Aztaka is DEFINITELY a great game:

I highly recommend grabbing it during the next sale or something.

The visuals are good looking, the music is quite soothing, and the game played pretty well.
Also Aztaka does a few things in which I haven't seen before in a side scrolling adventure. For example, the inventory system has a very Western RPG feel. Think Baldur's Gate, only not as complex. There is also a spirit element that you use your mouse to help manipulate the environment. There seems to be a Metroid element in the game where as you gain new abilities you can access new areas that you couldn't before. I seem to also have a hummingbird companion (similar to the spirits in Symphony of the Night) that can also be leveled up as well, but I haven't learned how to use him yet.

Very, very engaging game. Its a bit "slower" as an action RPG, but it teaches you how to properly position and attack instead of just mashing and the rewarding character progression, exploration and art style make this game a small gem of a game. Fantastic game, also I want the soundtrack.

Savant was a pretty neat little game for the time they spent on it. I wish that they spent more time on it for power ups, abilities, and music. It was a pretty cool shooter.

Edit:
Just discovered after you beat the game you get an "upgrade" to your arsenal.

It feels like we're almost at the point where there are more indie games than they are games made by studios.

You can still grab Aztaka (with soundtrack) from the Groupees bundle for another day (http://groupees.com/arpg)

It's a good game that's rough around the edges. I'd love to see what they'd be able to do with another game.

Can someone help me out with notable indie releases in August... here's what I have so far:

  • 2 - Cloudberry Kingdom $10
  • 8 - Guacamelee $15
  • 8 - Papers, Please $10
  • 8 - Spelunky $15
  • 15 - Gone Home $20
  • 22 - DiveKick $10
  • 22 - Skullgirls $15
  • 26 - PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate $20

Am I missing anything? Is it just me or is this month better for big indies than May (Gunpoint, Swapper, Dust)

Isn't Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons coming out as well?

Some thoughts on a few games I played today:

Speedrunners (Beta) (Steam)
http://tinybuild.com/speedrunners
Speedrunners-thumb-610x344.jpg

Holy crap this game is fucking good. I can't get over it. So it's Sonic meets Bionic Commando meets Mario Kart. Enough said right? Alright, alright, some more info... It's in beta right now so the features are limited. You can only do multiplayer and you can choose from a quick match against strangers or local play with friends. I've only done quick match so far. You can get into a room with up to 4 players but there don't seem to be many players yet so I've only played 1v1.

The goal is to beat your opponent(s) in a race of platforming, hook-grappling, item mashing skill. You can slide under and jump over obstacles, collect (and subsequently use boost), run over "?" boxes for items, grapple on white ceilings and of course jump, double jump and if there's a white wall - you can wall jump it. Each level makes some sort of circle so you keep lapping until you beat your opponent. The way you win is by being better enough to get a full screen ahead. If you manage to do that, you score a point. First to 3 wins.

What makes it so great is that it's all very intuitive yet these matches are intense as hell. Rounds can last extremely long if you and your opponent are closely matched. It can sway one way and you get close to winning and then all of a sudden your opponent gets a dash item or you flub up because you're so close to winning you can't see what's ahead of you -as you get close to winning around you're approaching the edge of the screen which doesn't leave much room for seeing what's next; this might be the designer's way of implementing a little rubber-banding without being as annoying as blue shells.

Anyway, this game is the shit. My only complaint is lack of players so sign up for the beta and join us.

I'm a little disappointed by this but that's mostly because I paid for it. I kickstarted it for $10 and while this game has a lot of polish (especially for a beta), it still feels like a mobile game akin to Jetpack Joyride or Temple Run. Of course, those games are good and whether or not that's worth $10 is extremely subjective. But I feel like I overpaid. That said, there seem to be a lot of unlocks as you play the game so maybe I'll enjoy it more as I keep playing.

This is basically a high score game and the gameplay itself kind of boils down to: move left and right to avoid obstacles plus pick up score orbs and power ups along the way. Also avoid the shade because your craft is solar-powered. The power ups so far include the ability to extend daylight and the ability to jump using the action button. The latter gives you another way to avoid obstacles. I think it's well worth your time now that the beta is open even if I'm a bit bitter about spending $10.

Thanks to More_Badass for recommending this one but I was pretty meh on it. I like the art style a lot and it's really kind of neat in what it does but it didn't hold my attention for very long. The RPS preview liken it to Super Smash Bros which I can kind of see. I guess it seems like the Smash Bros campaigns. Those never really held my attention either so that might explain that. Still there are power ups to be found, enemies to bash and lots of jumping. The demo is available in Unity Web Player on Kongregate so definitely try it out.

