IGN Reviews Capcom Classics Collection...

and it is a piece of crappily written review. Review of the collection starts on the second page and goes only in skin deep. Gamespot, you better write a review that analyzes the porting job of the collection with actual depth!

Dang, I was hoping for some console verion ports, like MERCS Megadrive. Ah well, I'll pick it up when it pops out in Australia [hopefully]

8.1 is way too high. You'd have to be a nostalgia nut to enjoy most of those games today. The gameplay simply isn't as solid as some of Namco's and Taito's 80's games, and the art design overall sucks.

Where's my 1992-2000 Capcom Classics Collection? Now THOSE are eight years of Capcom goodness that still hold up well.

This seems very good from the review. I'm trying to decide whether I should get this, or wait for the recently announced PSP version which is supposed to have Side Arms and Strider added to the package. A PSP version should also avoid the interlacing issue that the IGN review mentioned.

The downside is that the PSP version will probably cost more than the $19.99 that the other versions are selling for, and I don't know when it is scheduled to be released.

I'm sold... Ghost and Goblin, Ghouls and Ghosts and Super Ghouls and Ghosts make this a must buy.

Where's the GCN version?

I'd give anything to play a flawless home port of MERCS... One of my fave arcade games when I was a kid. Nostalgia > All

no tate mode on mercs, i assume...i think i'll pick this up for its convenience and previously unported games, but it won't really replace my saturn capcom generations discs. psp version would be great, though.

Cap should of just gone w/ Atomic Planet for this port.

No thanks...did you ever *play* Puzzle fighter GBA?
I'm not up for my games crashing randomly, or losing my save info.

I'm actually considering waiting for the PSP version, since I usually only do classic gaming on the go...plus, I'm assuming the graphics won't be as jarring on the small screen.

Must continue funding Lim Tewinson's face punching via the Internet software application. WE MUST HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!

Buying this game as soon as finances allow. Screw your Devil May Cry and Metal Gears. :D

But seriously. Unless you're deeply nostalgic about one or two of those games, they really REALLY do not hold up well.

Forgotten Worlds would have been passable if it hadn't been for that horrible sound effect EVERY TIME I FIRE. The Street Fighters? Meh. SF2T for the 1890348634th time. Street Fighter 1 would have been more interesting. Trojan is still its lovable unplayable self. Bionic Commando is the nearly unplayable arcade version and not the (still great) NES game. The vertical scrollers are really old-school and lack the distinct graphics of Twinbee or SWIV. Final Fight... well, I have that portable if I ever want to play it again.

While I see that other ports (Strider at the time, or the Mega Mans) or lack of licenses (Alien vs Predator, Willow, the Disney games) may have stopped them from including some golden oldies, this collection is basically just boring.

Now, a Capcom Classics Collection with NES Bionic Commando, a few NES Disney games and both Aladdins, Street Fighter Alpha 1-3, Alien vs Predator, Strider, Captain Commando, a few Mega Mans, Warzard and Dungeons & Dragons... THAT would be a great collection.

...this collection is basically just boring.

Shut up!

Just shut up.

You're the sort of gamer that's going to be awoken in the middle of the night by the light of something burning, and find a burning NES game pad in your front lawn. And I'll be there with my pick-up truck and silly outfit shouting all sorts of obscenities about "your kind" and "the games you play". :P

:lol

I'm looking forward to this collection and I appreciate that Capcom didn't just release the same god damned shit they released last generation. Like Namco. How many Namco "classics" disks do we need that feature Pac-Man, Dig-Dug, and Pole Position?

How about a damned collection with NuMan Athletics, Steel Gunner, Phelios, Splatterhouse - etc?! >:(

More cheap ass classics disks are a good thing so long as it makes more of a developers back catalogue available to the public. Not everybody loves the same three games you do, and we shouldn't have to suffer for your tastes.

What's up with the SF2's floor in their pics? Boooo!

Is that a bad photo or is that the way Street Fighter II looks in the collection? There is no excuse for Capcom messing up the port they did SFAC the stage did not look like that.

The GnG games make it worth the price alone, even if the other games are bad. Which they aren't.

GBA Final Fight sucks. Everyone has the same annoying death sound and the lifebars were shortened without adjusting the damage level (WTF??)

Siegfried, you stink.

Why in the world do i want Namco's collection? Those games are far too ancient for me to enjoy.

I buy this alone for GnG, Final Fight, and the Street Fighters. These are great games that are the epitome of "classics," and not nolstalgia.

