IGN: Splatoon's lack of voice chat is "cheap and lazy"

At launch you can party, but the teams are automatically randomized.

The august update will add in the team-party functionality and matchmaking for pre-made teams.
But August is so far away. D:

I wasn't all that interested in the game, but a bunch of friends has convinced me to pick it up. I don't think they know about the lack of pre made team matchmaking.

Honestly, I could care less for voice chat as even on PC, I don't really use it. I understand the want for the option or, at the very least, queues to let your team know when they are needed and where (there were moments when I found huge areas on our side covered in the enemies paint and my teammates were just ignoring the area).

I still have a blast without it and I loss nothing from the game not having it, it would make things easier though.

Interesting. Would suck for me and my crappy internet then haha

Perhaps it might be probable that they patch it in once the friend lobbies update is up in like August I think?

No clue. I almost have to wonder if the WiiU simply doesn't have the OS level support for robust party chat or chat features in general. The games that do have it, have it coded into them directly and it isn't even very good (MH3U, BLOPS2U, Smash, Kart) compared to what I can get while playing Halo.

You can technically skirt the issue if you have eight friends, since then it will just randomize the whole thing. But they've been pretty upfront on the lack of the matchmaking feature at launch, so make the call accordingly.

Admittedly, they haven't said how the ranked matches actually work and/if they randomize. Shuffle's only been shown for Turf War.

You're right, I am ignoring those people because my argument is against universal public voice chat. I don't give a rats ass how friends are talking to each other and what implementations Nintendo has made, if any. I talk to my friend's via Skype or Facetime because the sound quality is superb and better than what any console (except Xbox One maybe) can give me.

At this day and age it's simply poor software if it asks you to use Skype/Facetime for VOIP when pretty much any online service that connects people does it on its own.

"I don't give a rat's ass" isn't a great argument either, and I'm pretty sure you know that.

I don't think they leave out voice chart because of laziness.
And while I strongly prefer the option to be available, I am SICK of creeps and ill-mannered people who cannot complete a sentence without a certain word start with the letter "F". That's the solo reason I have never enabled microphone in MH3U.

It being a cooperative game and MH, everyone on there I ever talked to was super nice.

Fran Mirabella wrote an article on IGN today about Splatoon's lack of voice chat.

He says Splatoon can still be enjoyable without voice chat, but he doesn't believe that the game will hold his attention for multiple months without community chat aspects.

Here are some snippets.

IGN reviewer porbably didn't know about the pingping or was to stupid to look at his minimap.

Try harder.

Take a look at 4chan or HOTS thread here and you will see that we met a lot of toxic players.
I specialy met some in MOBAS. Limiting the intereaction between randoms reduce greatly the toxic behaviors.

That was the official reason they gave for only having it between matches with friends in Smash. I dunno if it's actually accurate or not

Wait. Smash has a chat feature? What. Why didn't I know this? D:

I feel dumb now.

It blows my mind that it blows other people's minds that a game could not have voice chat in 2015. Sure, it may be "cheap and lazy" but why bother with something as small as this if it may hinder the online experience, community-wise and connection-wise. If you're one of those saying you aren't gonna buy the game because of this, you likely weren't gonna buy the game anyway.

But, I agree they should add it when they add in party matches (which is the real travesty). I've also never seen any game that has all voice disabled as default and I'm not sure why that is. Also, pretty much every MOBA has no in-game voice-chat and they are arguably the biggest team basted multiplayer games today. Valve and Riot have commented on why many times I believe.

For the 6000th time, then YOU mute YOURS. This isn't a difficult concept.

If you don't like loud radios, do you advocate for the removal of ALL loud radios or just turn yours down?

Great arguments are pointless for people who already have their mind made up. Science will back me up on that as well. I'm just being straightforward about my emotions towards the matter.

This is forgivable on PC because of the third party options available. But there's no excuse to not have it on console.

