IGN Reviews Capcom Classics Collection...

But seriously. Unless you're deeply nostalgic about one or two of those games, they really REALLY do not hold up well.

Forgotten Worlds would have been passable if it hadn't been for that horrible sound effect EVERY TIME I FIRE. The Street Fighters? Meh. SF2T for the 1890348634th time. Street Fighter 1 would have been more interesting. Trojan is still its lovable unplayable self. Bionic Commando is the nearly unplayable arcade version and not the (still great) NES game. The vertical scrollers are really old-school and lack the distinct graphics of Twinbee or SWIV. Final Fight... well, I have that portable if I ever want to play it again.

While I see that other ports (Strider at the time, or the Mega Mans) or lack of licenses (Alien vs Predator, Willow, the Disney games) may have stopped them from including some golden oldies, this collection is basically just boring.

Disagree. Yes, straight arcade games tend to make bad home games (just keep pumping the quarters), but the set-up here makes it work well because it encourages you to play on a single quarter to unlock stuff. Capcom's games have tended to be enjoyable for repeat plays more than those from other companies with arcade collections, and the assortment here sounds well ranged.

Now, a Capcom Classics Collection with NES Bionic Commando, a few NES Disney games and both Aladdins, Street Fighter Alpha 1-3, Alien vs Predator, Strider, Captain Commando, a few Mega Mans, Warzard and Dungeons & Dragons... THAT would be a great collection.

We're way past due for a slew of NES, Genesis and SNES compos. :D

So the Capcom Generation titles were emulated?

I'm confused... isn't the Cap Collection the same as the Generation titles?

Unless I'm nuts, my understanding is that the Capcom Collection is different from the Generation titles... that Capcom Collection is a set of arcade emulations. That would explain Digital Eclipse being the developer, as they are the industry experts when it comes to emulation on game systems. If they were merely porting the titles from the earlier releases, there would be no reason for Capcom to go with Digital Eclipse.

My understanding is that Digital Eclipse worked on the 6 added arcade games for this collection, namely Final Fight, Trojan, Legendary Wings, Bionic Commando, Section Z, and Forgotten Worlds. The original 16 games, which spanned all 5 volumes of the Capcom Generations titles and done by Capcom themselves, are ports of the PSOne original codebases. Digital Eclipse then rounded up all the bonus content Capcom provided, constructed the interface, and bam.....you have final package of Capcom Classics Collection.

Though I don't have any evidence myself, Kumiko is likely correct; if you look at the games chosen, it's obvious that the lineup was set up to take as much as possible from the generations titles (Which I honestly am thankful for, as I always wanted the generation titles released here)

If this was merely an arcade collection, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, a console-only title, wouldn't be present. But it is, because it was present on the original generations disc.

Ah. That would make sense, then... is Digital Eclipse the only listed developer? I'm asking as Midway is doing something similar with MAT3 -- they are porting half the games and having Digital Eclipse emulate the other half.

so Ghouls n Ghosts is based on the PS1 version of Ghouls n Ghosts in Capcom Generation2 which was a slightly imperfect port like the Saturn version. darn, which means the ending music is different and there are a few other minor things wrong, going by the PS1/Saturn versions.

so how close are the newly ported/emulated CCC versions of Final Fight and Forgotten Worlds?

I haven't played Final Fight on CCC yet, but I just ran through Forgotten Worlds. It's accurate, and controls fairly well with the Dual Shock, but the sound is just God awful. When you kill the God of War it's ear-shatteringly bad.

I also played a little 1943 Kai (which hasn't aged well) some Street Fighter II Hyper (which has, and plays pretty well but has some strange load times) and a big of Ghouls n Ghosts. GnG was never one of my arcade stand-bys, but it looks pretty good. I suck at this game so I only made it to the second area before giving up.

I'll let you know how Final Fight turned out later.

Street Fighter II has "Now Loading" screens before each fight, but not between each round. They also occur before the exchange of wisdom after a fight is over. The loads are super quick, so much so that a Now Loading screen may not have even been necessary. I found the SFII sounds to be pretty accurate.

Also, I just ran through Final Fight which seems to be pretty well intact. It too has a few sound problems, but they aren't as bad as Forgotten Worlds.

Keep in mind it's been a while since I've played some of these games, so don't take my word as gospel. But, I used to play a shitload of Forgotten Worlds. It all sounds off to me.

I don't know about that. Which console version of MERCs previously had a three player mode? I'm not saying it didn't exist, I just can't remember.

Not bugged by the minor SF2 inconsistencies... they do seem to be the Generations versions tho...

