What are you doing today?

I know people that have 20 years and fell off but they are working on a few years now.

It happens I know that.

What happened? Hopefully you don't beat yourself up over it. 6 years is impressive and you should be proud of that.

Congrats on 6 years!

Give yourself a break, we all fall down sometimes, you can still continue you dry journey

Thanks. The whole me staying dry was a personal choice. I just got sick of hangovers, so I thought I would nip it in the bud before it became a problem. As Billy Connelly once said, it's always better to stop when it's your own idea and not to be told by people to stop.

Nothing in particular happened. Just got an itch to go have a few pints. They just hit me like a tonne of bricks though.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I am battling a weed addiction and I haven’t had a hit in months. I was at an event in SF yesterday and it smelled like weed everywhere which triggered something in me. When I got back home I started sniffing the old jar in which I used to keep my weed until I felt pathetic and stopped. Fuck weed and weed culture.

Congratulations on making it to six years pauljeremiah pauljeremiah . Just remember the disgusting feeling of the hangover and why you are done with the habit.

Oh, I'm sure I will in the morning and it will probably be a nice reminder for the next few years.

you're better than me because I wouldn't even have admitted it! you're on the right track my friend.

I get people at my bar occasionally that are breaking long sobriety spells. With almost ten years under my belt it always puzzles me but I serve em with a smile. I'll never drink again, I don't think I would survive it.

Do not be beating yourself up. At all. Progress isn’t linear. You’re an absolute champ for holding off for six years by your own accord. Stay strong, my guy.

Don't beat yourself up. It happens. The fact you went cold turkey is a strong testimony!

Have a Sprite (helps with hangovers and morning sickness the night before) and be proud of the fact it's been 6 years.

I heard hangovers were a sodium dificiency. Drank a glass of water laced with salt before sleep once at Christmas.

Definitely don't do that, the look of shock when I was doing it on peoples faces including an even worse one the next morning was something else.

Didn't work. Then again I threw several shots into my eyeball that year, complete mistake. Was aiming for the mouth yet hitting my eye. Best thing the drink was called "Aftershock". Well, lived up to it's name. Family fell about laughing, I could barely see going back down the stairs in the morning for food. I guess it lived up to it's name.

I should have learned my lesson then. More power to ya bro.

EDIT: added image of said drink;

I always thought weed wasn't addictive until I started smoking regularly. Its really hard to stop and I hardly get the psychoactive effects...

Damn I can't even multiquote while sober.

I just passed 3 years. Keep your head. Don’t lose yourself and you’ll be all right. But obviously there’s a risk here. You need to be honest with yourself. No one here likely knows you well enough to give you real advice beyond the generic stuff.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Did you fall off the wagon, or did you have a few drinks? Those aren't the same thing.

titles says it all.

That's impressive to go that far and I know that feeling.

Was on that wagon for 18 months then fell off September '19. COVID then made it hard to get back on.

Been dialing back the last two months and getting back on Monday.

Edit: Also funny because I fell off in Ireland.

6 years is just a number. Definitely something you should be proud of, but it’s important to remember you’re doing this presumably to lead a healthier lifestyle, not break a record. As long as you’re committed and get back on track that’s all that matters. We all make mistakes.

Used to get drunk everyday for over 10 years, then one day I decided to sober up. Stayed that way for 1 1/2 years, then I decided it would be ok to drink on the weekends. I stayed true to that but the hangovers were killing me, lasting more than 2 days, I started going back to being reclusive, since I hated talking to people when I would have the shakes hard. Eventually, I figured out that if I limit myself and don't drink 20+ shots on friday and another 20+ shots saturday but instead drink only 6 shots on friday and 6 on saturday, that worked out pretty well and I was able to fit drinking back into my life in a responsible way and still able to keep a social life. Moderation, for me anyway, seems to be the key; maybe it's the same for you? Just don't over do it.
Who the fuck drinks shots on a night out? You a teenager? Seriously though drinking shots is just fucking stupid no wonder you had rough hangovers...

I couldn't get through a weekend without a few cold beers at the end of the day when the kids clear off to bed, I enjoy em and now actively seek out differing more expensive pale ales or imported lagers, good movie, fire on and a few cold beers is a perfect Saturday nite for me now, moderation is the key and I don't drink to get drunk I drink to get buzzed

I hate it when people glorify that drug. Saying it's healthy or not addictive is just stupid. Once the laughing stops and you smoke it like other people smoke cigarettes, you turn into a mindless zombie.

pauljeremiah pauljeremiah don't beat yourself up. 6 years are really impressive. You'll be alright!

Yeah, that makes two of us. 15 years or so, but i won't touch it again it nearly killed me. OP you seem to have it under control, it was just a small relapse and as long as you don't continue it, you should be fine.

The record is nice and all, but it doesn't really matter. All that matters is that it doesn't become a problem. You don't have to drink again.

Ideally you'd be able to drink occasionally, but it may be best to try and go dry again. Only you know if you can do that though.

Battling addiction should be forward looking.
Not “I’ve been/was sober for X amount of time” but instead “I will be sober Today”

I'm not saying to two are comparable but I coach people in making healthier dietary choices so that they can achieve fitness and health related goals. Often when someone slips up on a plan, they snowball and they get so down on themselves that they quit and give up on their goals. It's all about consistency and getting back on the horse when you fall off. 6 years is amazing. It took alot of discipline and consistency. Now you just have to admit you are human and get back on that horse.

It can be for some people. Be like saying "I don't smoke anymore" and then having a few smokes and it lights a fire in your body for craving.

Was with a woman that was addicted (never realised that was possible but here you mix joints with tobacco) and only quit after her going to group meetings for addicts. Didn't help that I was buying in bulk off her ex-boyfriends brother. I found it hard to stop myself and smoked very little anyway but I was a smoker and her bravery had me cancel everything despite losing a ton of money. (Well money for frivalous things, like beer and takeaways).

She must be a decade off and was a massive weed smoker, still smokes cigarettes though like a chimney.

I’m kinda in a similar boat, I haven’t touched drugs until this year, I was always against it, but I decided to give delta 8 edibles and now delta 9 edibles a try and I’ve been getting stoned with my wife at least 4 days a week after work. It’s partially me just catching up, but at the same time I kinda want to stop and I feel it’s going to become an issue lol

I don't like beer and also beer takes too long to get me buzzed.

What I was really referring to was alcohol withdrawal, which is something you get from beer or vodka or whatever form of alcohol you consume, makes no difference to your body.

I don't think what you are referring to is alcohol withdrawal either. Withdrawal symptoms typically occur when you are physiologically addicted to alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal can be fatal if not medically monitored. The DT's are no fun, I had to be medically detoxed several times during my drinking career.

Yes, the mixing with tobacco makes it even worse because then you have the nicotine devil chasing you, as well.

You made a mistake OP, time to start over again. Forgiving yourself and going forward is the right step as synchronicity synchronicity mentioned above. No use dwelling on what happened when you can't change it.

Everyone's relationship with alcohol is a very personal thing, everyone tolerates alcohol in varying degrees based on personality and genetics, there is no one-size-fits-all opinion or stance to take. I guess that's not much but that's all I can really say. Maybe OP is good with a drink now and then, maybe it's his downfall, the spectrum is wide.

Everybody talking about going years sober and here’s me who drinks pretty much daily to stem the utter boredom of existence. I truly have no idea how anyone could get through life without booze 😂

Wouldn’t it just be easier and more tasty to eat a bowl of ramen?

One missed day over the course of six years is close enough to six years that nobody knows the difference. Just subtract a day from your streak and keep going from there, you should keep being proud of what you’ve done and what you’re going to continue
