Insider Gaming: Nintendo Has Explained Why The Switch 2 is So Expensive

Man, ill laugh hard when this become 3DS all over again and they need to make another embassador program.

Nintendo selling small budget games for U$60/70 for years now their small budget games ll cost U$80/90 because inflation, sure sure

By this logic R*games should be sold for at least U$300, need to recoup the increase dev cost + inflation.

The market will ultimately decide if the prices are too high or not.

I suspect the first few months we'll see Switch 2 flying off the shelves. After that though...

Yup, time will tell.
If Switch 2 is a hit it just means they were right in increasing the price.
If it underperforms they'll have to admit they were being too greedy and adapt, just like they did with the 3DS.

It's one thing for a bleeding edge modern AAA publisher to argue for pushing the boundaries on game prices. But Nintendo is NOT THAT. It is overwhelmingly an AA developer that has basically been doing the equivalent of "game engine shrinkflation" under the guise of "cute art style" over the past two decades. It many cases it isn't even that...it's ports of AA games from a decade ago.

I don't know if GTA 6 will be worth $100 but at least they can argue they needed a 1000 engineers to simulate a fucking virtual city.

I don't know who you are talking about man

It's kinda crazy that a guy named Doug Bowser turned out to be Nintendo's Don Mattrick and that certain poster decided to become Nintendo's you know who. The crazy part is that this kinda happened out of nowhere.

$450 is a lot?
I guess it depends on where you are in life. I remember waiting tables at Ruby Tuesday to save up for a GameCube. $200 seemed like a lot at the time.

Nowadays $450 is whatever. Still in impulse purchase tier. A pricy GPU or $650 Steam Deck OLED takes some consideration.

It's not even the price that's pissing me off the most, it's that I don't have the option for an OLED model. Except for my stove, microwave, RG35XX-H, 3DS and washing machine (and maybe car, don't know what the car's using tbh) I don't have any LCDs in my home anymore. I changed them all for OLEDs where possible. Hell they could charge me 600$ for an OLED model, I wouldn't care. But I won't go back to LCD when everyvody knows they'll launch an OLED version sooner or later.

I get it, Nintendo is greedy, they charge too much, but they've always been greedy. That's pissing off a lotnof people. But I don't care getting ripped off as long as the quality is ok I couldn't care less whether they make 20% or 50% profit on the product.

I have no problem with the hardware cost, My issue is the Software cost combined with not just making a Switch 2 physical game like every generation before.

Switch Pro is about $50 to high and the games prices are ridiculous

Japan and Trump will lower tariffs before then also

I really don't like it when SNES era prices are compared to modern ones.

the circumstances are so different that they aren't really comparable. arguably SNES era titles were massively overpriced given their respective development budget... DKC was made by 12 people in a fraction of the time modern AAA games. but somehow these AAA games with hundreds of devs and 5 year dev cycles still can make a profit after selling the same amount of copies DKC did 🤔

At least Nintendo can argue that their physical titles still come on costly cartridges, which other platforms can't really use as an excuse.
back in the day SNES games at times came with an additional modified version of the consoles CPU on the physical game, while a PS5 or Xbox game comes on the cheapest medium possible.

so for physical games their prices make total sense, however with the increasing percentage of digital sales their margins also increase.

Switch 2 is too cheap

Well at least according to the current USA government. Thats why they think you should pay more for it lol

I think people are missing the point that at a certain point, you price out the casual buyers, and only leave the dedicated fan bases. I only bought Nintendo games when a specific game came out, and didnt buy any other games that I may have if the price was cheaper.

Maybe with this high initial cost will motivate nintendo to drop the price lower as the game gets older, moreso than they have in the past.
There is no evidence for that though.

Depends, the usual family friendly customer base of theirs? It seems like they know it will be a bit of a stretch hence the "hey, we still sell Switch 1" comments…
Switch 1 would be around $400 in today's money. Everyone said that was DOA when the price was announced.
Switch 2 will be fine.

It's a fair price at £400 in the UK but the games jesus..... way too much, Pro controller is £80 too and it seems basic to me?.

