(IGN) Xbox U.S. Console Unit Sales Just Reached an All-Time November Low

A competent leadership would be working of FSR4 o XBOX, redesigning the Series X and a price cut.

How do they still have jobs?

Phil Spencer isn't failing

When deciding to go third party they knew it would kill the Xbox console business and proceeded anyway.

Phil's job is to sell as many games in as many places as possible now.

Xbox Series is being left to rot.

And gamers are showing how successful his "play anywhere" initiative is by buying PS5/Switch2/Nex Playground.

Sony will likely see the benefit next gen when consumers are given the choice of a $599 PS6 or a $999+ "Xbox" branded PC, both of which play all Microsoft games released day and date.

Xbox Series consoles have stopped selling, but people are still using and buying games on their existing Xbox consoles.

After every decision this company has made the past ten years?

Its simply a no brainer at that point.

No exclusives
All games on PC day one
Gamepass on PC
Raised the price twice
Gamepass price increase
Multiplatform first party games on competing platforms.

It's a miracle that the XBOX numbers are as high as they are imo. It's a good console imo, but Microsoft aren't exactly giving people many reasons to procure one and I don't think they care.

Sega with their last console had bad sales but at least it still had plenty of musthave exclusives us core gamers loved to play, xbox got fricken nothing...

It truly is unbelievable, it's like it's almost deliberately.. Smfh
The hardware drop is deliberate to an extent if the "30% profit margin requirement" rumors are true. I recall reading last year that Microsoft slowed down production because the actual economics of selling Xbox hardware is losing them money and killing the margins that Microsoft mandates from them.

So hypothetically the option was to keep pushing hardware, keep profits low, and daddy Satya get cranky and completely guts Xbox OR slow down hardware, focus on profits, and try to preserve what assets they do have, which is devlopers and games. They obviously chose the latter, but theyre still screwing that up considering the games quality and studio closures that are still happening yearly.

Who'd have thought selling a $500 console for $709 instead of having a Black Friday discount under $500 would collapse sales?!

I guess you missed the thread where it was pretty unanimous that the PS5 was the worst playstation. But you probably prefer a McDonald's Big Mac over an In-n-Out Double Double.

66% in that thread say PS5 is the worst PS, but that isn't unanimous and that isn't talking about sales. This is and it is hardly the worst generation for PlayStation in that regard.

Everybody is struggling, but Xbox has simply given up. On Black Friday 2018, Microsoft discounted its consoles by $100. This year, they haven't done anything. In fact, they've made two price increases.

Everyone is struggling because everything is more expensive these days. In 2018, the PS4 was sold for $199. This time, the Black Friday PS5 price was the same as its launch price in 2020. Trump really screwed Americans in a way nobody expected.
So nobody else is screwed, just Americans?

Estimates for November are around 100-150k
I don't know why they actually bother reporting this? What did they expect a Christmas surge? It was more than obvious the sales were tanking and they will continue to do so in 2026...the next box won't fare much better in anyway, especially due to the lack of exclusives...

Fanboys need to face reality. It's not just Xbox that's declining.

No, it's not just Xbox, ALL video game console sales are massively down year-over-year — and it's going to get worse

I hate to rehash an image I posted only 10 days ago, but…

There is cause for concern with Sony's and Nintendo's declines but the key difference between their declines and Microsoft's is that Sony and Nintendo's last 13 fiscal quarters of hardware sales don't look like this :

Sony and Nintendo's drops are due to a combination of global economic conditions and market saturation. Xbox's precipitous drop is due the complete, sustained failure of the brand (and its leadership).

Down 70% yoy, damn. Granted, PS5 was down 40%. But 70%, following two other yoy declines. Ouch.

But hold on... That means people are still buying Xboxes!

Why?

Yeah, that's hard to figure. Here are a few guesses:

1. These are numbers from the US, Xbox's strongest territory. "Xbox" still has brand recognition here, especially among casuals.

2. Many people do not keep up with the industry the way we do. They may be unaware of the exclusivity issue, GP price hikes, Amy Hood's 30% profit decree, or the general downward momentum of the console. A lot of the negativity about Xbox you hear around here hasn't filtered down to the casual audience. They just don't pay that much attention.

3. Is the Series S still the cheapest next-gen console available? I haven't kept up with all the prices, but if it is, that would make it appealing to parents with tight budgets shopping for a gift. (edit: nm, same price)

Misery loves company. Seems a number of people are reveling in the thought of the entire console industry failing because of the demise of Xbox.
Every single time. You can pretty much guarantee, it will be former Xbox psychos regurgitating it.

Right now, PS5 DE and XSS are the same price in the US: $399.

I'm sure they'll get it right next console gen. The company that is a penny pincher on their employees will gladly lose more money on hardware for another generation after going third party.

Great point.

I think they key data would be November 2024 hardware numbers and if they were up or down vs Nov 2023.

I just have a suspicion that these numbers seem a little worse than they actually are.

Like I suspect Xbox is down from a slump and Sony is down from a high. Those would be two very different things. I don't know this for sure though because I haven't researched the bolded data above.

Only Nintendo is not giving an inch to Steam. Xbox has already almost given up and Sony is somehow on its way to exiting the console business as they are pushing their customers to the much better Steam ecosystem.

Spending is down drastically in the US year over year due to the situation with the economy. In Europe the ps5 had a record breaking sales month. So no, it's more of a US issue.

At this point, I can only assume that anyone walking into a store today and walks out with an Xbox doesnt know that they're been porting their titles to other consoles, that this $650 Series X in your hand today was literally $500 last year, and you're not into PC.

Because I'm not smart enough to understand why anyone '* remotely* tuned into industry happenings the last 5 years would think buying an Xbox console at * this* point is a sound consumer choice.

Today's the day Xbox is saved!

The absolute irony of using a Cowboys endzone.

- Be one of the most valuable companies/teams
- Spend a whole lot of money on ill-advised acquisitions whether it be a big studio/publisher or a free agent/trade
- Fanbase vehemently insist that this is the year their team/corporation will make noise
- Proceed to get easily bounced by their competition
- Wash, rinse, repeat

Kids who misbehaved will get an Xbox, instead of a piece of coal.

As a young kid I would have killed for a console with that many games via Gamepass.

At that time I had SNES and later N64 with getting a new game ~3months. Literally played some games 10 times, because I had nothing new to play.

They've had no big titles at all this year though. No Halo, Gears and the only Forza was a PS5 port.