How the hell do you rationalize calling working with other players as a team "toxic gameplay"?

You know how you prevent spawn-camping? You design a game that doesn't promote spawn-gamping.

You know how you prevent spamming annoying tactics? You design a game that doesn't promote spamming annoying tactics.

You know how you don't prevent those things? Removing voice chat in an online team-based shooter in 2015.
You are just mad cause I used the word toxic right. :p

U know that there will always be people that gonna exploit stuff whenever, creating toxic gameplay. Then just add the function to speak and you create a full team of toxic players, they may invent some special co-op toxic as well making it even worse. Even normal players can create it as well, as communication can straight up be an advantage, others that don't use it to avoid the other dangers of voice chat can be severely hampered when facing those who do.

I know calling working together 'toxic' might be reaching it, but killing voice chat can be a very effective way to level the playing field. Something that a lot of design decisions in this game seem to go for as well.

What's wrong with blops2 chat? I tried it a few times and it seemed to work fine, besides that the only people talking are 9 year olds chatting about non game related things.

WiiU definitely doesn't have OS level party chat support, it seems like they just didn't consider it when designing the system. It never notifies you on the screen about anything while playing a game either (I wonder if they could even patch this in now without any existing games expecting any sort of system UI overlay during play), just flashes the home button on the game pad when you get a system PM or something.

Do you feel like the people who are muting because of others are the people that you want muting at all?

Wait. Smash has a chat feature? What. Why didn't I know this? D:

I feel dumb now.

Yes, it does, but its not worth using. The reason for not having it mid-match was stated as a latency/bandwidth concern for smoothness of play, IIRC. So either they say that as PR fluff or it actually is their reason for avoiding it.

Its laggy and the quality is shit.

They could definitely patch in an on-screen overlay notification from the base OS, just as the OS can always kick in and override the game from the Home button. Its not like the system's OS shuts down the moment you boot a game. :P

I think its more that they just don't "believe" in notifications that disrupt the screen/gameplay.

Dunno why, but even then I found voice chat annoying in PS3 games lol.

I don't mind this. But with friends it should be an option
Sure. As long as I can completely disable that too like in Pokemon X&Y since I dislike chatting. Nintendo has done pretty good with that lately. The thing is Nintendo's teams and developers are all different so some people might be fine with voice chat with friends (Pokemon had that since Diamond and Pearl and of course Smash WiiU and MK8 has it) while others like the Splatoon Team I guess don't like voice chat with friends for some reason. Maybe it'll be in a patch for those who want it. One thing I know for sure is that voice chat will never happen with randoms. I was surprised they did it with friends with MK8 and Smash since you can get friends so easily on Miiverse.

And this whole different teams reminded me that Splatoon has no MKTV YouTube upload like feature. :/

The way they explained it in the direct made it seem to me like you can only join one friend at a time, like it just showed them choosing "Join Game" on the list of friends. I guess you could do it by having multiple friends join the same person's game?

For the 6000th time, then YOU mute YOURS. This isn't a difficult concept.

There's a reason I added "connection-wise" so you wouldn't FUCKING REGURGITATE WHAT YOU'VE SAID 6000 TIMES. (I can caps too)

Really? I'm pretty sure Dota 2 has voice chat =/

Whelp, my mistake then. Haven't played in awhile and mainly only ever saw pings.

Do you feel like the people who are muting because of others are the people that you want muting at all?

I don't feel any way. This is a ludicrous policy.

You mute it if it's a problem in your life. Others will use it.

Adding connection-wise changes zero.
If they cannot find a want to use the bandwidth as other have in countless other online games, then they should ask for help.

I would totally advocate for the removal of other people's loud radios.

Yes. You can just have multiple friends join in and "take over" a lobby.

Why do you care ? You didn't even tried the game. I didn't saw you once in the live demo thread.
Lot of people like you whoo is bashing this... Are you bashing this like others without even played the game and see if it is REALLY a must have among strangers ?!
I dislike people who judge without even trying first. At least the guy at IGN seems ti have tried the demo.

