Indie Games 2014 [July] Now Voting - Post 430!

So I'm up to Chapter 4 of Chronology and I have to concur with Toma, this is a great puzzle platformer. The art style is lush and colorful, and it doesn't get old watching the environment shift through time

The time mechanic is really cool, both visually and mechanically. It's reminiscent of Braid, but with its own twist of the time control. Bringing objects through time, manipulating the past and future versions of equipment and structures, and stopping time with your Snail buddy, makes for some interesting unique puzzles. The platforming is pretty solid as well.

I'm definitely eager to play more.

Make sure to post your impressions after you spend more time, probably I'm not going to understand nothing in the game if I play. xD

Strange, my laptop runs Windows 7 and it works. Are you using 32 bits or 64 bits?
64 bits

Isn't Chronology more like Giana Sisters?

I have no idea then, I believe your laptop specs are fairly similar to mine and it was working fine for me. Try to contact the developer after you're back from the vacancy.

Also, sending the log files from the game directory would probably help a lot if you do.

I have the same OS so it can't be that, works fine for me.

In Infinity Runner, the player controls the protagonist, the prisoner, from a first-person perspective as he is challenged to escape from the gargantuan spaceship. This is accomplished by use of techniques and movements inspired by the disciplines of parkour and mixed martial arts, the game-play conveys the players strain and physical contact with the environment whilst dealing with the constantly changing and expansive surroundings. As well as these evasive elements there’s also combat sections in the game where a dynamic targeting system is used which calls for fast reflex combinations.

I did shout loud enough 3 days ago! ;p

My backlog, anal retentiveness, and shame for my digital hording made me reticent. I'm finally starting to get a handle on my unsorted folder in Steam and I didn't want to fall off the wagon again. I'll now wallow in my own pity until the next sale...

Picked up The Nightmare Cooperative
If you go into this game expecting a grand and complicated experience, you'll probably be disappointed. The Nightmare Cooperative is a compact game, a roguelike distilled to its base elements. You won't find complex skill trees, or a multitude of loot to collect and equip, or expansive environments for you to explore and perish in. That's not a bad thing; if you're looking for something simple but challenging, simplified yet also strategic and tactical, The Nightmare Cooperative excels.

The set-up is simple, a framework for the action rather than an extended narrative. Your village is in disarray; go out, gather gold, fight monsters, survive. The core of The Nightmare Cooperative is its gameplay and that aspect proves to be much deeper and more engaging than the story.

If you've familiar with Michael Brough's 868-HACK, you'll feel right at home among Nightmare's enemy-filled rooms. Like 868, your goal here is to amass a high score, the amount of gold you collect equaling your final score. Opening chests rewards you with gold and spawns enemy so choosing whether to rush for the exit or increase your score is a crucial choice. Enemies move when you move so each step forward is a strategic decision that, when combined with the game's mechanics and varied foes, gives The Nightmare Cooperative a methodical, puzzle-esque vibe.

You don't control a single hero in Nightmare, but rather an entire group at once, each hero moving and using their special abilities simultaneously. Each hero is unique and positioning and formation is important since their abilities are only effective under certain conditions. The Archer can only shoot enemies directly ahead, the Mage can hit enemies on diagonals, the Swordsman can perform two strikes in one move, the Ninja can pass through enemies. Supplementing these abilities are items that provide stats boosts and perks, such as extra life at the expense of mana or not spawning enemies when opening a chest.

The enemies you face are equally varied and cement the game's strategic puzzle atmosphere. Some enemies patrol along defined predictable paths. Others mirror your movements or move extra spaces in a turn. Turrets rotate and fire in intervals. All this knowledge is always at your disposal and define how you position your heroes, which heroes are best for a given room. Managing four heroes at once, while timing and syncing your movements to evade enemies or get into formation to attack a desired enemy with a specific ability, is a satisfying challenge. It's best to approach each move in The Nightmare Cooperative slowly and carefully, taking the time to plan out your next steps, thinking about where you are and will be in relation to enemies and hazards. A poor decision can easily find your heroes scattered across a level, cornered, a beneficial move for one character being dangerous for the others.

