In The Dark Knight, would it have been better if Katie Holmes stayed on as Rachel?

There's a deleted scene where he does exactly that and leaves by van.

This would be a still from it I think

:( the only thing i hate about nolans joker and TDK movie is their wasnt enough of him... the movie needed about 10-20 minutes more of joker...

I didn't like Maggie's delivery of her first few lines (when she's walking and talking with Harvey Dent) and it just gave me a bad first impression to this day.

Gyllenhaal was underwhelming and had no chemistry with her romantic interests, but a lot of that comes from how poorly written her character was in TDK.

I very much disliked Maggie Gyllenhaal. I thought she was awful and that her character in the movie was generally awful. Should've died a lot sooner in the movie.

Katie Holmes would've provided consistency, and that's enough for me to have preferred her to remain in the role.

I would have preferred Katie Holmes again. Maggie's portrayal of Rachel was grating, it was hard to believe Batman or Dent would want her.

I think Nolan generally struggles to write good material for women in his movies. Carrie-Anne Moss' character in Memento is probably one of the few exceptions.
That is pretty much true. Even in The Prestige the women are pretty much throwaway characters who are barely peripheral to the two main leads.

Yes, I do think it would have been best if Katie stayed.

I couldn't see Maggie as Rachel as Katie had already played her. Didn't work with continuity in the same story.

Just like I still can't look at Don cheadle in the role of Rhodey in the iron man/avengers movies when I know it should be Terrence Howard there continuing the role. Just damages the consistency.

The character was worse than Vicky Vale or Dr.Chase Meridian. That says a lot. No actress could salvage that POS writing.

Also when Harvey Dent has more chemistry with Bruce Wayne, you know something went wrong in the writing/casting stage.

20-40 minutes of him in transpo for sure. Just to show how he was making his way around this city. It was a gaping plot hole at the very least.

Sexist an generally stupid comments aside, whatever, but I cannot let this comment slide

I don't think either of them are especially good actresses. Although, Maggie Gyllenhaal has gotten better. Her brother as well...I smell a conspiracy.

The Honourable Woman, breh ...

I wish her character was replaced by Tommy Elliot instead and he and Bruce could have drunken lad nights out together.
And set up a much better final film.

The completely unintentional comic timing when she says "Everything's going to be alr-" then gets turned into barbecue 2 seconds later would still remain.

As would Eckhart's unintentionally hilarious "RACHELLLLL RACHELLL RACCCCCHEEEELL AAAAAAAAAH"

Maggie is the better actress but I would have preferred Katie in the role for the sake of continuity.

With the benefit of hindsight, I also think the Harvey Dent character should have been in BB too, even in a small role as Bruce's friend.

Yes. Katie Holmes is bad, but it would've been consistent, and the girl was getting blown up halfway through the movie anyways.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is not the actress you get to portray a love interest that a dashing District Attorney and a Billionaire fight over.
This. That was the most jarring part.

Maggie was especially bad in TDK, her whole interrogating the guy who was good with numbers scene was awful. Nothing Holmes did in Begins was as bad as what Maggie did.

So yeah, they should of kept Katie.

Are you Michael Bay or some hollywood casting director ?

That's such a sexist remark. I dont find Maggie very attractive , but she's also not unattractive. Bruce Wayne isnt a billionaire fighting over some beautiful maiden . He has affection for the friend whom he grown up with and knows his true face. Harvey works with her , generating a normal bond between them.

She's a good actress. She acts confident , trustful , yet unable to believe that Bruce will ever stop being Bat's . She does a good job.

Yeah my brain doesn't accept it. Her behaviors totally different in TDK. I also would have felt more sting seeing her with Harvey Dent while Bruce couldn't be with her. But alas I'm like "who fucking cares bruce, we've never seen that girl in our life".

Nah. The new Rachel's sold Joker's insanity well.

That part did work well. She really felt at a loss for words. But then Bruce saving Katie Holmes Rachel would have felt more at stake the "then you'll love me'.

Very true just doesn't look good enough.

Nah. The role was pretty weakly written in both films I thought but Maggie at least brought some acting chops and tried to force life into the character. Holmes tried too but doesn't have the acting chops to make nearly as much of an impression.

Honestly though the role was really written in both more as a narrative and thematic device vs an actual character. Meryl Streep couldn't have done much with it in her prime IMHO.

Wish katie would have stayed on. Pigface is a horrible actress. Series ended on a wimper anyway.

WTF?

Anyways, both women are quality actors and would have been fine playing the role in either of the movies. The problem was the role itself - just more damsel in distress BS. Women aren't trophies to be fought over. Shame that such an otherwise fine movie decided to reinforce that stupid trope.

"Mad Money" always sounded like a PR excuse, she probably wasn't coming back regardless because of how unhappy certain people supposedly were with her performance on top of what happened when she was on the Begins promotional tour.

Katie Holmes had better chemistry with Bale.

But I think it would've been best if Maggie was in BB instead so there was no actor switcheroo, the onscreen chemistry wasn't all that important in the end.

Maggie was a better actress but Katie had better chemistry with Bale. Maggie also didn't really mesh with Eckhart either. I think I would have preferred Katie back.

No, he's spot on. Pointing out that someone isn't attractive and doesn't fit a role doesn't make you a sexist.

Tangentially, doesn't the men cast in superhero movie usually has better chemistry between each other anyway? Especially since most of the important roles are usually men heavy, except for the token love interest role.
