iGN reviews WoW

Jebus, seven page review? O.o

http://pc.ign.com/articles/572/572070p1.html

9.5 Presentation
A very friendly and inviting design, and the official web site has a truckload of nicely presented information.
8.9 Graphics
The art direction is phenomenal, but low poly count will hurt longevity in a constantly advancing industry.
9.0 Sound
Gorgeously arranged music doesn't get old, ambient sound is rich, and the sound effects are plentiful and sharply done; dialogue is minimal
9.0 Gameplay
A refined and fun-oriented design rewards the MMO player, but there's still some character class and trade skill balancing to be done.
9.5 Lasting Appeal
I've been playing since Spring, and I'm still playing--and enjoying it.
9.1
OVERALL:
(out of 10 / not an average)

hard game to judge, I think you need to play for about a 2-3 weeks really to see the game for what it is.

i love this game more than anything ever. and this is coming from someone that despised the mmorpg genre 2 months ago.

seriously, a five player party + voice chat = sex

edit: the voice chat is third party. in this case, xbox live.

If you know someone who bought the collecters edition it came with a free pass for a friend to sign up for a 10 day trial.

This is bullshit, MMORPGs have yearly expansions and 1 out of 2/3 with a new graphical engine.

Look at how DAoC improved with the latest expansion. Besides, look at it from the bright side. How many more people can play WoW in comparison to EQ2 based on their computer rigs...

Its not that his graphics complaint isnt valid or anything. The complaint could be leveled against DAoC that its texture work is largely lacking and in places the style presented is generic, but then we could still fall back on the IT WORKS ON MORE COMPUTERS but seriously, if your computer is too shitty ro run stuff these days you just arent upgrading right.

Performance of PC titles is leveling for a bit and its the perfect time to take a breather from upgrading.

Com'on hooker.

Tort: That sounds like a pretty good deal. Oh wait, collectors edition costs more doesnt it? So SOMEONE is still paying for those 10 days. I really find it unbelievable Blizzard is so stingy with free trials.

Where is the 12 page thread bitching about how low the score is now?

ASPT there not being one.

Oh WoW... only 5 days away. Yay.

oh boo hoo. the graphics score is almost too high. the character models have nothing on FFonline.

Texture work is perfect IMO. Doesn't have to be better really.

I never claimed that the "will play on more computers" is an excuse for not having the best graphics ever. I know and acknowledge the fact that this game isn't a technical showcase graphics wise. But the art makes up a lot for it. With all the graphical pooha enabled (full-screen glow and that crap) it looks quite lovely and dreamy. Not on HL2 levels (then again, nothing does) but I don't think anybody _should_ complain about it.

I have to cut this short, work is getting a bit too demanding at the moment :/

I guess I have a little more time.

Reading comprehension is a thing of the past I reckon. If you would have taken your time instead of spewing your moronic views regarding this, you would have noticed that I said that his reasoning (longevity of the title would be in jeopardy due to not having the best graphics around) is bullshit. *cough* Counter-Strike 1.6 *cough*

I never said WoW had texture problems, I was talking about DAoC.

Well this falls back on the whole technical vs art scoring debate on graphics. Whle WoW is highly stylized its a 'look thats been around a while' and while thats to its credit, it also lessens the impact upon a seasoned pc game reviewer. Plus this is a PC gamer, console gamers tend to look at presentation more than the technical aspects thanks to japanese influence (and it does matter).

I agree that WoW has some exemplary graphics (though if I had to complain, I'd ask for more animation variety).

Basically, if you do a technical / artisitic split like Gamespot does w/ their awards, you'd be hard pressed to find a better game in the "artisitc" category this year.

For technical this year? Half-Life 2 (PC) & Ninja Gaiden (Console) would get the award from me.

I posted these on another board from yesterday, but I feel they are a great example of technical vs. artistic. low poly but beautiful design

and no that's not some "cheap" bottomless chasm.. there is a bottom and that is where you have to start.. you work your way up the spires to the various encampments on top.

too bad this isn't like COH with actual knockbacks and knocking mobs off ledges.. :P

The first shot is relevant, but the following two are pictures of rocks and glow, which shows youre just a whore for the glow. Which is nice n all but seriously. They're rocks with bridges. DAoC has that too.

no, the second picture is relevant I feel because there are some seriously low polys in there (the boulder on top) yet the design of the land is gorgeous.

the third one again comes down to abysmal graphic quality. I mean the bridges and whatnot are just ugly, but the concept of these bridges hundreds of feet high (literally) and being able to look down and seeing the specks of PCs running around underneath you.. that is very cool and all a detail afforded by art direction. not to mention the placement of the lighting and understanding how that shadowing will hit the spires.

by comparison to your picture poseted, which IMHO is very busy and confusing to the untrained eye (ie not actually having played the game and knowing what;s going on).

I think the reviewer has that graphics comment backwards. Because of the great art direction the game will stand the test of time in graphics despite being low poly.

I've only played FFXI, but is there any other MMORPG out there that can match this beauty? A couple pics I took while playing the game...

Heck, I have a hard time finding many other console/PC games that look this nice. Blizzard artists are amazing.
