Insomniac Games releases PS5 Pro Updates for Ratchet and Clank & Spider-Man 2

Targeting it means that it will be at this FPS most of the time but there might be some drops now and then.
It's Insomniac, you can expect it to be rock solid. I doubt it dips below 30 and 60, respectively. I don't think it does on the base model either.

No words on resolution? This is for the PS5 Amateur:

Both quality modes use dynamic resolution scaling, ranging from 1440p to 4K. Insomniac's temporal injection is used to handle anti-aliasing duties as usual. Performance mode is 60fps, with dynamic resolutions ranging from 1008p to 1440p.

No reason to touch the res of Quality Mode since it was already 1440p>4K using PSSR.

When using the uncapped performance mode, the game's resolution can drop to an absolute minimum of 936p as a worst-case scenario, but other modes won't drop to this point.

Guessing Performance Mode will hold a significantly higher internal resolution.

Whats the hype with 40 fps modes? Does it have to do with getting a monitor that can display that smoothly with the right refresh rate?

Seen ppl hype up 40fps before. Like what??

Need a 120Hz VRR display. It’s a nice compromise between IQ and smoothness.

Cooool, im so behind on monitor tech i have no clue.

So if monitor has that, and you play in a 40fps mode, is it somewhat similar "feeling" as playing a game in 60fps on a traditional tv?

Yeah tthe underpromise line is real.... I like it from Sony. Hope GT7 has similar surprises. There was no mention of the fidelity modes before

I mean GT7 has to play at 60 fps minimum, so the mode we see that adds RTX is the fidelity mode.

There is an optional mode that is 8K but requires an 8K output.

There are so many graphical modes for GT7 you have to wonder if they ever plan to make a GT8 at this point. I could see PS6 running GT7 at 120 fps 4K (PSSR) and 120 fps with full rtx. I'm not sure how you get much better than that.

Maybe they should have just called this game Gran Tursimo if it was going to be a forever title, so I expect there will be a GT8 that locks out PS4 and is meant specifically for PS6 and PS5. They have to get the franchise on PC too though.

Maybe, but I'm just personally excited because Capcom approach is giving us RE2R, RE3R, RE7, RE: Village, RE4R, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and DMC5 in their Fidelity 4K Modes with RT at 60fps now.
Nothing's cut back from these games at 60fps, and if you do want to sacrifice things here and there you get 120fps.

With Insomniac at the moment you still need PS6 to get the full package.

Except that's only true if you consider 120 fps the full package.

You can get 4K RT at 60 in all the Insomnaic games running performance pro modes and these are heavier games. There is no reason we shouldn't be able to enable HFR and RT on RE2 and RE3. They're doing a PS5 Pro patch for RE4, they need to go back and do that for RE2 or 3 or at least allow you to toggle both modes.

Are we getting closer to PC style settings?? Yay if so!

Similar but different.

You still want to deliver your best 60 fps mode, but then you leave an uncapped mode with all the bells and whistles that is future proof for new generations.

If you're okay with 30 fps, spider-man 2 is going to sing on PS5 Pro, but if you wanted all the bells and whistles and 60 fps, you'll have that on PS6 or you can reduce the RTX to get closer to 40-50 fps.

It's not exactly as modular as PC, but it doesn't need to be. There is a standard SKU to configure against, whereas PC, you have so many configurations that you need more modularity to get the results people want.

He actually wants this. it's john who gets upset over more options because console experience starts becoming PC games.
Seriously, the mileage they're going to get out of making videos evaluating the FPS of every single option combination for the crowd that goes to DF is wild. This is probably their best possible outcome.

4 years but sure.

This is a precursor for how Sony will handle cross-gen with PS6. Which is better than PS4/5.

But PSSR 2.0 is going to be a significant jump as well, but PS5 Pro games running on PS6 have the potential to make for ridiculous bumps, creating more "launch titles" from backlog titles.

