press average thus far is 8.0. IGN gave it an 8.1, my god they overrate?!!?!

It's all right, I'm getting the GameCube version anyway. Capcom 5 for life!

this forum has been really stupid lately. hating everything (but your sony/ms/nintendo camp) seems to be the 'in' thing right now

is PS2 loading really that bad? are there any comparison load times?

i guess i'll just rent the GC version if it's pretty bad

From the sounds of his description I think I will enjoy this very much.

+1 sale, but I might wait till the end of the year to pick it up for a bit cheaper.

I like Killer 7, but it's really just not worth full price. I'll be the first person to pick it up when it hits $30. And yes, the PS2 loading times are pretty damn bad.

Bargain bin pickup for me. I'm glad it isn't total garbage according to IGN, but I might just rent it to make that determination for myself.

I am definitely going to check this out regardless of scores. Looks interesting.

I'd be really, really surprised if it gets 7.0 or higher from Gamespot, though. 6.4 if I had to guess. Gamespot doesn't often give points for raw innovation.

all i can say is wtf to this game. i just watched some movies and wtf is this game about? watch the movies at ign and you'll say the same thing.

Would you say IGN's useless if they gave it a very low score?
Nope. IGN is useless, regardless of the score. I just don't take any conclusions if only a single instance like IGN rates the game. I always check out different instances like Gamespot and IGN. And maybe some more to be sure.

Well, when I saw the trailer I was totally blown away. It was so scary and awesome. So much blood and gore. Yummo. :)

It's an experience that's hard to put into words, it needs to be played.
