Indie Games [January] Now Voting - Post 634!

Top page post again! This is...what, like the eighth time already?

4hW7ix3.gif

Voting thread up!
Link to the Voting Thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734961

In short:
Rank your top 20 PC Indie Games you played last year (check the previous monthly threads if you want to remember what we played here), feel free to give the same rank to multiple games, like:
Code:
1. Game XY
2. Game ÖZ
2. Game GA
2. Game XD
5. Game XT
6. Game HT

Feel free to include a second list with the ranks 21-50 in the same manner, but the second list is not needed for the voting.

Also, make sure to post about why you think certain games deserve the votes, to convince others to try a game or to remind them of a certain game. We covered ~500 games last year, so its easy to miss one or two great ones. I would also suggest subscribing to the voting thread to be informed about others writing up their impressions/why this game was awesome-posts.

Tim Cosmonaut - ???? (PC, ?)

puzzle2.gif

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=37583.0

Tim is on his last journey to the cosmos. His spaceship gets invaded by alien robots, and he has to fix the machinery that they break in their way.
Tim Cosmonaut is a voxel puzzle shooter (with a lot of platforming as well)

Two God tier STG from C85 (Comiket 85)
All finished, but have no digital or overseas publish plan so far

Revolver 360 RE:ACTOR by kuroro999
Price: ¥1890 ≈ $18

Official site: http://crosseaglet.xii.jp/game/R360R/

The "360" in title means you can do this:

Earlier English reports from C83 are here:
http://nyu-media.com/feature/c83-stg-highlight-astebreed-edelweiss/
http://nyu-media.com/feature/c83-stg-highlight-revolver-360-reactor-cross-eaglet/

Where the heck can I procure copies of these games? I can't believe Nyu Media hasn't already gotten these titles lined up for digital distribution.

The "genre" separation is a bit tenuous, sure, but it could be a sensible solution IF you order the games of each genre by votes received. That way, you get a good mix of games if you scroll down (maybe one or two "big" games, let's say Gone Home and KRZ for "Adventure", followed by some smaller stuff, then, say, Volgarr for "Platforming", smaller stuff, and so on).

I feel that people would be surprised to not see the most well-known indie games. I like the idea suggested by daydreaming if the "genre" makes sense, i.e. if each game is not part of more than two genres. This way, you still get to see less known games because of the break-down of games into categories.

Anyone got to try the Malebolgia demo? I got the key, but cant find the exit. The manual says something about the exit of the first area being to the left of the entrance? But there is nothing left of the entrance other than a long ass hall with one single door leading to the room with the key.

Help?
It's to the right.

I'm feeling your idea, Toma (unsurprisingly, since I was against weighted votes to begin with :P).

Otherwise, there's really no point to it, you could just as well list them alphabetically (like Oni suggested, and I would be alright with it), the votes are not reflected in both cases and people can read the description if they don't know what a particular game is about. I mean, if you're talking about people going out of their comfort zones to consider playing the unknown gems, genre preferences shouldn't be the subsequent barrier.

The weighted votes are actually helping small games, since the big games are popping up on almost every list. But yeah, doing it simply alphabetically would be another option, I just fear that it might be a bit too much for a new reader without any distinctions at all, but I'll play around with that idea a bit more.

Good to see you aren't objected to dropping the vote list from the thread though.

It's to the right.

This is in the manual:
For the first area, the exit is to the left of the entrance but is locked. A key can be found on the
top floor of the middle area.

;)
Also, KRZ is 50% off on steam today. Should I get it guys?

I'd say so ,yes. I am certainly not the biggest fan of the game within these Indie halls, but the game is a worthy experience for that price.

Cuphead - ???

Cuphead-CaptainSilver.gif

http://www.cupheadgame.com/

Cuphead is a run 'n gun - but instead of individual levels - you play bosses only (influenced by Contra III/HC & Gunstar Heroes). The visuals and audio are heavily inspired by the 1930's cartoon era.

Goddamn, does anyone have any more info about this game? I don't think a single gif has sold me on a game as quickly as this one, the artstyle is outstanding. And the (very short) gameplay clip in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v80_FwbAv_s looks like it plays very nicely too.

Gotta say, if I compare the progress of the current Malebolgia demo to the last one, its really shaping up nicely. Currently writing up a novel for Dascu with my impressions, hope I am not going overboard with this :p

Edit: If you didnt receive it because of Steam crapping out, let me know and I'll resend it.

Comiket is a big doujin ACG fair, people only sell physical goods there, like a book or CD-ROM. Astebreed will release its digital version at mid-January (Japanese version only), not sure for Revolver 360 RE:ACTOR.

