Digital Foundry - Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 Pro: How Insomniac Pushes RT And PSSR Upscaling

no i bought for full price to play on inferior hardware like an idiot.
Most PCs are weaker than a base PS5.

You probably have a 2070.

John assumed the settings on Spider-man and Miles were the same, but they only have 2 options and no control over other elements. Miles still looks great from what I played.

The performance mode is much improved, it’s doing better fidelity than the original 30fps mode
Has it been confirmed somewhere that the Performance Pro mode is the old quality mode but at 60fps+? Because everything I’ve seen and read suggests it’s basically the same ps5 performance mode, just using PSSR instead of FSR.

There’s some nuance here

It is the old performance mode but using PSSR to upscale, which can make the overall image look better than the quality mode in terms of resolution, but you may have less pedestrians, etc

So no "image stability issues" that the OP claims in this thread? :

In fact they state the image stability is improved over the base PS5.

When over 80% of the members are PlayStation users, it's natural for things to lean in that direction; however, the moderators strive to remain neutral and not facilitate this bias too much... still work to be done tho, IMO.

What the hell is this? Why should things be forced to be "neutral" when in reality things don't swing that way?

Stop having constant tantrums because the majority don't give a shit about the platform you're forced to stan for on a regular basis.

So same performance and resolution in both modes, performance mode at 1440p with PSSR and quality mode with a couple of slight raytracing improvements but capped at 30 fps.

$699... yikes!

What resolution do you think DLSS quality renders from?

Do you say "yikes" when people are spending equal amounts or more on the GPU alone and then play games using DLSS quality in order to hit 60fps at 4k resolution?

What is it about the PS5 pro that's causing some of you to behave in such an irrationally insecure way like this?

Ah ok, thanks. A pretty disappointing upgrade then, from my point of view. Unless you’re ok with playing sub 60fps.

I played Miles Morales on the og PS5 at a really high framerate (70+ maybe?), using the performance RT mode. And now the Pro can only do 60-70fps (with any RT at all?)? I haven’t played SM2 but is it really that much better looking to explain the downgrade in performance using a more powerful console?

(To be clear - I’m not being anti-Pro - I’ve bought one! I’m just a bit disappointed, and am trying to understand)

Have you bought a ps5 pro? Why are you defending it and upset if someone isn't impressed with its performance on this title?

It's bridging the gap in IQ making less noticeable differences to flex on.

I don’t see how it’s disappointing, you’re doubling the resolution at 60 fps

It’s a lot more clear and crisp

basically if you have an 120hz VRR TV which most pro owners likely do
Everyone conveniently forgets this because hdmi to crt converters are always a best seller on Amazon.
So yellow goes into yellow and then can I switch white and red?

This is an absolute lie.

Just seems odd that you specifically say "what is it about the ps5 pro" but somehow ignore the first 15 posts of the thread. Starting at post 6

Well it's a valid question. There are more posts about PC in this thread than there are about the actual subject matter of this thread. And that's all while there isn't even a PC version of this game for a point of comparison yet.

All could have been started by XXL XXL attempting account suicide and bringing up ps5 in every thread. Or slating pc in every thread. He's on a mission lolol

It's only okay when the PC does it.

There would be less whining like little girls if MS had a mid-gen refresh as well.
You know it. All we’d hear is how great it is, it’s “The Beast” (remember this one?) of consoles, etc. Which would be legitimate, if they hadn’t bounced into every Pro thread telling folks that it holds no value….. while having no issue dropping as many (if not much more) bones on a graphics card.

Man i come here to discuss the video/game and the first page is already filled with PC vs Console warring...
Anyway, Digital Foundry are so good at showcasing the differences, they do it unlike anyone else. I really like this method of quick changing between modes without transitions so you get instant feedback on whats changed.
That first comparison of PSSR vs base PS5 not only shows its sharper it also shows a lot of moving artifacts on base PS5 while the PSSR one looks super clean.
Im dissapointed though that he did not do more testing vs the Base PS5 modes to really see how big the jump is. I wanted to see Unlocked PS5 Pro Fidelity vs Base Fidelity. Base Fidelity vs Pro Performance.
Seems like a quite rushed video in that sense.

Instead dealing with issues on PC, buy a PS5 Pro.
I’m good lol. Happy that people here seem to be enjoying their Pro, but I’ll be keeping my $700-$800, thanks.

EDIT: As always though, for some reason, we always have people, or a person in this case, not letting things be. If you like the PS5 Pro and think it’s worth the asking price, wonderful, genuinely happy for you. However, its existence doesn’t suddenly mean that PCs are an exercise in pointlessness lol, that narrative always crops up when a new console releases.

I have my PC which is my main platform, but I also own an SX that sits beside it, a One X, a regular PS4, a Switch Lite, and a Steam Deck. Consoles are great, genuinely wonderful pieces of technology for the masses to enjoy their virtual toys with. PCs will just… Always be on top of the stack, or at least for the foreseeable future. That’s not me being an elitist, or bragging or talking down on consoles; that is just the nature of what kind of machines we’re dealing with. And, that’s okay, like PCs don’t make consoles inherently irrelevant either, especially when said consoles are literally just specialized, closed down PCs these days anyway lol.

Like, people literally fight over which PC is better than the other at this point; they’re ALL good, guys. A group of them are just specialized/designed to play games as their primary focus. Just enjoy the games, man, and the tech that’s behind them; it’s not that serious. It’s goofy that “warring” is still a thing.
