IGN Posts BF4 Comparison Video

A little more? Starting from scratch, how much would you need to run BF4 at 60fps ultra/max settings? Throw out monitor/keyboard/mouse (to be fair since we're not factoring in the cost of a TV)

- motherboard
- cpu
- ram
- hdd
- gpu
- fans
- case

How much would that cost? I think you're looking at at least double the price of a PS4. If I'm wrong please let me know (so that I can re-evaluate my own position on gaming rigs!)

I just built my buddy a PC that cost him $597.90 total (didn't charge to build) and it runs BF4 with all the bells and whistles on ultra (WITH only 2xAA + FXAA) fairly smoothly. He used a copy of Win7 he had from a PC in his house (we just used that CD key) and he already had a mouse/keyboard. He used the HDMI cable from his 360 and hooked it up to his plasma.

Take advantage of sales and rebates.

PS4/XB1 are sold with (great) controlers so if you want to be fair you need to add the cost for input (either high-end controler or good mouse/keyboard combo)

Do you have the specs handy? I'm curious to compare benchmarks/prices.

you have a 570 GTX or you are saying if you bought a 570GTX? If you have one, yeah... it will give you roughly the performance of PS4. At that point all a PS4 would give you are (console) exclusives.

If you are talking about after BUYING a 570 GTX, IMHO, for $100 more you would get roughly the same performance on a PS4 PLUS all of the (console) exclusives.

No, I already have a 570 GTX. I was saying I'm wresting with the idea of selling my launch PS4 and getting a new GPU for my PC and just waiting a year or more for the PS4. I doubt I'll do it, though.

I just have doubts that we will see as big of a leap in visuals as most are used to throughout a console lifespan. Usually that happens because the architecture is so vastly different. These boxes being closer to PCs makes me wonder if the same quality jump will even transpire.

All that said though, games like BF4 aren't why I buy consoles in the first place. I have no doubt that the first party stuff will be fantastic on PS4, I just don't know if I need one at launch or not.

Thanks! I've been out of the PC world for awhile which is why I was asking. May consider a new rig sometime this year to compliment my console setup.

I am not saying that it isn't possible to build a $600 system that will run BF4 on Ultra, but I would say that if you do it a gtx 660 isn't the way to go. Radeon 7950's have been on sale like crazy recently and those would be a better choice.

you'd think that the sort of person with 30,000 posts on a video game message board - 50 in the last 24 hours discussing a modest resolution disparity - would see the benefit in a spending a little more upfront on a gaming desktop.
Let me explain this to you clearly. I was a big PC gamer and then I got tired of the concept. One of the things I can be sure of with a console is that until they stop making games for that console, my system will perform exactly the same as every other system(hardware failures not included). With PCs that is not the case. I upgraded video cards and then when generational hardware changes occurred I would update my motherboard, power supply...

Now I aim for simplicity in my life. I use my macbook pro as my main computer and I can grab it and go whenever I need to. I used to own android phones but I switched to iPhones because of the "it just works" approach that Apple has to mobile devices(also the ecosystem). Similarly, I value the console ecosystem and the "it just works" approach is what I want. I don't want to fumble with drivers or hardware upgrades.

For a little background, I am an embedded computer engineer working on my PhD in safety critical systems. I work with complex systems all the time. However, I prefer my personal life to be devoid of complexity if possible. It's not that I don't know about PC gaming. I am not ignorant to the advantages. However, it is not what I want in my life. I prefer the simplicity of console gaming.

Hopefully this gives you some insight into my approach. It's not about the money at all. I could easily drop the money on a PC. I understand the advantages of PC gaming.

P.S.
I still hoard games on STEAM. I can't pass up a good deal. Every now and then I will load up something on my MBP.

umm.. really?

I suppose. If "good enough" was the PS3 owner mantra on multi-plats for the first half of this gen or so, no reason it can't be the mantra for XBONE owners for all of the next-gen.

"Good enough" is fine by me, as long as I get reasonable upgraded graphics over the next gen, and if they do really get terribly noticeable, I will just pick it up on the PS4, but unfortunately they need a few more exclusives, that aren't b-tier IMO in order for me to purchase one. The Order looks great, but I am skeptical due to the face they have mainly done game for the PSP or whatever. I mainly will decide to buy a system if it has around 6 exclusives I want.

Im all for the PS4, and love everything about it including Sony's attitude etc, but if this represents the general difference we will see between the two consoles I dont think the gap is that big of deal at all. Its been way over hyped.