Doujin game devs in Japan always need a publisher to localize their game, Edelweiss already released two games on Steam, both published by Capcom, hopefully Astebreed will follow the same route.

If Capcom have no time for this, Active Gaming Media (playism) seems like a good choice for those devs, they already released Unholy Heights and La-Mulana on Steam last year, seems really active.

Wasteland 2 is on Steam early access, but I cant find a key for my KS backing anywhere? On the Inxile website, I only found my extra Wasteland 1 key, but not the Steam early access one. Anyone knows how to get that?

Were you at the $55 backer level or higher? I got confused when I saw it pop up too, especially at that price, until I realized I was at the basic "get the final game" tier.

Ah gotcha. Thanks :)

Besides Unholy Heights and La-Mulana recently EF-12 and Mitsurugi were greenlit by Valve and One Way Heroics is in the top 10 in Greenlight. Why they need to keep going through Greenlight I have no idea.

Speaking of Japanese indie shmups, I wish Crimzon Clover was on Steam instead of on some obscure Doujin retailer.

Somebody played Chuck's Challenge 3D?
It's on Dailyroyale.com for $/€3.19 instead of usual $/€7.99.
It has been greenlit and if you buy the game now (according to Desura) you will get a Steamkey when it's released.
Bought it since I loved Chip's Challenge. Hope it gets released soon on Steam

From design genius behind the classic game Chip's Challenge, comes Chuck’s Challenge 3D, a fiendishly addictive puzzler that’s packed with features that will tease the brain and challenge the fingers. It also comes with a level editor that lets you upload and share your levels for everyone to play and rate, all from within the game.

Chuck’s Challenge 3D includes four different game modes:

• PLAY – through 125 levels with your best times published online
• CREATE – your own levels with over 70+ Game Elements & share them with the world
• SEARCH – download levels created by other players
• WEEKLY PUZZLE – play the best user created level of the week

Meet Woop, just your everyday puzzle lovin’ purple alien capable of altering time and space. Woop has summoned all-round puzzle game legend Chuck Sommerville for one purpose - to create a universe of puzzles for him to work his way out of.

Three more Screenshot Saturday games, thanks to TIGForums

Big-B - ???? (PC, ?)

B-12 - ???? (PC, Mac, Linux)
UXIXE5m.png

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=33970.0

B-12 is a first/third-person platform shooter with game-play inspired primarily by Mega Man X, featuring 3D platforming influenced by Mario 64, Papo & Yo, and Journey. It's being developed with Unity Pro, Blender, and Gimp and will be released for Windows/Linux/Mac and more hopefully.

FreezeME - ???? (PC, Mac, Linux)
test2.gif

http://www.indiedb.com/games/freezeme

FreezeME tries to resemble the platformers of the N64 era. There’s an apparent twist, however, as the player can freeze objects and enemies in time by taking a picture of them.

Some more Heart & Slash GIFs
(You can ride it too)
And a Kickstarter, possibly in February

And, I don't know how I missed this, but Rain World's KS is starting very soon

I am currently working on a program to create the game posts in the OP automatically for every month. Hope I get it to work (which basically means that its going to be even more important to follow the correct post format).

bS02pzM.png

Alright, I can download the thread, divide it into individual posts and crudely sort it by posts containing an image+link. I'll try to extract the individual information now (meaning individual links, pictures and figuring out a way to tell whether its a post about released games or not.

Good job. It looks slightly overkill though. I think a small script with Python and BeautifulSoup could (automatically) do the job.

I could have a look tomorrow evening. I have done similar stuff to parse Dota 2 matches from my dotabuff profile.

I know my way around c# a bit, and maybe I get it to work that way already.

But yeah, that link seems handy.

I wasted the whole sunday working on this, but at least I got it working:
dcAQzSE.png

Which reminds me that I should write up the formatting again and put it in the OP:

Released games:
Code:
[B]TITLE[./B] - PRICE (PLAT)
[QUOTE][IMG]IMG[./IMG]
[URL="LINK"]LINK[./URL]

DESCRIPTION TEXT
[./quote]

Not yet released games:
Code:
[B]TITLE[./B] - PLAT
[QUOTE][IMG]IMG[./IMG]
[URL="LINK"]LINK[./URL]

DESCRIPTION TEXT
[./quote]
Delete the "." and add the proper information. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.

If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.

If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.

Hey Toma, you never featured Shwip in an OP! (I say it like that, cause you posted about the game in the March thread)

Shwip - PC
IUEQ9.gif

http://jamhammer.ca/games/shwip/

Shwip is a relaxing dual stick action arcade shooter with special weapons and traits never before seen in the genre. Your ship comes equipped with a Shwip ( It’s an incredibly awesome whip ) that can be used along with other weapons in the game to destory and incapacitate your enemies. Relax, sit back and enjoy the various game play modes ranging from relaxing to tense action.

