In 2025 there is still just as many active PS4's than there are Xbox Series consoles in homes. PS4 will be 12 years old in November.

123 million monthly active users with 80.2 million PS5's shipped that means over 43 million is coming from PS3 , PSP , Vita , PS4 & Portal

Mostly PS4 because Sony said PS5 just overtook PS4 active users in the last year or so .

Let that sync in

PS4 managed to dominate Xbox Series consoles for what seems to be their whole generation even though Sony clipped the PS4's wings to focus on PS5 production.

Has any other console had a 2 generation lifespan like this? I know PS2 sold 60 million after Xbox 360 launched but I'm not sure how active PS2 users were in 2011 - 2012.

Of course it does, PS4 sold 38M units on the later phase of its lifecycle (from April 2018 to March 2022), which is more than what the Xbox Series has sold so far.

1 - PS4 is a good console overall
2 - Huge player base
3 - Consoles are getting fucking expensive
4 - Playstation 4 games are getting a fucking discount on anywhere, at least the physical media
5 - Dualshock still is a great joystick you can get for both PC and PS4 and PS5, is not as expensive as Dualsense

Interesting...80M shipped PS5's doesn't necessarily mean PS5s make up 80M of their 123M active users (could be less, meaning more users are on Sony's older platforms), and it's hard to tell what the mix of PS3/PSP/Vita/PS4/Portal users is, but I bet you're not far off on your estimate. Where there are more people still playing PS4 than there are Xbox Series' collecting dust/being played.

HW "power" (idk what are you implying here with outdated other than that) has shit to do with active user player base, PS4 library has a huge list of banger games
Depends what kind of playerbase this is. People who care about performance, it'd be weird af if they're still on a system that can't handle anything even at a stable 30fps.

I know that's why I said over 43 million & pointed out that PS5 just recently overtook PS4 active user-base .

PS4 was the last great console. PS4 PRO was the last loudest console. :)
Seriously PS4 did everything right.
Then the PS5 tripped on the rug and spilled the chili on the rug. A big stain on the floor that can't be cleaned up. :(

Actually, Series X and S have barely sold 30M consoles. If there's 43 million people actually playing on PS4 every month...that's a huge difference right there.

PS4 is a jurgonnaut and when you think about it, it is by far the console with the biggest lifetime in history. Imagine a console releasing in 2013 and still getting this many games 12 years later

Not surprising considering that the majority of the most played games are still available on PS4, and the PS4 was a resounding success (edit: point being that there are a shit ton of PS4's in homes across the world.)

It's crazy to think if you still are playing on a PS4 12 yesrs later, you have virtually missed nothing at this point not having a PS5 or a Series.

Which is why the cross gen period next gen will be even longer.
Between rising costs, diminishing returns in visuals and live service games benefiting from having a large active userbase (thus not being in a rush to drop support on last gen), a lot of people are still perfectly happy on last gen.

Seriously, it's just great.
I have airplanes flying over my house (I live close to the airport) that are quieter.
But I still love the PS4.

I'm still one of those with PS4 pro hooked up and no PS5 yet. Hell, I still keep my PS3 hooked up to a downstairs TV. Granted, I use PC more than consoles lately. My next purchase will be the Switch 2, and I may just wait until PS6 launches.

How so? If the performance of everything running on the system is extremely low, why would you waste your time on it?
Casual console base has never cared about this. A lot of them still don't know what the term 'framerate' even means. They call a higher framerate 'smooth' and a lower framerate 'lag'.

And they prefer cheap.

Same year with PS4:
Obama start up second phase of POTUS
iPhone 5s released
Microsoft buy out Nokia's mobile division
GTA5 released
Imagine Dragon was on top of cereer

My daughter still uses her PS4 for Netflix etc… (why I don't know as it's built into her tv 😑) so she will be one of those active users. (She early uses it for games)

I'd say the last greatest generation was x360/PS3. There were so many unique console games and developers still dated to try new experimental releases.

PS4 and XO felt more like mini PCs in regards of gaming. And the current generation even moreso