The colorful distinct art style rounds out this compelling package. The Nightmare Cooperative is all about the gameplay, the turn-for-turn decisions that make the best roguelikes so satisfying. Those looking for something with more depth may find the game lacking, but the strategic gameplay, varied heroes, and one-more-go appeal makes The Nightmare Cooperative a worthy addition for fans of the genre.

The developers plan to add a challenge mode that will feature rooms with predetermined heroes, enemies, and layouts designed to test your strategic prowess. A mobile version is also in the works, with an estimate release time frame sometime later this year.

OP Impressions!

Pale
Interesting take on the exploration genre. Its just a small game, but the main mechanic works rather nicely. You get a limited amount of light sources and need to use them strategically to light the area around you, allowing you to find the way between the different "checkpoints". I found it interesting how I adjusted my line of thinking depending on the surroundings and amount of light sources I have left.

Pocket Robots Test Chamber
Some others wrote about it already, but its a very smart programming themed puzzle game with some clever puzzles and smart additions/variations. The presentation is a bit.. lackluster, but its a fun and very intelligent puzzle game. I bought the game for my mobile phone to play this on the go actually :) Simple rules, hard to master. Lovely.

QBEH
Not bad for a 3D puzzle game, but its missing the originality and wit I've come to expect from these games. Sorting around cubes to make platforms to jump on is neither original, nor interesting. I only played the prototype of this, but it didnt leave a strong impression. Replaying a level for 10 minutes because you cant hit a cube that you need to jump on is quite annoying, but even despite those issues, its competent enough for what it wants to be, just not good enough to warrant more play time unless someone else tells me that QBEH-1 does a 180° turn and became way more interesting.

Spectrum
Platforming puzzle game in which you need to explore a level, and use color beams to change your own properties, which in turn allows you to pass barriers for those specific colors. The game works (even though I just had my first Unity crash ever with that game), but I dont appreciate the way how the gameplay is set up. Look around the level, search for light sources, find a way in which you get from one light source to the next, open door, repeat. Its cute how they added some "stealth" elements basically, but the game might just not be for me, even though its technically sound.

Sub Commander
This game is incredibly intriguing, being basically a hardcore version of FTL with Roguelike ideas for a submarine simulator, including random events, fights and missions. While this sounds incredibly enticing, there is also quite a big barrier to actually start playing the game, and once you started playing the game, there isnt much... game there yet. You have tons of options on your boat, but no real goal/missions yet other than reach X, defeat Y, which "works" in itself and gives you reasons to take care of your boat, but it really needs more of an ingame guide to ease players into its mechanics. I really love the direction this is taking, but lets say I only call it "recommended" to dive into and experience a rare species of Indie games in which realism is king, not necessarily to play it though. After reading and playing around with it for 2 hours, I appreciate the direction, but it still needs more "game".

SubRay
Good underwater exporation game with shooting and light tactical elements. I love the art style and animations and the general gameplay. Unfortunately, the game crashed for me twice, so i needed to restart once and couldnt find enough motivation to play through the admittedly slow beginning again. Neat game in any case though, definitely one of those prototypes that would deserve a fully realized version with more content and less crashes.

Substratum
Interesting puzzle game in the vein of Starseed Pilgrim and Fjords in which you need to figure out direction and rules yourself, but less.. polished? The game doesnt seem to do a good job at informing the player what he can or cant do, but this game is way smarter than it seems at first with some interesting and VERY challenging puzzle mechanics. The game would definitely benefit from a better presentation, but this game is surprisingly good. One thing you need to remember though: You can definitely fuck up a level completely, and pressing reset will bring you back to the moment when you entered the screen. However, if you already changed screens, your fucked up solution might have been saved, in this case press the reset button multiple times.

Tales of Maj'Eyal
This game is, and I am not saying this lightly, the best roguelike I've ever played. I love these games, but the way the game is structured, how the mechanics come together, the incredibly satisfying loot improvement curve, the way how most characters play fundamentally different and just how much stuff there is to find and see... is mind boggling. The initial release was an older game, but its still frequently updated, so I'll just honor it by including it here again. The game is not super pretty and screenshots might not be overly convincing, but its fan-fucking-tastic. If you need a more in-depth writeup, there you go:

Thought that Halfway release date was an out-of-the-blue reveal?