It's a Summer of Arcade title, so it might be a month or longer before we get it on Steam.
I guess I didn't specify PC but for whatever reason, I was thinking PC in my head. Even though I have XBLA

This month is going to destroy my wallet. Guacamelee, Spelunky, Gone Home, maybe PixelJunk Monsters...

I'll try to finish some of the games I bought in the summer sale until next week. Rogue Legacy and Bit.Trip Runner 2 are done, Kairo and Incredipede are the next ones.

I must say, Rogue Legacy is addicting. It was difficult to stop playing it. I really like how the game was built in a way that makes you feel you're always making progress and that success is never far.

Aztaka is DEFINITELY a great game

I bought it like 2 years ago and still haven't touched it. I'll move it up on my priority list.

Just played through Tessallation. Very cool, albeit extremely short, game. Very well realized art style and feel.

Very cool ideas, hopefully they get to build it into a full product someday!

Support an awesome Japanese indie as well!

Has this game been mentioned before?

Interstellaria for Windows, Mac, iPad
Site | IndieDB

From what I've read, best description I can think of is FTL + sandbox action platformer. It's a work in progress

Command your own Starship! Take control of a powerful faster than light ship. You control the crew and the stations. Your skills as a commander will either help you to survive the perils of the galaxy, or cause your crew to perish. Your crew lead the way. You keep them fed, give them rest, and entertainment. Assign them to stations to boost your ships abilities and level up their skills. Each crewman is unique and valuable. Each one you let die is a huge set back! Explore the galaxy! Trade between worlds, and use diplomacy to learn the secrets of the universe.

IF all else fails, make planet fall and explore the world on foot. Upgrades are everywhere! New ships are available at every port. Purchase helpful stations which you can place on board your ship to help your crew, or your combat abilities. Powerful guns and armor are available as well to keep the commander safe on his away missions.

if you have a 360 guys try speedrunners on there, go to the Indie tab and search speedrunners.....

there is a free demo, I will be interesting to see what price point this is as it is only 240 pts on xbox, and looks identical

Warning, Timesink Alert!!!

Just tried the Megabyte Punch Demo, and the game is all sorts of goodness :)

and I wish the damn devs did not do a pre-order discount, as I missed it, and now I am annoyed.... anyone know how much it was?

as the Rogue Legacy discount was a big one and I missed that

Is it a lot more stable these days? I recall ye olde ages back, it was a bit of a bug paradise.

Played 2 hours without any issues. Really sad to hear it had issues on launch, but the active spirit manipulation, tactical combat and loot inventory management come together really well. Hugely enjoying my time with it.

Just downloaded it. Looks neat!

Can't get Aztaka to run too well, the game keep chugging up the minute anything happens to on screen. Shame because given it is an action RPG I would probably really enjoy it and I do dig all the Aztec myths and culture angle of it.

Played T.O.M.B.

I don't like it. I understand exactly how to get through the room with the rules it presented, but can't actually do it because of the clunky platforming.

It seems pretty cool so far, my only problem is you can't change the keybindings. Space should be jump!

Yeah true. I got used to it eventually though. Also why does it have slowdown issues for some? Runs pretty well on my integrated graphics card of my laptop. Weird.

This is good stuff!

Success!

I finally played More_Badass recommendation: Warning Forever

It's an amazing game, the boss adapting after the previous form is destroyed focusing on making the the parts where you destroyed first stronger. After some iterations the fights starts to become hard and it brings some strategy, like it's better to focus in the other parts than the ones you're accustomed to not make them stronger the next stage.

so just tried Megabyte Punch 2 player, and I can now see why they never made it more than local co-op, depsite the grumblings...

I found it almost ruined the game, you both end up going your own route and the game only makes you come together for the boss battle, which is disjointed and chaotic as you all seem to meld into one, it might of been as I was playing with my young son, though

I can't open a new topic, I hope it's not wrong to ask this here:

Is Prison's Architect worth the price of the Alpha?

Its a good game, but considering they jacked up the price for the Beta and its likely going down on release, I cant say "its worth the price" with a straight face. If you arent in a NEED to play the game, I'd wait for the full feature release with a lower price.

You came to the right place!

I got the game during the Sale when it is discounted but the general consensus is that the price is too steep right now.

Looking up the game, had never seen it, the developer used your GAF name. I assume this is your game? If so, looks and sounds fantastic. Very excited to play this now. Had no idea!

You mean he is a Memb-OHMYGOD?

:p

Dascu/DascuMaru is me. The one and only member of the development team behind Malebolgia.

You guys are my people. Thanks for doing these awesome threads.

Feel free to stay here and talk to us to either recommend stuff or just randomly talk about something. We like talking :p

Your favourite Indies lately?

Just curious, anyone try Warning Forever? Anytime I recommend something, I'm interested if what others think of it. I know I love the game
I feel really old because I remember playing that back in high school which feels like 10 years ago.

Still fun to break it out once in a while.