Someone the other day told me they thought DRS was lazy... DRS and uncapped framerates are the future of console gaming.

Anybody that thinks DRS is lazy development is so far into the weeds of crazy, that they can't be saved. Only 1% of gamers are that dedicated to a "FIXED" resolution for their games. It's amazing how closed-minded some gamers can be.

Well I just don't really care for 120fps in the slightest as I play on a 100% native blur-free-motion Panasonic panel.

I'm personally interested in max graphics at max resolution + RT at 60fps, and Capcom is about to provide exactly that with RE2R, RE3R, RE4R, RE7, RE: Village, DMC 5 and Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.

That's 8 damn games.. and games I happen to love as well.

Well yes, but those are still custom/pared back implementations.
You only get the full visual package at 30-40fps until another more powerful machine comes.
And I'm perfectly fine with this obviously.

This is also why Sony are creating so-called 'pointless' remasters like Horizon. The original game was stuck as a PS4 app which could receive no further improvements beyond what the PS5-aware patch offered. Now it not only has been visually improved to a higher standard, it also has a completely unlocked framerate that can scale up to 120fps on a future console.

Gaming should have been taking a page out of the movie studios' book by continually remastering their releases whenever a new generation comes along. There's thousands of films that have been on film, then VHS, then DVD, then Blu-ray and are now releasing on streaming and UHD. Yet when gaming companies also try to preserve its legacy in the same way, gamers act like entitled little shits.

Bro.......you hit the nail on the head!!! Never thought about it in this way, but you are right. When you include the context that these "Pointless remasters" only cost Sony $3-$5 million a piece, by a porting company that Sony bought......it becomes a smart and obvious move.

LOL... why are you confused when everyone else knew exactly what this meant.

On medium settings, this probably runs at 30 fps, but it's uncapped. The High modes will drop you sub 30, but on PS6 will probably run at 60.

You're making this about PC because, well you're you.
The default is the High setting on all RT effects in the Fidelity Pro so 30fps seems to be the base there. Adjusting the toggles to Medium or Off depending on which one should garner you a higher FPS in the Fidelity Pro mode. That's how I'm reading it. I don't think they would offer a mode that's unplayable for the most part being sub-30 other than to experiment with. A PS6 boost should get the performance mode to 4K 120fps and the fidelity mode to 4K 60fps easily.

It's great if it hits a solid 30 fps. My point was that it's obvious what they're trying to accomplish here and why they say most players should play the performance pro mode.

Metal Gear Solid 1 is one of my top 5 or 10 games of all time. I have zero interest in playing it today though. But had they remastered it on PS2 (not looking at gamecube's twin snakes) and kept it modern through the years, more and more people would be playing it. The same is true of many franchises, especially franchises that are no longer being supported.

It also gives you an opportunity to look at some of the faults that you got nicked on in reviews and fix those things too.

This is especially true when you're hardware limited from reaching your vision.

Sony is learning that lesson with TLOU now that it is a hit tv show. They'll keep TLOU modern as people will probably watch this show for the next 5-10 years... (not saying it will have 10 seasons, simply that it'll be a show people watch for some time).

I would love Arc the Lad remastered.

Look at Soul Reaver and the kind of poor remastering we're getting with it. I'll probably still buy it, but it looks like a cheap coat of paint because they don't want to do a major lift in one shot.

The best example is looking at RE2 and how they modernized that and now Silent Hill 2.

Why is this? This part I don't get.

Most players want 60 fps and the fidelity mode maxed out might not be the most stable 30 fps delivery, but it opens a window for the future, where they don't have to come back and revisit the game on PS6. Maybe a slight patch here or there, but a remaster won't be needed. They've allowed you to pare down the RTX in order to get more stable framerates.

Traditional gamers and videogame media will learn that the bolded is only good for the industry and gaming in general. MGS1 is a perfect example.

I believe the respond time/input lag is really close to the 60fps mode beside this. Richard tested in the ratchet 40fps mode.

