In 2025 there is still just as many active PS4's than there are Xbox Series consoles in homes. PS4 will be 12 years old in November.

Yeah, there aren't many people on GAF who are still on PS4 and haven't upgraded to PS5 yet, but in the general population, it's very common.
Not having upgraded is one thing, but maining a playstation, and not having upgraded is completely different. If you main a pc, and barely use your PS on the side, of course an upgrade to the ps5 is almost pointless, especially this generation where Sony doesn't release anything. But when you have a Sony system as your main gaming platform, you can't do shit with a ps4 anymore. Not to mention that plenty of titles aren't even on it, and this ain't improving in the future.

You're upset about facts even Sony said PS5 is just recently over taking PS4 active user-base

You came up with the stupid AAA stuff just to have a dumb argument.

I'm not upset about anything, does my avatar make it look like I get butthurt at Sony's success?

I have acknowledged a couple of times that PS4 has tens of millions of active users - but they're not buying new games. Sorry that goes against your surface level analysis. It's people using it for media and kids on live services.

Imagine thinking that using AAA releases to indicate the health of ecosystem is a dumb argument. This isn't a forum for retards kiddo.

You have expressed shock that so many people would still be on PS4 before upgrading to PS5.

You have proceeded to walk us through several scenarios that might prevent a large number PS4 owners from converting to PS5 owners.

You are still shocked.

Reaching for the AAA argument with a 12 year old system proves you're out of touch with reality.

This would be the time that the system becomes the budget choice if Sony wouldn't have slowed the production to fully focus on PS5.

PS4 users still being active is a big part of the reason this is PlayStation's most profitable generation. The transitioning period is usually when they start to lose money because of the higher manufacturing & production cost of the new generation but they stayed well above water this time around.

I would be shocked if those numbers were for NA. There's no chance that they're. Hard to be shocked when those with a ps4, can't upgrade.

PS4 was the last great console. PS4 PRO was the last loudest console. :)
Seriously PS4 did everything right.
Then the PS5 tripped on the rug and spilled the chili on the rug. A big stain on the floor that can't be cleaned up. :(
80.2M sold and over 100M within a year or so. I'd say PS5 is perfectly fine. PS6 may be in danger if Sony's going to do something stupid, like go full 3rd party like Xbox, but we'll see what happens.

PS4 Pro is still in use for me today, as I skipped the PS5 generation...PlayStation 6 maybe the first Sony console I get since the Pro, seeing as Xbox doesn't have anything in terms of staying power (apart from the B.C side) and the fact that the next Mass Effect, Forza, Halo will be on Sony's console anyway...

I'm more shocked you still struggle to understand it. In what kind of bizzarre universe you live to think there aren't many people who doesn't give a fuck to performance issues.

Yep. My best friend of forever - who Isn't a forum goer or even a social media user - still only has a PS4 Pro and hasn't felt the need or desire to upgrade. The only thing he complains about "missing out on" is Astro Bot and Stellar Blade but those alone haven't made it worth his while to spend the money on a PS5 or PS5 Pro.

Edit:

They're not buying new games for it now because cross-Gen finally came to an end just this past year. IIRC, this is the first year where all major annual sports game franchises finally leave PS4 behind so "new" games releasing have reached their end. Several of Sony's tentpole franchises came out in the cross-Gen period. Aforementioned friend bought and played Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7 at launch on PS4 Pro — and it's increasingly likely that none of those games will see PS5 only sequels until the end of this generation or during the cross-Gen window of the next.

Understand and accept a delusional take are two different things. And it's bizzarre that you're still pushing it.

If what you're saying was true, they would have mentioned NA and EU, but they didn't because in most countries that are in those regions, people can upgrade to newer systems.

The only delusional it's you if you think they are all in Brazil lol. And why you even insist with such bizzarre theory. I mean you are free to believe whatever you want but call delusional who argue there are many valid explanations behind it, it's really something else.

Brazil is a good example because it's a known fact. And gaming is also huge in Brazil, something you didn't even know, but is arguing.

1 - PS4 is a good console overall
2 - Huge player base
3 - Consoles are getting fucking expensive
4 - Playstation 4 games are getting a fucking discount on anywhere, at least the physical media
5 - Dualshock still is a great joystick you can get for both PC and PS4 and PS5, is not as expensive as Dualsense

+PS4 still gets new game releases on the regular.

I got GoW 3 remastered for R$29,90 on Lojas Americanas, while GoT PS5 version was like R$399,90.

There are decent deals here in Brazil for physical media, either online or in a shop.

I can see people here either staying on PS4 or even buying a new PS4.