Is it a must have among strngers ?
NO, there're pingings in the game and if you're not brain afk or Tunnel vision you should be able to understand what to do.
Seriously, how the hell do you think we're playing in MOBAS like HOTS ? Pinging is totally enough even in ranked.

Is it must have among friends ?
No because I played Fantasy Life on 3DS with a Gafer, without a question we used Skype just for chatting.
But could it be nice with close friends ? Maybe.

The excuses to try to defend Nintendo's actions are hilarious. Especially the "Good... The game is better now" responses. It's called mute. No one ever responds to posts saying to mute the VC because there is no response.

Honestly for such an innocent game it would be nice to hear some friendly banter online. Perhaps we'll get it in an update?

It wouldnt even be that hard to implement really. The game can set VC to mute by default and so just unmute players you want to hear or only allow people on your friends list to be able to communicate.

i find it more funny that some people are advocating no voice chat because lil timmy on the mic in 2009 said "you suck" or the "F" word and you got offended for 3 seconds before you muted him.
smh.

Why would you guys want less options? Like i haven't used voice chat since 2012 but not including it in derives some player experience which has been standard for several years in online games and games with online features.

I hope they patch it in but nintendo gonna nintendo.

I feel the same. The game design is intuitive enough (maybe not the initial gyro controls) that voice chat isn't necessary. In fact, I would argue the bad outweighs the good as voice chat isn't needed to overcome poor design flaws or games that have large, slow paced gameplay that requires communication (CS).

The gameplay is fast paced and chaotic. Constant orders going out by someone as the map changes will not be fun and make the game more of a chore than what its supposed to be... a game.

Everything you've said in this thread has been veiled in ignorance and stupidity, this takes the cake though.

The most fun I've ever had with a multiplayer game was Rainbow Six Vegas, and I played it competitively with other people, joined clans, played other clans, was in a clan that made it into the top 10 on the now barren and stupidly titled site called Gamebattles.

Point is, if you tried to play that game competitively without a mic, you can't and would never be able to. Competition in that game was intense, fun, frantic. If someone dares to actually get really good at Splatoon, they have no reason to keep playing once they reach the fullest height of the skill ceiling due to fucked matchmaking and having to recruit or get to know people outside of the game itself.

Where do they take those skills? Nowhere. That doesn't lend itself to replayability or drive to better yourself at the game.

You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and your viewpoint is laughable.

Cheap and lazy???

That's likely very misinformed.

Should it be included???

I wanted it pretty badly with this game(the lack of voicechat is one issue I do get pissed at Nintendo about) but it's probably the higher ups' decision in not wanting any controversy surrounding Nintendo's family-friendly rep.

Someone's mad.

And your argument is about a game that requires constant communication and slow paced gameplay (to an extent). But hey, my opinion's dumb. Guess I will just go finish up binding my thesis.

I'll just make this my last post about this topic: yes, voice chat should be an option in the game even though I personally would likely not use it. Hopefully they can do something about this with an update or something somehow.

Yes, it does, but its not worth using. The reason for not having it mid-match was stated as a latency/bandwidth concern for smoothness of play, IIRC. So either they say that as PR fluff or it actually is their reason for avoiding it.

People already responded ITT pointing out that if voice chatting gives an in-game advantage then that puts pressure on those who don't like voice chat to turn it on and talk to other people on their team.

The Splatoon developer already said in an interview that they are pitching this game to those who are scared of online communications because of bad experiences in the past. There are many other games including 2 CoD games on Wii u if you can only play games with in game chat.

I do not remove the pickles from the cheeseburgers I eat even though I hate pickles.

Kill all pickles so that I will never have to eat pickles again.

I wouldn't complain if voice chat was in, sure working together is nice. You sometimes get cool people and sometimes get assholes, that's just online games. The people acting like no one will be toxic are insane though.