First, the review is fine. The reviewer does talk more about the "theme" of nostalgia and the titles in general than actual specifics, but that's really all that matters. Many people interested in this in the first place probably have already played/known about these games before-hand.

but it does run into a couple of small issues worth mentioning. Half the games in the set, for example, suffer from some pretty noticeable flicker and aliasing issues that weren't in the original versions, while the transparency effects are hindered by some pretty noticeable interlacing troubles (thank you frame skip!). It's not the end of the world, but it's there.

freaking LAME

I don't get it - didn't they use the Generations codebase for most of the games? Shouldn't those be identical then? At least they should for the PS2 version.

That would make sense, since that's what Atomic Planet did w/ Mega Man.

So what happened here? I checked Metacritic and PSM gave it a 91/100.

YOU FORGOT ABOUT POISON (and Roxy too!)

The #1 Reason all Nintendo based Final Fight games SUCK - I want my Poison! Half of the fun of the arcade game was punching her and watching the underboobies peek out from beneath the half shirt. :lol

Oh dear. You did it... now we'll see a 10 page thread balloon out of this, all centered around arguements that Poison is or isn't a transexual.

"lousy ports by atomic planet" would at least have run as well as the ps1 capcom generations discs, i.e. perfectly. i can't imagine where you're coming from.

Whoever wins... I still win!

:lol :lol :lol

Let me tell you. It was hard finding a picture of Poison I could post without getting banned in my DVD and CD archives. :P

Wha? Poison is a transexual? Someone better lay the details...

I don't know the exact origin, but the history goes something like this.

Back when Capcom was showing off Final Fight for the SNES, someone commented about beating up women. The Capcom rep then went on to say, oh - those are cross dressers. Please note, that's paraphrased; but it is documented.

Thus Poison and Roxy were replaced by two jackass guys in each Nintendo release of Final Fight.

Now I think the whole Poison with a throbbing cock is the result of word of this getting back to Pervertland Japan and one ingenious hentai artist running with it.

Allegedly Capcom somehow worked this all into the game "story", but the important thing to remember here is Underboobies > Nintendo. :P

This is as disturbing as finding out that Bridget is a boy.

Anybody played Final Fight Revenge so we can clear this mess?

Got confirmation from a friend who recently worked for Capcom of Japan on some secret project that Poison is indeed still a man (that friend would be EscoZG).

POISON

Hometown: Los Angeles
Height: 175cm
Weight: 52kg
Three sizes: B88 W66 H89
Likes: French fries
(Note: Officiality of bio is not confirmed. I found it on a couple
Japanese sites. Although if not official, why someone would make up
measurements is beyond me)

Final Fight 1: I dunno. Poison was a generic enemy, for crying out loud.

Final Fight Revenge: Mad Gear isn't around anymore to bail Poison out
whenever Poison gets in trouble, anymore. That's no fun! Worried about
being jailed for her crimes because Edi. E is now going after Mad Gear
members in a mad attempt to get a promotion, Poison sets Cody up for the
fall, instead. Distraught, she thinks about how Cody would have never
loved anyone besides Jessica, because she herself likes Cody [Conjecture
based on in-game storyline].

Street Fighter 3 Double Impact and Third Strike: Somewhere along the line,
Poison decided to go legit. She somehow ended up becoming the pro-wrestler
Hugo's manager.

Where Is 'She' Now: Probably still Hugo's manager.

Miscellaneous Facts and Notes

Poison grew up in an orphanage in Los Angeles. Somehow she wound up in
Metro City and became a member of the Mad Gear Gang. She lives with her cat
in an apartment facing the back streets of metro city.

Note: I refer to Poison as "she" just because I feel like it, like so
many others. She's really a he.

Poison is a "new-half", meaning a person who got a sex change. Poison
is a GUY. A guy with breasts, but a guy. This is official. This has been
official EVER SINCE FINAL FIGHT ONE EXISTED. However, most USA players
wouldn't know this at all, due to lack of storyline publications in the US
and the fact that Poison didn't even EXIST in Final Fight One for the USA
version. Capcom of USA thought that Poison was a girl (they STILL didn't
know she was a guy by Final Fight Revenge, for crying out loud), so when
Final Fight 1 came to the US, they changed Poison and 'her' pallet swap,
Roxy, into generic male punks, Billy and Sid, because censorship was high
back then and they feared people wouldn't like the idea of hitting girls.

Poison and Roxy in the planning stages of game were female. But a rep
from Capcom USA told the developers in Japan that USA won't like guys
hitting girls. So before the game came out, Poison and Roxy became
new-halfs. Capcom of USA didn't realize this and thus changed Poison and
Roxy to Billy and Sid, anyways. Methinks someones' got a communication
problem, there...

