IGN: PS5 is outselling Xbox Series X/S 5:1

Funny that IGN has been the one of the few outlets that has clinged to the console war narrative this gen when most others don't even bother talking about it.
This is Ziff Davis we’re talking about, so I’m sure this article exists solely for massaging public for something unpopular among Xbox crowd. Like Starfield reveal for PS5.

Even Nintendo came back from the dead from the Gamecube and the Wii U and they're not nearly a quarter as rich as Microsoft as a whole. We will just hope and pray that the next Xbox is worth a damn to keep Sony on their toes.

But Nintendo found a niche and bet everything on hit (portable => portable hybrid, but still portable). In this case, MS should found its niche... problem is, MS does not know how to find a market.

Not after resorting to putting Mario and Zelda on PlayStation.
Fair point. Truth be told, I'll never buy an Xbox again, unless there's a mega sale or something as I got my series S for $150, which I will use for BC. But it's difficult to bring myself to buy a PlayStation either. PC is my home along with a Switch.

How do they come to the 5:1 sales ratio? Based on last year's numbers?

edit: read more of the thread, i see its based on 2024 numbers. Brutal!

People are saying we already knew this, but I didn't - or at least, I didn't realize the ratio was 5 to 1. That's assuming IGN is playing fair with the numbers (I didn't watch the video).

edit: I skimmed to the part where they talked about sales, which is around 9:20. It seems fishy to me. He refers to a Sony financial report in which Sony announced 65 m PS5 consoles sold, and he then compares that to Xbox's 29.7 m.. Then, in the very next sentence, he says, "To break that down, for every one Xbox Series S/X console bought, 5 Playstation 5 consoles are also purchased."

Um, that doesn't follow at all. The data he just gave paints a 2 to 1 ratio. Yet he makes it sound ("to break that down"...) as if the 5 to 1 is just further elaboration on what he has just said - when actually it's contradictory.

I wonder where he's getting that 5 to 1 ratio from. He does not say (maybe he mentioned it in another part of the video I didn't watch). The context he sandwiches it in between contradicts it. Any 5 to 1 ratio would refer to current sales ratio, not overall sales ratio. You can't conflate the two. Confusing.

Haha. It was my bad. I skimmed the video because I dislike IGN, so I only heard the bit where he referenced generational sales numbers and then dropped the 5 to 1 statistic, as if it followed from what he just said, which it didn't. I had skimmed past (missed) the part where he referenced the 2024 Statista data. My bad. I should learn to hold my nose and watch the whole IGN video before commenting.

The first thread you linked is completely about games and specifically says "As a publisher, they are going to be a force to be reckoned with". That hasn't changed in the slightest.

The second thread is literally about an article saying Xbox's future is looking bright because of their move into third party and that we're seeing promising early signs when looking at their software sales on Playstation.

The third thread links to an article that, once again, is about the good software showing they had at their developer direct and focuses on the games they are soon to release.

Literally no one claimed Xbox hardware sales were going to make a miraculous turnaround.

Just kidding.

I can understand the Wii U and Series X. The Ouya is a bit of a head-scratcher, though. How did you like it?
I went over to a friends one night and they were playing one, we had an unreal time playing Towerfall Ascension so I picked one up.

we had a few more fun nights playing Towerfall and Duck game, but the UI on mine was glitchy and didn't work well. Never knew that it was such a massive flop until years later.

The question was why are people surprised those click bait articles are the reasons .

You don't understand.... I'm not gonna explain it to you, you can read the words, but understanding is the most important part.

Microsoft is pathetic. I don't see much chance for them to have successful next gen console. Series consoles didn't have fuck ups that Xbox One had and they still failed (even harder).

Whatch some 2014-2015 Xbox’s E3 conferences. The man Spencer over promised and under delivered. I did sold my SX when it was obvious that they were going third party. But even so by the time I did sold it last year I barely had any game in it. Ah, and don’t forget that late 360 era was not only Kinect. It was Halo 4. And when we thought things couldn’t get worse Halo Guardians and Infinty came. Guardians was better… ish, but the story was utterly fucked.
All hail the console that killed Xbox:

Remember when he said that games on the One X would be native 4K no excuses? there were a good number of native 4K games but most of them were not native 4K as time went on, to be fair it had the best console version of every game for the rest of that generation but it was also $100 more and came out a year later than the Pro. The fact is though he said native 4K no excuses and then that didn't turn out to be true and the gaming media never called him out for it, they rarely call him out for any of his BS.

That was the least of One’s problems. I’d play 720p games if they are worthy but I did skipped that Xbox generation and once I had a SX I only bought the Halos. 7 years and nothing worthy. Four more years after that and with a fantastic machine (SX) and still nothing. 11 years of nothing and then they buy some great exclusives only to become third party because the decision made of switching to game pass during that period of nothingness. Spencer said that you can’t win Sony making games but that’s complete bullshit because he didn’t even try that.

Oh yeah he is a pure salesman/politician yet so many people online act like he's their buddy and a true gamer because he wears videogame t shirts lol.

Microsoft isn't going anywhere. It's just that days of Xbox being seen as a desired gaming console for people are gone now. They had to deliver some heavyhitters to market and so far we have seen none from them, despite all the usual early gen promises.

The total sales of PS5 and Series consoles isn't 5 to 1 because it didn't start out that way, that's about what the ratio has been more recently and it's likely to continue but the generation didn't start out with that big of a differential, they both had shortage issues for a while.

Totally agree. MS couldn't save Xbox because despite all their trillions they don't know how to grow talent.

Yes Phil is an absolute idiot who has driven the brand into the ground. Worse than Mattrick in every way. The fact he hasn’t been sacked shows Nutella doesn’t know his arse from a hole in the ground as well.
Spencer has a boss too. I don't know what the purpose of the ABK acquisition was, but now it just feels it has nothing to do with Xbox. Maybe Microsoft just wanted to grow into huge publisher, period. Spencer trying to paint everything they do as in favor of "the health of Xbox" is obviously just PR talk.

There's a kind of casual boycott of US stuff so ... well yeah. Xbox was tanking even without that extra pressure from the rest of the World.

But people also said Xbox stocks are drying up, so won't this be infinity : 1 soon? Can't sell what you don't have - or indeed what you don't make.

Its crazy to me how much PS has steamrolled Xbox this gen. I think.MS has so much against them they could and never will be successful in hardware.

They're a company that no one likes and those that do...well look at the photos and Jizz.

Ive always enjoyed the platform and for me personally, have seen the benefits from programs such as play anywhere and cross buy etc. They've pushed free cloud saves for years. Great (compared to the competition) refund policies but none of this cool stuff can cut through how fucking useless they are at the day to day running of the business.

I think they could have really made some cool changes to policies happen within console gaming if they could have only just figured the basics out. I'm not saying running business is easy, far from it. Im jist saying you gotta deliver on the core principles or you end up where they are now.

Money is not the answer to good business. Strong individuals with good ideas that they execute is what matters. And MS have failed at every step on that front.

Third party will save them and make them a monster in the publishing of software world but ultimately I think we will lose out.

PS will absolutely destroy the xbox now as you would have to know exactly what you are signing up for to buy an Xbox this gen.

I perosnally don't feel Sony deserve the sales they are receiving this gen and I think their fans are far too soft on them as a business. Sony fans should be demanding free cloud saves and other benefits but that's another convo. The ps5 has clearly done what ever it needed to do to kill off Xbox but I dont think it's going to be sunshine and roses from here on out, unfortunately. But, maybe I'm just bitter and old 😉