Go to 13:00

Coincidently, this video also mentions Remedy. Richard pointed out the flaw with the engine regarding to unused performance and no DRS. I talked about this in the Alan wake 2 pro thread.

Single-player games need to do more to become forever games like GaaS.

It's the only way we're going to maintain them given their costs to develop and limited ceiling on sales.

People need to stop complaining about remakes and remasters. They're a major lifeline. We'd still have Killzone if we had gotten remasters.

Hey now, Killzone was awesome! :messenger_angry:

I know, I know. Brought nowhere close to the amount of money to Sony that Horizon does (which is part of why it's currently shelved), but I think with what they've learned since, we could get decent new game!

I wanna see if they upgrade the resolution VRR mode, that runs ar 4K but has worse anti aliasing

Just buy a PS5. It'll help with all high blood pressure issues you deal with.
Actually I measure my blood pressure (I am quite a health freak) and it is always quite low 80-100 / 60-80 - for reference normal one is usually 120/80. So don’t need to worry about my blood pressure. My last PlayStation was PS4 (which was a big disappointment for me, it was supposed to be my Sony exclusives platform, but I didn’t enjoy any of the releases - didn’t like the last of us, gone FOMO for Death Stranding, preordered it and hated it, my partner finished Detroit and it was quite cool, even watching it, uncharted 4 became very repetitive same as GOW so never finished these but those 2 are the most time I spent with Sony exclusive, and Wipeout - which is/was my favourite Sony exclusive from my first PlayStation - no Wipeout no PS console for me). Had all Playsation consoles since PSX released including their handhelds, but PlayStation doesn’t offer anything exciting for me. I prefer my Xbox - `PC - Ally X - Switch combo.

Copy paste gameplay almost every game and 30fps with janky frame pacing all day being the "better than the rest".

I know Fromsoft has it's fans and adherents, but cmon now, you guys have been eating up the same game forever.

Wow i did not expect so much options for Fidelity Pro mode. This future proofs the game, imagine it running maxed at 120hz on the PS6. Amazing stuff, Insomniac are carrying Sony hard this gen. Lets hope we see more of this from more devs moving forward. (The Performance/Quality presets should still work flawlessly locked out of the box to preserve the easy use console experience though).

It’s much more work to do this stuff in video games, and in the case of something like Horizon, it already runs on the newest Sony hardware. It’s like releasing another DVD of a movie you already released on DVD. If you want to talk about something like I don’t know Killzone 3 that’s a different story.

But dvds of stuff already released on dvd gets done all the time. There are new transfers, remasters, Criterion editions, extended editions, final cuts. Fuck man, I think i've owned no less than at least 8 different versions of the original Star Wars trilogy across VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, 4k, and Digital (and if I had a laserdisc i'd have gotten that too).

Killzone is prime for a remake/reboot. Partial single player campaign partial GaaS, but Sony probably doesn't believe in it and they'd rather at least finish with Horizon before going back to it.

My point wasn't just about Killzone, but the multitude of left behind IP due to those games being dated and some sequels not doing well.

A lot of those sequels didn't do well because the studios weren't very mature and struggled on newer hardware. Look at Syphon Filter which was a mess with Omega Strain on PS2. But you look at Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow... both of these games were excellent games. When ported to PS2 their controls were remapped but not fixed.

They wanted Omega Strain to be an online-only game, which really didn't make a ton of sense for the franchise. 3 years after MGS2 and it was a disaster. Garvin yet again blamed the press rather than owning his own mistakes, but there wasn't a woke category to blame it on at the time.

If Zipper remastered SOCOM 1 and 2 before moving on to SOCOM 3 or Confrontation, maybe they would have gained some expertise on working with PS3.

Sony had so many problems with internal/contracted development on PS2/PS3 that a lot of franchises fell off as a result. These IP still have value and should be explored, but by whom and when? Nobody knows.