Eidolon is releasing (fully releasing, not Early Access) on August 1st.

I am very much looking forward to all the impressions we'll see here before deciding whether to jump in too or not.

OP Impressions!

Ten Suns
A 3D action adventure in which a hero with his trusty bow sets out to fell the 10 sun gods after they have scorched the earth. Very evocative art style and setting due to every person being burned alive and their (voice acted) last breaths haunting you when you touch them. The game feels a tad restricted in how it only basically has one mob enemy type and you can only play until you defeat the first sun god, but they have the right ideas here. The game opens up with some hidden areas that are even somewhat tricky to find, the bow combat works, and they know how to make some interesting level design and boss fights. I'd love to throw some money at these guys and polish this some more and get this out on console. Seriously, would fit right in with the Playstation crowd, fantastic first concept/chapter. I contacted DigiPen to see whether these students are planning on expanding that project or not.

The Adventures of Space Jade
Surprisingly pretty sidescrolling adventure/jump&run game. Unfortunately, it has some baffling design decisions in its current version that make it rather frustrating to play: some unpredictable deaths, weird jumping physics,an incredibly awkward climbing/grabbing control scheme and level layouts/general gameplay feel that doesnt lend itself very well to replaying despite... trying to kill you with traps you need to time meticulously. Not a bad foundation, but needs more polish.

The Testament of the White Cypress
This is quite the peculiar thing. A top down tactical adventure roguelike in...crayon style, with skills, deep dialogue trees and all that. I am not particularly fond of the art style, but I'd play some more if the dev figures out a better control scheme, unresponsive and unintuitive as it is atm, I find myself drawn to other roguelike-style games I have more interest in atm. If anyone dives deeper into this, let me know.

The World Beneath
Funky, this is basically a more intricate version of Pale, which we also featured this month, a game in which you collect light sources and then use those light sources to inch forward inside a cave system. Where Pale was more about finding the correct path, The World Beneath has some almost metaphorical and ascetic elements to it while the player tries to explore the caves, listening to the fading sound of his torches, trying to move into the next part of the cavern before everything goes black. Minuspoints for creating scenarios from which you cant escape and need to restart the game, but very pleasant presentation.

Tobias and the Dark Sceptres
This is incredible endearing, you probably all know the story about this game and how he developed it for 13 years, which also shows in the gameplay itself and how the gameplay mechanics and animations get gradually more intricate as the game goes on (which is incredibly interesting to watch), but the game itself is actually good, partly because it feels like it rarely relies too much on some design constraints and just runs with whatever the dev found interesting at that point in time. I didnt expect to say this after I played the game for a while, but this game doesnt only have an interesting story, its actually worth playing. Of course its not a Mario game, and its missing Polish here and there, but I found myself surprised at having fun playing this. Highly recommended to check out for the complete package of backstory, game development and actual game design.

Vagante
I am not saying I didnt expect it to be good after the praise it got in this thread so far, but... blimey is this good. Basically a Spelunky style Action roguelike with loot, traps and several more interesting shenanigans that I dont want to spoil yet. Good controls, interesting level layout, good challenge, interesting sub systems.. this is a gem ladies and gentlemen. We definitely need to keep this on our radar and see how this develops. It might actually deserve its own thread, but I'll dwell on that a bit more after I played it a bit more over the next few days.

[**] Cant judge most gameplay yet as that evolves a lot, but for what it is, it definitely deserves and needs to be experienced.

This was an incredibly good month. I rarely had so many games I wanted to keep playing and I heartily recommend checking out all the games in my highly recommended category.. and some more.

Games I'll definitely go back to:

Tales, Crimsonland, Chronology, Vagante, Tobias, Pocket Robots, Hardline Gunner & Lantern Forge.

You have my sympathies.