I'd pay £70-80 for a game like Xenoblade and not think twice due to it's incredible value but Mario Kart? Lol nah

Switch 1 should be cheaper for Nintendo to produce now than it was 8 years ago (it should be much cheaper to design that class of HW than it is now). Even using the original inflation adjusted price, 8 years later I need to add $50 to the MSRP to get a generational bump.

For years, everyone always said digital-only is a good thing. Now they're asking for more money for physical games. I wonder if that would have happened if everyone had continued to buy physical games.
The console isn't too expensive. People here spend 1000 euros on stupid phones where half the features are completely exaggerated or not even used.
The prices of games have really always been very stable. It was foreseeable that they would become more expensive. The gaming industry, like everything else, has to cope with the Corona effect and war, etc. That's life. Whether the calculation will work out remains to be seen.
But it's not really surprising to anyone here that the quality of life will eventually get a bit worse due to all the crap that's going on in the world, is it?
These are really first-world problems.
Then just do without the C button or get a Switch when it gets a bit cheaper. You can also buy the games used, etc., etc.

I really dont understand how people think the switch 2 is expensive after what we have seen this entire gen. I seriously feel like i operate in a different world.

Compare street food in most cities then go to central London and buy it there, sure it is cheaper than many restaurants but you will still feel a shock :P.

I bet if you compared switch first party games metacritics and sheer volume of titles from first party with high scores vs the competition, we would all see that switch is like a three star Michelin restaurant compared to the others. Guaranteed an amazing experience from their games.

£400 is a bargain vs £300 switch. Didnt the ps5 go from £350 for a ps4 pro to £480 quid for a standard PS5?

Sony should learn from this and relaunch the PS4 with the PSPortal included, to extend the generation by 8 years and take advantage of the opportunity to raise the price of games to €90.

Yeah, but that's fairly typical of Nintendo fans to think Nintendo games are the best the industry has to offer. Not everyone agrees with that though. Metacritic neither validates or invalidates people's opinions on the games.

Well, yeah. I agree. I think the same is both for Sony and Nintendo. Not everyone understands why so many people buy Nintendo consoles and they sell like 75 million copies of their big games. Same for Sony first party games or Microsoft games to a much lesser degree.

It's fine to not understand it or not like it.

I don't think Nintendo games are the best in the industry I just don't think anyone touches them when it comes to original ideas in ips that have been established for decades.

They push the boat out more than any other publisher across so many categories of games. From 3d platformers. Kart racers to board games and soccer/golf titles.

It's bonkers when you really think about it. They are unmatched.

$500 for the system and MK isn't that bad. The issue is, dropping $500 for a system where practically everything else is a shit deal.

Its expensive because of greed. Same reason why Nintendo litigates emulators into oblivion. They are the greediest company on the planet

Switch 2 does not exist in a vacuum.

It's LCD, it's primarily filled with PS4 gen looking games and exclusives are nothing to write home about tech-wise.

Current market being: PS5 Slim for $450 with a game, slew of devices like Steam Deck that can be bought for around the same price but with 512gb and beautiful OLED screen. Plus don't forget about the ecosystem costs.

Both PS5 and Deck-like devices are supporting cheap standart memory expansions (m.2 gen4 and normal regular SD cards), their controllers are both very feature-rich not expensive (usually on clearances), there's vast list of compatable headsets, external devices etc. Plus you don't pay for basic features like voice chat or Discord integration. Switch has very little to differentiate here, really. Battery life? From 2 to 6 hours, just like Ally or Deck. Mouse? Touchpad on deck is far more interesting and portable solution. Hybrid dock? On PS5 this can be solved with Chiaki or Portal, on Deck-like devices with a simple USB-C hub (active cooling is already included).

I'd say the Switch 2 itself, while on an expensive side, is more or less OK price-wise. But putting it into context of a current market the value proposition is by far not there. Switch 1 in 2017 was not cheap either (around the price of PS4 Slim), but for the novelty of the concept and slew of powerful 1st party launch titles the value proposition was there 100% and Nintendo struck gold with it.

I'm looking forward to feeling like a Neo-Geo owner in the 90s.

Lording it over the SNES and Megadrive peasants.