One of them is me. I probably will upgrade in the not too distant future, but haven't done so yet.

I did a survey not too long ago, asking whether anyone here still played exclusively on last-gen consoles (PS4 or Xbox One). There were a handful of people who chimed in, so you're not alone.

My favorite reply:

No because GAF is for elites and upper class only. We don't allow disgusting poor people here.

lol

A fact based on what data? Never read that all ps4 actually actives are only in poorest countries, you arguing just solely following your personal oversemplified convinction lol think only poorest people play on ps4 today is really asinine and almost insulting.

PS4 is still a great console and a very valid option if you're a welfare scrub.

Otherwise play on PS5/Pro like someone who has a job. Enjoy the better performance of those PS4 games you get on the buy 2 take 3 deal at the flea market.

Ok so we have a live example on gaf. Good.

Few questions😊Is the PS4 your primary system, or do you mainly play games on something else? How many hours a week do you play games? And what kind of games were you playing, let's say in 2025?

Answers below!

Is the PS4 your primary system, or do you mainly play games on something else? - I'd classify both my PS4 and Switch as the primary platforms, with PC being tertiary. Some months I play the Switch more and others I play the PS4 more. Depends on what game I'm currenty playing and how much I'm travelling.

How many hours a week do you play games? - I'd say somewhere between 15 and 25 hours, but it can vary quite a bit by week.

And what kind of games were you playing, let's say in 2025? - I'd classify them into three categories:

  • Online multiplayer - Ghosts of Tshushima, Age of Mythology remake and Deep Rock Galactic
  • Local multiplayer when people come round - Switch Sports, FIFA, Timesplitters 3, Mario Kart/Party
  • Working through my backlog - Jedi Survivor, God of War Valhalla, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, the STALKER trilogy and Titanfall 2

AAAs are literally not "the bedrock of a thriving ecosystem", the most successful ecosystems on the market (Steam, Switch) haven't done so off the back of AAA blockbusters
Wow, way to make a dumb thread even more stupid. 80% of Nintendo's software revenue was from 1st party releases, pretty sure it's their games which keep the Switch afloat not 3rd party indies.

Oh and yea Steam definitely doesn't depend on AAA 🙄 https://store.steampowered.com/sale/bestof2024

I'm sure Sony is making way more money off the random indies and retro ports still going to PS4 than it is Monster Hunter Wilds and Battlefield 6.

You're the one who tried to claim PS4 was just as relevant as Xbox Series - sorry that I pointed out video game developers feel otherwise.

Yea it came to an end because the sales are so weak. Even in the first year of PS5 we were seeing breakdowns of like 75/25% and that reached under 10% last year. Tony Hawk just sold 5% of launch units on PS4 in the UK and no doubt that version will have the weakest legs.

Something is clearly wrong with you.

The topic is about the active user-base you keep trying to change it into something else just to have a dumb argument.

The ps4 start of the gen yes... End of the gen no... By the 2019 my launch ps4 sounded like a jet engine. By 2020 it would heat the room 15 to 20f after an hour or so. So much that it became a pain to play. This was apparently a common issue. If not for that and divisive releases like tlou2, or not supporting days gone and the order 1886 then I would agree.

Ps5 though has been shit exclusive wise and really great hardware wise. It plays all my ps4 content wisper quiet. No takeoff and heat up the room bs going on there.

As for best console, for me it's been the switch and now switch 2, but that's another discussion.

Honestly I own hundreds of games on PS4 and the same on Xbox One (around 700/800 if I cumulate both). I know some guys who told me it's ok to play with a generation gap. I tried it (after playing 3 years on XSX/PS5) and... It's OK ? Nowadays I'm kind of tired of "FOMO" that I see everywhere here and in other "gamers forums". Games are games, I recently replayed (100%) of the first 3 Donkey Kong Country games, they're awesome.
I'm not a gamer who needs 4K DLSS3 120FPS to enjoy a game, that's absolutely not what I search in a game.

So honestly... That's not a problem. The current generational gap (PS4 to PS5) is the smallest ever, barrely noticable for most games (yes) so... Yes owning, or buying a PS4 in 2024 is great.

Death stranding 2
Astro bot
Baldurs gate 3
Expedition 33
Split ficiton
Hell divers 2
Spiderman 2
Black myth wukong
Kingdom come deliverance 2
Returnal
Ratchet and clank rift apart

Plus everything that was crossgen runs much better on PS5. Going from 30fps to 60fps for almost all videogames was amazing. Even games like Genshin, Fortnite, etc are just top notch on PS5.
