From portable terrors to playable teasers, these are the best Silent Hill games to chill your spine.

The Silent Hill series has been at the forefront of feel-bad survival horror storytelling for close to three decades now, and with the success of 2024's Silent Hill 2 remake and the recent release of Silent Hill f, it felt like the right time to take a look back through Konami's catalogue of psychological horrors to see how each scarefest stacks up.

Now, admittedly, the series hasn't been immune to the odd misstep here and there, and there have certainly been periods of time where things have gone more downhill than Silent Hill. Thus you won't find the likes of forgettable mainline entries like Silent Hill: Homecoming and Silent Hill: Downpour here, or the inappropriately aggressive shoot 'em up action of Silent Hill: The Arcade, or indeed the co-operative dungeon crawling of Silent Hill: Book of Memories that absolutely nobody asked for.
With all that in mind, here's IGN's picks for the very best entries in the Silent Hill series.

My first Silent Hill game was 2 on PS2 but I did really enjoy Homecoming on, I think, Xbox 360. Since then I've played Silent Hill 2 Remake, which is a flawed gem (the flaws being the UE5 issues that Bloober never properly fixed on PC) and now Silent Hill f, which is I really like for its interesting Japanese setting and puzzles. Sadly not played any of the others listed by IGN so that likely means I'm in for a treat when they (hopefully) release the remakes of the original Silent Hill and Silient Hill 3.

Silent hill 2 remake was my first Silent hill and i loved it. But silent hill F is really not doing it for me with that melee focused combat. (havent played it yet tho). Just not talking to the resident evil/dead space brain i got.

There are only 15 SH games, and this is counting stuff that never made it to North America like Silent Hill: Play Novel and Silent Hill: The Arcade. The only other games are pachinko and mobile titles that can't even be played anymore

It would be easier and less time consuming to just say "here are the handful of SH games we don't feel are worth your time".

The Room is waaaaaaaaay too far down. This is the most egregious placing.

I also like PT, but placing a straight up teaser with a few first person jump scares that high is kind of a joke.

SH2 remake should be second place. OG2 is in the right spot.

SH3>1.

I haven't fully beat SHf yet, but it's on track for somewhere 3rd-5th place I think.

It is just a walking simulator demo. It is not even scary in any way. Yet, it still managed to fuck up modern Resident Evil line-up due to the undeserved critical praise.

Where is homecoming and Downpour? The fact that they are not included is insulting and means this video is null and void. Don't care if the hardcore fanboys hate them, I thought they were good sh games.

Also Book of memories was a thing too (a thing that shouldn't of existed but still labeled silent hill).

Also PT is a damn 5 minute hallway tech demo, not a game. I don't see what is so great about it, it was more like resident evil 7 than silent hill, don't see what the obsession with it was. ( i know that will ruffle some feathers around here, people go nuts for that demo. I don't get it. )
