There's a lot to like in The Warriors. The gameplay is varied, the combat is deep, and the presentational and multiplayer extras really push it forward. The biggest issue for many may ultimately turn out to be the game's extreme level of violence (expect lots of blood, lots of swearing, and lots and lots of street-level combat), but given its source material, you can't really that surprised with it. Of course, the sometimes-glitchy camera and high difficulty level may not be received so well either.

Even so, The Warriors is a great and multiplayer experience and it does amazing things with a license that most people probably wouldn't have expected much from. It's a true step forward in the brawling genre, and that in itself is a victory.

Another Take from Douglass C. Perry
Rockstar's The Warriors is a heavyweight game. Mixing parts from Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto, the Toronto studio has added depth, surprise, and meat where other beat-'em-ups and brawlers have fallen flat. You want length? The Warriors is about 15-20 hours, which is saying something for beat-'em-ups. You want depth? This brawler delivers hits with video and audio impact, while providing a tight, reactive fighting mechanism and a substantial move set.

I'll admit, however, this game won't win any awards for revolutionary graphics. Finally, the co-op mode makes this one very worth your while. The camera isn't always your best friend, but Rockstar does enable you to tether or untether the second player, who can join or leave at any point. In short, all of the basics are well covered, and the list of surprises and secrets will make you smile and will make fans of the genre very happy indeed. The more you play The Warriors, the more you realize what a powerful homage this truly is to the original games of its kind.

I'm sure Darien will be happy to see that they didn't disgrace this movie. Also looks like Rockstar is slowly working past only being that company that makes GTA games.

What the...heck. It ISN'T just State of Emergecy with a shitty cult classic movie license?

Oh Gosh... gaming overload again...

Too many great games in a short period......and just the build up for the holidays.

I need to make a Must Have list and cry for the rest until they hit the bargain bin. =(

Not to sound like a graphics whore, but is Rockstar capable of making a single game that isn't downright ugly to look at? This game better have a large scope to the levels and a lot of interactivity to make up for its hideousness.

Note that SoE got an 8.3 from IGN so this should at least be .4 better. Manhunt also got an 8.5 from IGN so it should be at least .2 better.

Hopefully the game rocks and all that, but Rockstar games do tend to get a bit overrated when they first arrive each time...

YESSSSSS. I had a feeling this was going to turn out good, with a dash of doubt earlier today.

(And some of us LIKED Manhunt)

I can't wait to get this puppy in my hands... soon... soon my pet... I'll have new food for you! <pats PS2>

You simply MUST watch the movie before you play the game people...

Yeah, I'm just hoping it's good. The review sounds interesting enough, and I tend to take reviews on a writer by writer basis as opposed to just saying all these scores at IGNs.

I wasn't really interested in this game jus' cause of lack of funds, but it sounds compelling. Wait for more reviews, of course.

…tell me this, I have never seen the film EVER, I never knew of the film till R* announced the game (don’t hate me) but now with the release been so close and the same sounding good I am thinking of buying it (I love this kind of game) so should I watch the movie first (which would kind of ruin the story of the game, but may make me enjoy the game more when I play) or play the game first (and experience the story first hand via gameplay)

I've seen the movie 100 times, but it actually takes place before the movie, so I plan to play the game and then watch the movie again. IGN even said the game has a great narrative. I have gone from barely passing interest to now, where I can't wait to get over to eb tomorrow.

No, the review even says the last five levels are straight from the movie. There's a hell of a lot more in the game. This game should complement my Warriors: SE DVD purchase.

The only thing that takes place before the movie is the first level. That's it.

uh?

The beauty of this is that a good 80% of the game is really not about the movie at all. It's only the last five missions or so that see Cleon and the gang make their escape back to Coney Island.

This is pretty cool and what a bonus I had no idea the game was focused so much on the lead up... cooooooool.

I'll go back and reread the review but I'm sure it said something like all but the last 5 missions deal with events before the movie. Its all about how the Warriors formed and how they ended up in Coney

Better story than GTA or other R* game, that ought to say something right there...80% into the game before you get to the part based on the movie...Cross between GTA and Manhunt, someone call Jack Thompson, quick! :D

Jack has already spoke out against them game. He said the film caused alot of gang violence when it was released, and now Rockstar is unleashing a new version on another generation.

Good idea...but I think Amused_To_Death would oppose it :D

I wouldn't if they keep the price at $50... :D

I haven't heard anything from him on the Warriors so I assumed something that is a cross between GTA and Manhunt, from the evil doers Rockstar, should really get him going...I wonder if he even knows the game is out?

this game is too good for this thread to die so quickly.

everybody should at least rent this game. The fighting engine is deep and brutal.

R* needs to add an enhanced version into GTA4

confirming it works on HDLoader, it also appears to fix the lip-syncing too. I still bought it, always happy to support another great R* title. Feels like a perfect compliment to the movie

Does it have a satisfying feel to the combat? I hate when games that feature melee feel light or weak in their crunchiness.
it feels very satisfying - thick punches and great use of vibration. 3 buttons go very far. Not vf4, but deep. I almost want to go buy an arcade stick. The ds2 does fine but this has a definate arcade rumbler feel.

If I buy a stick, which should I get?

I love the avatar sir.

Yeah, I change em' every week or two.

And I thought about keeping up with tradition and using a DMC related avater, but then I'm like--why not give this hot ass pornstar some GAF love, you should see her a full feature vid! :D

Can't say I've ever seen The Warriors, but this game does sound interesting. May give it a play sometime.

Also inquiring minds want to know who that is in C-Warrior's avatar :lol