Edit: you don't want the date/release year in the format for upcoming games?

I am late to the party (if there was a party) on Spud's Quest. What a fantastic game. I never played the Dizzy series or similar games in my youth so the whole game structure of platforming/exploring/finding items/solving puzzles is new to me and it really is a great style of game. Plus the controls are really nice, honestly some of the best 2D platforming I've experienced in awhile. I'm only in the first element temple but I'm really having a blast so far. I bought this a few months ago in the Not on Steam sale so I hope the Race The Sun guys (or someone else) organizes another one.

Such a shame this was never greenlit but the guy's next game, which was greenlit, looks really interesting as well (The Escapists). Definitly day one for me

Edit: I also posted some quick thoughts about Sang Froid - Tales of Werewolves. I'm working my way through my indie backlog. I was hoping to get enough games in for the indie GOTY thread but I probably won't.

Edit 2: Oops, sorry I'm not following the formatting of the thread :( It's late so I'll fix it tomorrow and maybe flesh out my thoughts a bit more

I threw a one-man party for that game back in October. I shall revisit it as soon as possible to see if it makes it into my top 20.

This thread (and the previous ones) are priceless, I wouldn't know about 80% of those games if it wasn't for these.

Nidhog is a must try with that Prince of Persia vibe.

And it's confirmed to have single player! (Yes I'm that crazy guy who buys Samurai Gunn and Nidhogg for singe player)

Gunn is lots of fun singleplayer i'll admit, the moment i was duellign more than one opponent while parrying swords and bullets in a frenzy, felt pretty close to how an mp match would be.

But i really hope they add more stuff cause the price is a bit too high :)

Edit: you don't want the date/release year in the format for upcoming games?
As I said, I am not a big fan of Indie release dates, so I won't make them mandatory, but if you have something, feel free to include them like you did so far.

Galactic Princess looks like it could have great potential and I love pixel art games. Will definitely fund when it hits kick starter. Hope they push for a console release as well.

Nice work with the program Toma.

Thanks, I really hope it will save me a bit time each month. Spending 10-15 hours just to create these threads is mindboggingly crazy.

This post is kind of a placeholder, because the game is releasing on Early Access on the 10th so I'll add the price then

Turbo Dismount - $6.99 (PC)
ss_56576418bc5c6862f15c955b8829d4602129f9c4.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/263760/

Turbo Dismount is a kinetic tragedy about Mr. Dismount and the cars who love him. It is the official sequel to the wildly popular and immensely successful personal impact simulator - Stair Dismount. The highlights of this experience are multiple vehicles, an awesome replay system, (some) level editing features, high-speed physics and an indiscriminate sense of style.

You can play the web demo here: http://turbodismount.com/
Now the game may look kind of simplistic and dull, and it is relatively mechanically simple, but as a fan of the original Dismount games, I find it very addicting. Take Burnout's Crash Mode, put a fragile ragdoll in the midst of the vehicular chaos, and you have an idea of how Turbo Dismount works.

okay that Journal trailer is quite charming. The music is so wonderful. Is that music from the game? I need to buy this.

simian.interface - Free/PWYW (Browser, PC, Mac)
simian_6.png

http://www.vested-interest.co/simian/

"Vested Interest's puzzle game simian.interface is a simple concept that... gets a bit weird. As a monkey undergoing testing, your job is to move the mouse to align shapes and complete patterns. It starts simply enough by filling one square with another, but as the levels progress, you'll have to rely more and more by figuring out what you need to do as different colours and patterns come into play" (JayIsGames)

Game has actually been out since early 2013, but I just found it today because the IOS version is releasing this week. You can play it for free in-browser or PWYW for a PC/Mac version + soundtrack. It's weirdly abstract, and definitely has a cool visual puzzle mechanic.

Program Test - successful.

Its... its... beautiful.

Until yesterday, I was only analyzing the individual posts, here is the picture of the full thread mode that also creates my OP posts:

<3

I fully expect it to have a few bugs and crashes still for some unexpected errors. Going to run it through some older threads and see whether it manages to hold up as well.

But since I finally got it working, its going to be even more important to follow the Post format for game suggestions, so please keep that in mind since I would love to stop checking every single post :p

Is it good or bad that 15 of those 16 games were posted by me? I hope it doesn't seem like I hog up the thread with so many posts. I'm open to criticism if you guys are annoyed by it or something

Those posts are definitely fine, otherwise we wont be able to fill up the next thread. If it ever gets a bit too much, I'll simply drop a few before putting it into the next thread.

Besides, you know the format, which helps me out a lot.

Some Screenshot Saturday highlights.