If you think Poison can't be a guy just because 'she' looks so 'woman',
no offense, but you really need to study up on Japanese Anime culture some
more...

Poison MIGHT have gotten a sex change for Final Fight Revenge and is
now a girl and not a guy (All About Capcom states "Could he finally went
and have gotten a sex change?" or something like that). As stated, Capcom
of USA still didn't know that 'she' was a guy, so they made her a girl when
they made Final Fight Revenge. It seemed that Capcom of Japan decided to go
with that, and officially state that she possibly got a sex change and
became a full-fledged woman for Final Fight Revenge and beyond. Although
in actuality, it was a joke. Apparently Capcom of Japan was just toying
around when they said Poison might have gotten a sex-change. A friend
(EscoZG) recently went to work for Capcom on a nondisclosed game (he said
it was possible to guess what that game was, though...) and spoke with
Capcom's Atsushi Iwasaki (a storyboard artist/animator) and several other
Capcom employees about Poison. They gave him the same story stated here in
this guide (that Poison was a girl, Capcom of America made them change her
into a man but they did NOT change the sprite so she was a transvestite,
then Capcom of America changed 'her' to Billy and Sid). They also said
that 'she' still officially was a man, so I guess in truth she didn't get
that sex-change for Final Fight Revenge, after all. The quote about the
sex-change for Final Fight Revenge in All About Capcom is probably Capcom
of Japan making fun of Capcom of America's ignorance. Oh, and on a random
side note, Atsushi also designed Morrigan's sprite. When asked about how
he felt about that sprite still being used after all these years, he got
kind of uncomfortably quiet, stated he had some storyboards he had to draw,
and left without answering the question... ^_~

The band Poison (lots of Final Fight characters have musical
references in their names) was known for its members that were guys but
looked like girls...

Poison's voice in Final Fight 1 kinda sounds like a guy trying to
sound like a girl. Her voice in Street Fighter 3 is a lot more
realistically female than her voice in Final Fight One, that's for sure.
However, I learned more about new-halfs and truth of the matter is that
a sex-change does not change your voice. New-halfs must train themselves
to change their own voices over time to sound more like the opposite sex,
which might be what Poison is doing (training "her" voice to sound
more feminine).

Poison and Hugo fight and bicker a lot, but they still get along really
well.

In Final Fight Revenge, Poison seems to have fallen in love with Cody
(again, silly Capcom of USA didn't realize that she was a he).

Um... I've been having trouble finding out if her official last name is
Kiss or if that's just fancanon. Sorry^^; I highly doubt it's official,
though. I've seen a couple Japanese sites use the name when talking about
Final Fight Revenge, though, so maybe it comes from there?

I've seen it mentioned in some sites that Roxy is her brother, but that's
also something I haven't been able to confirm. Wouldn't be surprised.

Lately, Hugo has been having trouble finding decent competition because
of his amazing strength, so he and Poison plan to start their own wrastlin'
organization, the H.W.A.

It doesn't matter, the cat is out of the bag. Or in Poison's case, her dong is always slipping out of her short shorts outside of non-Capcom art. :P

Final Fight Revenge: Final Fight Revenge never states that Cody was arrested for killing/kidnapping Jessica. In Cody's and Poison's endings, they set him up for 'Poison's crimes', but never state what those crimes are.

Poison stole Jessica's anal virginity before Cody! Or was it Cody's? :lol

That's a very long explanation, but very interesting.

I need to play FFR one of these days, even if it's awful like people said...

I'd rather have a decently emulated game by Digital Eclipse than a hack & paste port by the dimwits at Atomic Planet.

(See GBA Puzzle Fighter, GC Mega Man Anniversary Collection...)

IGN said Atomic Planet did a better job porting Mega Man Anniversary than Digital Eclipse w/ the Cap Collection. Anyway, that's not such a good comparison considering most of those MM games are kinda old.

Damn i miss Crawfish! Those guys know what they were doing...

... but Digital Eclipse is emulating the titles, where as Atomic Planet is monkeying around with code from a secondary port. It's apples to oranges... at least with an emulation, the game will play like the original.

So the Capcom Generation titles were emulated?

I'm confused... isn't the Cap Collection the same as the Generation titles?

Any word on the forgotten worlds controls? Does it use the 2 analog sticks?
Also, Trojan has some killer game music.

Wishlists for Vol. 2?
Mine:
Black Tiger (fuck yeah)
Pang (any)

Strider
Magic Sword
King of Dragons
Knights of the Round