Yes, let's draw final conclusions about power differences from third party launches titles. Seems reasonable.

It's very likely that you can turn off AA in the PS4 version, so no more blur:

I'd love to know if this were the case. I play BF3 with both aa all the way off on pc->plasma and it looks great. Yes there is aliasing, but it's not that bad.

So one of the DICE guys said that the Xbox One version didn't have ambient occlusion at the time when all of this footage was recorded. What is ambient occlusion? Will it improve things? Make it worse?

So, looks pretty good. Plus, we got that missing AO (plus whatever else they are tweaking) to look forward to. I feel good about it.

Well...wow. Oh well, we knew there would/should be a difference considering the hardware. Definitely is, so so much for the wishful thinking in that department.

That being said, the good news is, as I've told people for a while, that regardless of which platform has the "better" versions of the software, BOTH will still be a leap ahead of today's generation and will be fun to play. I think it was smart of Dice to do things like reduce the resolution rather than being stubborn and sticking with it to the detriment of the game- making it halt and stutter, etc.

Just as an aside, am I the only one noticing a good amount of pop in on the XB1 version videos? Not casting stones here...I've never seen that as a "big deal" unless it was just rampant and it's not here. Just curious if anyone noticed that.

Just a few more weeks people, and we'll all get to play these consoles and get exposed to another big jump in console graphics and technology. I can hardly wait!

I can't remember the last time I had to mess around with drivers or windows updates or game updates, all I can tell you its been years. You can automate all of that stuff and if you have a fairly modern PC that you don't fill up it with garbage software it should work fine most of the time. I'm not sure when you quit the PC gaming world, but maintaining a system software-wise has become extremely simple these days if you want it to be.

As for the hardware side of things, just buy a good quality computer and over spec it so it lasts a many years. I upgraded my PC 2 years ago from a PC I used for gaming for close to 5 years and the only things I added were more RAM and hard drives.

I'm not trying to convince you PC is the way to go, as you stated you like consoles for their ease of use and maintenance. That being said, while some people certainly do have issues with PCs its never been easier to be a PC gamer and if you have been gone for a long time its a much easier world to deal with these days than say 4 to 5 years ago. I play games on both PC and consoles* and both have their strengths and weakness, but for the minor graphics settings tinkering I have to do its more than worth it for me.

* XBone preorder still hasn't been cancelled.

Missing AO is but one thing. There's still DoF, motion blur, other post processing, AA etc. The question is, at what cost do Xbox One owners get AO? Will the performance stay the same or will there be a further hit to performance? AO is pretty costly.

My friends and I have been playing the 360 version and it is solid for what it is.. but looking at that IGN Xbox One video.. it looks so much better that that leap alone will satisfy us. Looks great to me.. both next gen systems do.

Not going to run BF4 1080p all ultra on multiplayer with 60fps without at least a 280x or 770 which are $300+ alone, and that comes with a lot of dips on 64 player maps. Cutting costs to the bone with an all new build will still not net you console level performance at $400.

AO simply helps with the depth perception thanks to shadows placed in important places to give an image depth.

You don't need all ultra to look much better than the next gen consoles. A single 670 is enough for all settings at high with 2xMSAA at 1080p. I have two 670s and for the sake of knowing, I disabled sli to test my single 670 and the results were very good. I also have W8 which does make a difference. The 660 is more than capable of running BF4 at 1080p with high settings and AA. So honestly you don't have to spend much on a PC to out perform the ps4.

Really? My gaming laptop from last year that cost me $1800 can't do that. (7970m, 16GB RAM, i7 processor)

It's already been mentioned by other sites but PS4 BF4 looks like it's running on basically high settings, so running at high doesn't seem to look noticeably better than the PS4 version, except the resolution difference. Many cards can run BF4 in 1080p at playable framerates (~30fps) but we're talking about 60fps here.

LevelCap released a review of the PS4 version.
A few highlights:
-Says that there is a lot of parity between PC and PS4 version
-Graphics look great and PS4 may be better option for people with low end PCs
-As far as XO vs PS4 version, he says there are differences, but to him, they are fairly negligible

He has never been technical when it comes to hardware. Not a knock on him, I have seen his Battlefield related content before and is quite popular.

good review. Glad I'm waiting for the PS4 version instead of PC. I wasn't impressed with the beta on PC, it just seemed like BF 3.1, so I think playing it on console will be more fun.