I was about to say that dude is rather obnoxious, but its probably good for their sales. I wonder how much sell through you make through such a video, this vid had 200k views, even 1% of those buying the game would be 2000$ revenue which should be nice enough.

Why? Love or hate the guy this is huge exposure for us.

Whats the impact of such a video for your sales? Anything data you can share? Really curious.

Subray - I needed some time before getting used to the controls but once it clicked with me it went smooth. I pretty much liked every part of the game, the controls works great, the visual is interesting and the sounds sets the atmosphere for it.

Tales of Maj'Eyal - I think I talked something about this game in a previous thread, it's a great roguelike that is going to suck all of your time to play. GO. PLAY. IT.

We're experiencing our best day of sales and the video has only been up for like 5 hours. It's significantly less than the 200,000+ views he already has on the video, but it's ok so far. It's nowhere near the 2000 you proposed, but it's still our best day so far. It's also caused a 4% bump on our Greenlight page.

However, my Google Alerts also filled up with a ton of torrent listings for the game now.

So... lol

Actually forgot to add Lantern Forge in my list of games I'll keep playing, which reminds me: It has a free demo and only had impressions by me so far, just in case someone else is curious enough to write up some impressions.

Hmhmhm, not bad overall I guess. And kinda funky that you have the best sales and the most piracy on the same day, interesting how a single video will stir up a whole community to make that game readily available to be gotten for free via Torrents.

Yeah, but it makes sense. Despite some kind of decent coverage, I think we really weren't on anyone's radar. Also, it proves that people will pirate anything, even games that cost only one dollar. But I kind of knew that was a possibility going in haha

Well, neither the video, nor the description inform people that its only $1. I am pretty sure there is a sizeable amount of players that go directly to torrent size without checking for the cost of the game. Just hypothesizing, but might have helped if PewDiePie had made a shoutout in the beginning about the game being ridiculously cheap at $1.

I have a friend who was in the Navy and spent several years on subs. I showed him this game to see what he thought as he usually likes sim type stuff. From that perspective, he thought it was interesting and not too far of from reality. It was pretty easy for him to jump into from a mechanics aspect which I think says something about the quality of the sim side of things. He said a couple things were off like depths and speeds but otherwise thought it was "kinda cool" and accurate.

That is Super cool, thanks for asking. The dev probably has some navy background too and I'll just check on it again in a few months to see whether the games side of things improved.

They have, thanks :) We're currently experiencing our best day of sales that wasn't yesterday, and it might outpace yesterday if it keeps going at this rate. It's pretty cool to be moving solid numbers (solid compared to like, 1 or 2 a day anyway).

Our Greenlight has seen a huge boost as well. We're up to 71% now. Overall, I'm not upset at all about the PewDiePie video going up. He's done us a huge solid!

Abyss Odyssey is a great game. Fun combat and great art. It's a strange mix of a Binding of Isaac style action-roguelike gameplay with Smash Bros type combat. Not exactly following the story (seems to be told in little pieces via npcs, aside from the prologue which is exposition heavy) but the dialogue is pretty good at least. Has a lot of character to it, and the character portraits are really nice to look at. It's also fully voiced so that's great as well.

My few complaints are about the controls (which I attribute to the hideously slow turn speed) and the online (which has been laggy to the point of unplayable, and friendly fire in co-op is the dumbest thing ever). The former isn't a huge deal, but the latter issues make the co-op impossible at the moment. Hopefully a patch fixes that soon.

I got it on it's launch sale at 9.99 but it's easily worth the 14.99 asking price if you're looking for a beautiful combat heavy roguelike. I know we've seen a lot of roguelikeish and combat heavy side-scrollers lately, but even with its issues this one is easily the best so far.

edit: first patch is out and seems to fix some of the issues I had: http://steamcommunity.com/app/255070/discussions/0/43099721532286113/

Wow. Had no idea this was out. I stay on top of game releases, but this totally flew under the radar. Will wait a while as I'm pretty sick of games with rogue-like elements. I really need a good sense of overall progression to enjoy most games.

It's a real shame...love action side-scrollers, but I just don't enjoy rogue-likes very much.
