Indie Games 2014 [July] Now Voting - Post 430!

I and Toma played an old free version, it was a competent Zelda clone from what I remember but I didn't invest much time on it, I remember Toma enjoying it though.

I enjoyed the Lenna game very much indeed. I definitely will pick up the full version, awesome to see them expanding on it :) Can someone make a post for next months thread?

And Halfway is definitely good, great ambience, satisfying combat, interesting story/mood. I played the Beta and had some concerns about the overall content and the tactical depth for the later levels, but I can play some more later tonight and give some more indepth impressions as I was mostly bug hunting so far and not so much trying to enjoy it :)
Thanks guys, I will probably go ahead and pick up Lenna's then.

As for Halfway, that would be great if you had some more impressions later Toma. I feel like it is going to be a good game but I have become more discerning lately. With SO many games (even moreso indie games) coming out these days I am finding myself trying to find games worth my time instead of just money.

What do you mean about the level design? I enjoy dynamic levels, moving objects in the environment, stuff is happening, you need to react. Is that how the game is?

If you want a reaction based autorunner then you might really enjoy OlliOlli, the game certainly over time becomes fairly ruthless with its demands on your reactions and very minor errors can force you to restart runs so you have to be on the ball constantly.

The issue I was trying to highlight on my earlier post was that I found OlliOlli levels to be overly tough and demanding once you leave the opening tutorial stages and I would have preferred that they had focused on a more casual environments to really let you go crazy with the trick system and develop insane high score routes. Don't get me wrong, it is still a very enjoyable game but the twin gears of high score trick system and twitch autorunner don't always click together.

Edit: Reading the previous page about the game Halfway, I originally misread that as the indie horror game Hallways which made me very confused about Tomas post.

Deep Under the Sky is an upcoming game by the creator of Incredipede. The game looks like Aquaria.

Okay, so:
Its a fun game with a great feeling for ambience and the setting, despite being a "comic"-style top down 2D game, but I already said that yesterday. Technically, the game is very, very well done with the cover system, item management, different weapon/armor types and a good challenge. The biggest downside so far is that the levels feel so... repetitive, because they always come down to the same thing. Rarely did I need to adjust my tactics, because there is only 3 types of enemies within the first few levels, and the customization for combat depth doesnt go quite as far as I'd like (different grenades, ammunition types, skill trees), however, the game is still fun, just at the same time a bite more intricate than the first impression might be suggesting, while on the other hand not being as deep as one might hope once you see there is a bit more going on than it seemed as first.

...if that made any sense. The game is fun and I definitely recommend others to pick it up eventually, but maybe not necessarily... now considering the amount of other Indies we have here every month.

Another thing to note:

That editor is supposed to come soon and looks quite intriguing.

Whats the perma-death situation like on Halfway? Trying to figure out if it is more XCOM or FF Tactics.

Just saw, Giant Bomb has a quick look out for Gods Will Be Watching. I'm probably gonna buy the game so I won't watch it now, but it might give people on the fence an idea of what is might all be about.

Not sure tbh, because my characters havent died so far, but it autosaves after every level. Unsure whether they are gone for good, or just out for the remainder of the fight, probably the last one.

Impressions
Thanks Toma, I think I will hold off until the winter sale to pick it up or if some good user-made stuff pops up.

Everything I see on Gods Will Be Watching seems really awesome to me but I don't really like/am awful at adventure games. After watching the quick look I feel even more like I would do poorly with it but the setting and dark undertones are really awesome.

Any Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon impressions? I only now came across this after looking up Neko Entertainment's website (who just published Wooden SenSey on WiiU).

I'm not John Walker's biggest fan either - so yeah, I'm interested to see what some other outlets think.

Maybe he went to play the game expecting other thing? Also GB did a quick look.

Yeah, thats the impression I got as well, but I cant even tell WHAT he expected, because some of his complaints seem a bit...weird? You are forced to repeat similar actions, well...did he even play the prototype? o.o

Was M_B going to write a review for his blog? Might want to check his impressions too.

M_B famously finds the positives in every game as well - people in the OT are having issues as well though.

True, can you link me the thread again? Would like to see what others wrote. Alternatively, choice quotes from the other thread posted in here would be even better :p

Is anyone here playing SpyParty? Do you think its worth the 15$? It still seems far from completion (I was initially looking it up to see if it was already released for consoles, haha).

I used to play it and it is a really good game, really fun and the community is nice with newbies, contrary to MOBA communities. I don't know how many people are playing it nowadays. I would suggest playing online with a friend if you can, so that you are sure you can play whenever you want. The game development is fairly active by the way. We could be even be able to play together.

Thanks for the answer. I'll probably wait till the new models are implemented at least since they look so much better but its good to know that its progressing since its such a compelling game. I would much rather get for consoles since it feels like a great game for the WiiU (or even PS4+Vita/Tablet).

Hey, I mention the negatives too, but I tend to focus on what works and what makes a game worth playing.

Damn, I have to wait till next week to play GWBW...interesting to see if I'll agree with the "too hard" complaints.

Voting July!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list or a "honorable" mention if you feel that one game deserves another mention even though it wont count for your list. That way it would also make it interesting to read which games we should check out that others might have enjoyed. You dont need to "rank" the 10 games. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Voting

- Heroes Rise: The Prodigy
- Arcade Ace
- Vagante
- Tales of Maj'Eyal
- Hardline Gunner
- Subray

Interesting month, from all the games I've played so far the only one that I didn't like too much was Mother Machine.

Damn, I have to wait till next week to play GWBW...interesting to see if I'll agree with the "too hard" complaints.

I know you do mate, I'm only messing!

I'm still torn on GWBW - I don't mind hard games at all - but frustrating ones are a different matter.

Without trying to sound like a broken record, but more people should really try these:

5. Lantern Forge
6. Tobias and the Dark Sceptres
7. Ten Suns
8. Pocket Robots Test Chamber
9. Baby Mummy's Curse

All really interesting in their own right, and all free and rather ignored so far in this thread.

I've managed to play like 4 Indie games this month. How do you guys find time to play all these games?

Yeah, many are really short and I usually try to stick with 30-40 minute impressions for most of these to see how much I like it. Since I naturally dont like every game there is, I can usually finish the daily games in 2 power sessions per month with 8-10 hours of indie gaming and impressions writing each.

...unless my free time is drastically decimated by something as phenomenally awesome as Tales of Maj'Eyal.

1. Crimsonland
2. Subray
3. Pocket Robots Test Chamber
4. Chronology
5. Hardline Gunner
6. Nekro
7. Inside My Radio
8. UnSummoning: the Spectral Horde
9. Chained
10. The World Beneath

1. Crimsonland
2. Subray
3. Pocket Robots Test Chamber
4. Chronology

If you know about Fallen London and Sunless Sea, then the rumors of Failbetter/Bioware collab project should make you very excited

Wow, that was unexpected. Curious what they do with that.

Definitely interested in that one, but the stuff they showed previously was already interesting enough.

Here is a selection of indie games from two recent humble bundles, including BTA games. Feel free to take whichever key you want.