Final Fight though, yes... woo... crossdressers, plenty of enemies on screen, all the arcade levels.... yum. Of course the Sega CD remix soundtrack was better, but I''ll take the brighter colors in the CCC version any day.

Sega CD Final Fight vs Arcade Final Fight (i havent got CCC yet)

not just FAR fewer colors in Sega CD version, but less intricite background detail as well. not to mention Sega CD FF has around half as many thugs on-screen.

So SF2 is ported and not emulated, and it now has load times? Weird, I don't remember any loading at all in the SF Anni Collection. Sucks that it's there, even if fast.

Oh well, Final Fight is all that matters anyway. The Mad Gear must pay!

At $20, I definitely think it's worth it. I'm hoping for a CCC2, which would reasonably include the following:

1941
Black Tiger
Buster Bros.
Captain Commando
Carrier Airwing/U.S. Navy
Knights of the Round
Magic Sword
Mega Twins
Pang
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Side Arms
Street Fighter
Strider
Super Buster Bros.
The King of Dragons
Three Wonders
Tiger Road
Varth

These would be nice to have but seem less likely to impossible due to licensing issues:
Area 88
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Dynasty Wars
Pnickies
The Punisher
Warriors of Fate

Then move onto CCC3 and the CPS2 board! :D

Got the game yesterday and I like it a lot.

As mentioned above, SFII does have fast loading screens. It is just like Street Fighter Collection 2 (PS1), except quicker. So the Street Fighter games in the collection are definitely ports of the older Playstation titles. One minor gripe is that they used the patented Capcom "soft" filter, so the game is not as sharp as it should be. Also, the game screen can be stretched but it does not fill the entire screen, at least on my TV. The same can be said for most of the games in the collection, but this should not be an issue if you have a decent sized TV.

I also played through most of G&G, Super G&G, and Final Fight. They all seem very faithful to the originals and are still a lot of fun.

Each game in the collection has bonus content and different options, which is excellent. For example, SFII has character profiles that I remember were in an old EGM issue. Did you know that Ryu hates spiders, and Guile and Zangief are like 50 years old now?

There is also a trailer for the PSP version that features cool games like Strider not in this collection, which is weak.

I can see myself playing games in this collection on and off for a long time to come. Now how about a Collection 2, Capcom? Please?

For those of you who have it, does it have the full Final Fight intro (with Jessica appearing on the TV screen) or the cut one (with only Thrasher)?

the Satrun version does. I should know I won it and have played 3 players. I assume the playstaion would too. this would be on Capcom generations 4.

Just watched it and did not see Jessica.

yea...that's about one of the worst to replay for me right now.

Really? I think it holds hope relatively well. I like the large, arcade-style boss sprites. "Did you think you could stop me with a paramecium?"

For me, Commando, 1942, and Gunsmoke are worse than I remember.

She's not on the TV. Strangely enough though, Poison and Roxy are dressed like chicks and they used the real names for Damnd and Sodom (instead of Thrasher and Katana). Rolento's industrial stage is in, all of the little "walk into the subway" type animations are in, and holy crap can this version PACK enemies on-screen.

Just got this

Section Z rawks...never even heard of the game before

I suck at it though...maybe that's due to the lack of sleep...verticle sections = Wakune cry

She's not in the intro of the US arcade version either.

Weird, so they have the names from the Japanese version, but the intro from the US? What the hell? Was Jessica in a bra on the TV too hot for our North American eyes?

She's not in the intro of the US arcade version either.

Which is why I asked. In the Japanese version, she appears in a bra. In all home ports she's redrawn to be in her red dress as far as I remember.

JP MegaCD version is the only known one where Jessica is in a bra like the JP arcade. I don't know about all of the various PC ports.

So far, CCC Final Fight contains everything from the US arcade version minus the insert coin phrase.

I havent played CCC yet so I have no impressions of it - but here's a comparison between Sega CD, Sharp X68000 and arcade Final Fight. until CCC, the X68000 version was by far the closest to being arcade-identical.

MegaCD/SegaCD Final Fight gets owned pretty badly, graphically, by CPS Arcade and X68000

look at the detail missing, not just color, from SegaCD FF in the wood railings on the sides of subway stairs. okay well at least in FFCD the wood is there, unlike on SNES FF, SFC FF/FFG, GBA FFO.

Yeah, what's up with the GC version?

I don't think there is a Cube version or at least at this point there isn't. IGN was the only site that said that it was coming out for the Cube but IGN has so many errors in what they write you can never trust just them. So it's either not coming out or its going to be like Lego Star Wars where they release it 6 months after every other version has come out.
