In The Mood For An RPG

alright guys, here's the deal. im not one for RPGS. infact, i've only played about a handfull or so, and have beaten about 2.

for reference, these are it....

Chrono Cross - didn't beat it. stopped playing about 4 hours in. seemed to have a really great battle system though.

Skies of Arcadia - was enjoying it a lot, but about 20 hours in, my file got corrupted, so i just gave up.

Final Fantasy VII - beat it. thought it was a cool game. nothing special.

Paper Mario - excellent game. plan on playing GameCube one some day.

Mario & Luigi - yet, another excellent game, but my ex took it back so that was the end of that.

so here's the deal. im totally craving a turn based game. i was gonna go with Fire Emblem (yeah i know it's not an RPG) cause i played about half of it and it fuckin rocked, but, i want something that's more than one on one battles (hence, why i want an RPG and not just getting Fire Emblem again).

oh, i played the FFI&II remakes on GBA, and didn't think much of them, and not really in the mood to play though Mario & Luigi at the moment.

anyways, i was hoping you guys could make some suggestions based on what you know. oh, and im talking GBA RPGs here since im gonna want it to be portable.

Yeah, you really should go with Fire Emblem ;). Or Skies of Arcadia: Legends.

Its kind of funny that you've played half way through the two best rpgs this gen.
Also give FFVIII a try. If you can surivive the PSX graphics (which it seems you can) you'll realize its one of the best JRPGs ever made.

i guess you could go golden sun, i though it was fun/ ok. Some people give it some hate but.

Not a bad idea if you get the sequal Golden Sun: The Lost Ages instead. Much better than Golden Sun.
 
Though you've given your requirements for it to be a GBA game, I'd heartily recommend Paper Mario, you'll adore the GC incarnation.

Oh and no RPG request post can be complete without Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter pimping!

Now, as for serious GBA RPG recommendations... I'd have to say either Fire Emblem (yes I know you mentioned it already and it's not an RPG), FF I.II: Dawn of Souls (which you aren't keen on) or Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, which is yet another SRPG instead of RPG.

Unfortunately, GBA doesn't seem to have a horde of great ENGLISH RPGs that I can think of offhand, which is a shame.

OH SHIT! I totally forgot (and was summarily reminded by someone in an angry tone): POKEMON!

Seriously the new ones rock (ruby/sapphire and fire red/leaf green). Emerald is coming out soon and is the epitome evidently of the RuSa series.
 
guys guys guys, like i said, im not one for RPGs. whenever i play one, it's cause im craving turn based gameplay. if im gonna play anything on a console at this point, it's gonna be Paper Mario GC or gonna give Skies another shot.

but like i said, im being very strict on it being a GBA RPG. so seriously, don't waste both our times by recommending console games. i mean, if you guys want to talk about how great they are, make a therad for them. don't mean to come off as an asshole, but yeah, thanks.

Or just get both Breath of Fires for old skool SNES action. (you can run on the world screen!)

Combat in Baldur’s gate in Real time game like a strategy game but you can pause with spacebar anytime to strategize. Trust me there is A LOT of strategy in this game.

To be honest, there aren't that many great GBA RPGs IMO :/ - you've already played my 2 favorites. That said, as someone mentioned, the newer Pokemons might really be the best pick. The battle system's good and the newer ones have multiple characters in a battle.

Screw GBA Rpg’s they suck, you need to play the classics.

*Sheds a tear for Bioware.
 
Demi mentioned it earlier, but I would like to mention it again. Phantasy Star Collection on GBA is great. You get PS 1-3 and they are all excellent titles. They each have their own unique feel and the games are emulated perfectly. You can't go wrong with Fire Emblem or Golden Sun 1 & 2.

I seriously think Golden Sun is what you are looking for, it has multiple character turn based battles, and the animations for spells and summons and whatnot is phenomenal.

edit: the way I understood it you wanted to have more than one character per battle screen, I did not understand that you wanted multiple characters on a battle field like thing. Maybe what you should try is Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced? I can't recommend it because I haven't played it yet.
 
Having played and completed every English GBA RPG out there (yes including the dismal Lufia and Lunar rips).. here are my own two cents.

Play through Fire Emblem first. Of course it's a strategy RPG but it totally kicks arse no matter what and easily one of the better games on GBA itself.

Next I'd go for both Golden Sun's. Don't bother to buy one or the other since essentially they game is complete by playing through both.. will only take you 40-50 hrs or so if you rush through like I did.

Then you can always plunk down for some Breath of Fire love but the translations still suck arse even to date.

If you want to go through for FFT-A or Tactics Ogre, you may as well stick to the original FFT on PS1 and go for Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together on SNES (J) or PS1. Both GBA sequels weren't that great dialogue, story and character wise.

Any other RPG or self-proclaimed S-RPG can go escape into a black hole somewhere.

but, i will be picking up Golden Sun along with it. now, as far as that goes, from what i've read, part 2 is better in every way, but continues where part 1 ended. so where do you guys recommend that i start?

oh oh oh, and those Phantasy Star II pics definitely piqued my interest. has some great style there. i might pick that up anyways just because it's so cheap.

Start from the first, since then you'll know who the heck the characters are, wtf is the storyline so warped from the get go and why on earth you are using this weird magic system. The first is the shortest by far of the two, I clocked up just under 20 hours on my first run. The other part is if you finished the 1st, you can import your stats, etc to the sequel so you won't lose any of those good items you found.
 
excellent news. my friend has both and he's just gonna loan them to me. so i'll just play the shit out of them assuming i dig them.

so i take it playing through both is about 50 hours-ish then?
 
well it depends on if you want to do sidequests like fight optional dungeons/bosses, get all the djinns (stat boosters and what you use for summons) things of that nature.

And I would suggest playing Golden Sun before playing Golden Sun: The Lost Ages, it was fun as hell playing the second game and running into the characters you played in the first game, and it was a great plot device in my opinion that the two groups were working towards opposing goals.
