IGN: Ranking All 8 Spider-Man Animated Series

In terms of capturing the essence of the characters, I think it's actually pretty close. I also appreciated SSM's attempts to do more long-form story-telling, which I can't really recall B:TAS doing much of.

Yeah most animated shows don't do this form of storytelling anymore. I loved it.

So i tried quickly watching some clips of The Spectacular Spider Man to see what everyone was raving about, and I don't get it. It seems super childish, no mature undertones or anything that I could sense out of the "best of" clips. Even the quibs are all childishly written. Can someone link me to some good material from it so I can see what the love is for? I'm not getting Batman TAS vibes at all.

That list is pretty accurate, actually.

Spider-Man 94 was amazing for its time...but it's pretty rough in spots now to watch.

I wish there was a reboot of that cartoon with more modern trappings (a non-jank framerate, improved CG, real guns/weapons, etc) and additional arcs (One More Day? Civil War?). That would be, inarguably, the best Spider-Man thing ever made. PERIOD.

I'll represent Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends because none of you whippersnappers will!

I just finished the entire run on Netflix and holy crap I don't remember it being as insane as it is!

Spidey falls in love and leaves earth!

This episode is one long WAT.

There's even one where Pac Man comes out of the arcade machine and starts gobbling up Empire State University! Oh how I love the Spider-Friends, especially Firestar, she's hot.

Totally agree here. Spectacular is #1, sure, but this is my #2. love this show. CG Spidey might be my #3. The writing was solid.
I will never understand the love for 1994 spidey. I remember watching it and the awful x-men cartoon in college cringing.

Wish they'd hurry up and put Spectacular on Netflix. The 94 series isn't Batman TAS levels, but it's pretty good, and my main introduction to the character.

Yeah... Venom just said "THE SPIDERMAN DOTH PROTEST TOO MUCH METHINKS". That would make Raimi blush :\

How can I watch Spectacular? Never seen an episode. Grew up with the '94 animated series and also a lot of Spider-man and his amazing Friends reruns.

Everytime Spectacular Spider-Man is mentioned a Gaffer cries.

Seriously, awesome show. Remember watching it all on YouTube.

*reads thread title*

Spectacular better be #1 over TAS.

*reads OP*

Grew up watching and loving TAS, but Spectacular is the superior cartoon. Aside from Kaven's rushed transformation, it handled everything amazingly.

Such a shame that it was cancelled after season 2. There were so many well-crafted setups to future episodes...

Ultimate Spider-Man shouldn't had ranked that high at all though. I really tired to stick with it, but it's hot garbage. So is the rest of Marvel's current animation lineup for that matter.

Anyone that genuinely thinks 94 is better than Spectacular is out of their damn minds. 94 is probably my most nostalgic cartoon of all-time, and I actually do think it holds up better than some people say (the earlier stuff at least), but Spectacular is legitimately great on its own. I do agree that it can feel a bit rushed at times, among some other nitpicky stuff. But overall I think it's easily the best onscreen interpretation of Spider-Man to date

the new animated series that aired on MTV is actually pretty good. some good action, nice story and really interesting music even if the visuals could be hit or miss

Have you guys tried rewatching the show recently? I did. It..........wasn't a good look. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Yeah. #1 is (heh) spectacular. It sticks to the Spiderman ethos and nailed Spiderman as a character in my mind's eye. Much better action as well considering how Spiderman couldn't throw a punch in the 90s animated series.

The censorship guidelines were so weird back then. X-Men got away with a lot more (even some swear words on rare occasion!), and even with the flashes when someone got punched in Batman: TAS, they too got away with a lot more, and some of the episodes were downright demented. Why Spider-Man got singled out that fiercely remains a mystery.

I caught that episode randomly a few months ago and it was the most delightfully weird ass thing.

I grew up with #2 but saw a few episodes of #1 and it is vastly better.

Might as well mention that Xmen Evo is also better than 90's era Xmen.

Only 90s era Batman holds up over contemporaries though Brave and the Bold is awesome for its campiness.

As an old fart I 2nd this. My 2 year old recently discovered this series on Netflix and I am loving reliving it with him. So many great guests from the Marvel universe.

Will have to check out Spectacular based upon comments in this thread.

As a big comic spidey fan none of these shows really did it for me, but the Spider-Man theme song alone should put the 60s cartoon near the top of the list.

Hell no. That should be #1000000000000000000000000000000000000. Fucking shit is attocious, just plain awful.

I have to disagree. The character design in TAS ('94) was much better, also the fight scenes are so great oh and i love the sound effects, for example when Spidey crawls up a wall those gluey noises he makes, not sure if he does that in SSM.

He made Glue noises while wallcrawling? Never heard this.

I know there is a tv channel online that has the entirety of Spectacular up for streaming. I tried watching 5 or 6 episodes of it last time GAF talked about it (in the Blu-Ray thread I think) and wasn't impressed at all.

Not sure what it is that makes it so beloved.

It's close to the comics, but with its own twists. It takes many of the themes and plotlines and implements them well. The animation is incredible, particularly in fight sequences. It's a very well-designed show.

I used to love the 1994 Spiderman, but good god did that show not age well.

I'll get into detail later, but one of the most baffling things was that this was an example of a show that actually had WORSE animation as time went on.
