Intel releases HDMI stick that runs Windows 8.1 ($149)

I can't get over how perfect this concept is. Windows in a Chromecast form. It's something I've never consciously dreamed of, but it absolutely ticks all the boxes.

Very interested in this, any UK prices announced/rumoured?

Also interested to know this.

While the cheap Windows tablet mentioned in this thread would be nice, it can't be compared to having a hidden away non-visible solution just like a Chromecast.

Oh, nice.
I was excited for the HDMI intel stick, but as others were saying, considering it can't be really used as a stick since it requires power and a hub, one might as well grab one of these, instead.

Specs are very similar (or exactly the same, in fact)

Features 2GB DDR3L RAM (with support for TF/micro SD card up to 32GB)
● Intel Baytrail-T Z3736F Quad Core CPU (2.16 GHz): stable, efficient and reliable
● Intel HD Graphics: up to 646 MHz
● Storage: 32GB eMMC
● WiFi 802.11b/g/n: connect effortlessly in a world without wires
● Bluetooth 4.0: easy pairing with all your devices (computer, mobile phone, keyboard, etc.)
● Operating System: Windows 8.1 (with Bing)
● Four USB 2.0 host ports: for webcams, microphones, external hard drives, USB sticks and more
● HDMI connector: set up your home cinema for the best 1080P FHD multimedia experience
● 3.5mm audio output: immerse yourself in audio bliss

Maybe higher power consumption ? My Rasp Pi is on 24/7 (it's hidden away in the drawer and i don't want to have to reach it when i want to queue music from my tablet)

Shame about lack of USB 3.0, but other than that pretty great value at 90something $ with windows license.

Think i'll grab one of these.

Oh, I just realized it doesn't have an ethernet port. What a shame. Was thinking about getting one and using it as an extremely energy-efficient desktop PC. But lack of ethernet kills it.

Has USB, so you should be able to get a hub and use it that way. My thinking was to get a HDMI extender so you dont have the huge thing sticking out of your TV, and place it inconspicuously somewhere behind the entertainment center.

I think I'll stick with my core 2 duo/260m laptop for now. I can't stream with it, but my next laptop should be able to.

you could hide it away and make it non-visible :P

My daughter got a $200 win8 tablet for xmas. Know of any good walk-through to set up streaming from my big PC? Is this only worth it for STEAM, or are there other PC based software that do this well over wifi to use with non-steam games. Can she use a blue-tooth controller on the tablet to control a streamed game running on the PC?

It requires next to no setup. As long as the same account is logged on to the PC and Tablet (or account with family sharing) and the machines are on the same network, the two clients should detect each other, and alter library listings accordingly to indicate available games from both systems and either "play" for local content or "stream" from the other machine. Setting are available via the settings menu of the client or BPM

Just be warned, over WiFi, you do often get a lot of stuttering to the point of it being unplayable. Non-steam games work through it too, just add them as a shortcut in the Steam library of the host PC.

This is amazing and I want it but how will I use it effectively?

Because I have no idea what this can or can't do and I just want it for novelty lol. But what would be some good uses for this gaming/productivity wise?

If I can access my direct tv through this like you can on a pc, im totally in. Want to buy a small 19" tv for the kitchen, but refuse to pay over $200 for the equipment and mandatory installation plus monthly fees from directv (and comcast for that matter)

It'll need ethernet rather than using the built-in wireless, that's for sure.

I've done some steam streaming to my laptop with 802.11n

It isn't the best thing in the world, and I wouldn't play anything that required accurate timing but it wasn't bad.

The gadget show saying it should be around £99, which is damn good, but, ill believe it when I see it

Yeah, if you're logged into your Steam account on two PCs within the same network, all the games installed on the main PC come up on the second PC and where it says Play or Install normally, it'll say Stream and you just run them as normal. Very minimal input lag, 60fps and 1080p too.

You will need either 802.11ac wireless on both computers or ethernet though. Anything else is just too slow and can't keep up.

The 802.11n in my Linx tablet is good for 60fps streaming at 720p.

Ok guys, i just preordered a Pipo X7

it's 85 something € on gearbest, plus i found a coupon code around (PM me if you're interested) which shaved another 10€ off, so 75€. Which i think is great value for the tech.

And it's free shipping worldwide.

I'll let you know how it handles Mame / Retroarch with lots and lots of CRT filters :P

Gonna need to know how much ram this thing is packing. A part of me thinks they'll screw it up and only do a gig, or something.

But this could be a really interesting Kodi/Xbmc stick. I really want to see some performance stats.

Pretty sure it said above 2gb RAM and 32gb internal storage, with a micro usb slot as well.

Would work great as an emulator, esp since it has a USB port for wireless KB/mouse or to plug in a gaming controller/wireless controller receiver.

Is this thing significantly different than google chromecast or whatever it is? Or is that thing strictly a streaming thing without a full OS running on it?

Edit: That pipo thing looks a little more to my tastes and could be hidden behind my entertainment center... might have to look into that too.

What are the chances this could be turned into a hackintosh? Since its intel based and seems to have generic hardware?

Either it's massively improved, or the wireless interference in my house is ridiculous.I got into the first betas and it used to work fine, then it stopped working properly and I bought ethernet cables specifically for it. I wonder if they re-fixed it.

Grab a linx 7" from ebay for £60 - brain_stew pointed it out to me last week. same processor, full windows 8.1. You could attach it to a DS4 with a nyko clip and use it for emulators or steam home streaming - or hook it up to your TV.

That looks pretty neat. Thanks for giving me the heads up.

If this a legit PC streaming device, I will get one no doubt. Where are people seeing the price points? I haven't had much time to look around.

It looks like my concerns were half right, though. The linux version only has 1 gb of ram.

So this and the cheap tablet on the previous page got me thinking...are there now phones that run the full Windows OS, so I can install everything just like on my laptop?

I think I may get one of these. How should I expect the GPU performance to be? I know they're weak, but how weak are we talking? Think I could play, say, HL2 at 1080p and 60fps?

Okay I want to order one of these from aliexpress, but I can't figure out where it draws it's power? Through the hdmi? If it's some sort of ac adapter I need a Swedish one, what kind does the aliexpress thing come with?

This looks like it's almost too good to be true. So you get windows 8.1 with it too, or do I have to buy that separately?

Emulation/movie/streaming device on a stick, here I come!

Sorry for my shitty English BTW.

If same idea as Fire Stick or GameStick, it will draw power via a Micro USB to USB cable.

Is this legit or a scam?

Edit:
People have been messing around with this Meego Pad stick for months.

Just a heads up, when they say the processor goes up to 1.8 what they mean is you will hover around 1.33 and it will turbo boost to 1.8 if required, and in small bursts, these intel chips run hot as it is. They also idle as low as 0.48GHz

I have the Meegopad stick and I love it. Only main problem with it. The freaking wifi on the stick sucks ass for steam streaming. The blutooth interferes. Thankfully, I have a couple wifi adapters around and a usb hub I bought off monoprice.

Before I forget, even though the stick works well for streaming @ 1080p 60fps. It does pop up slow decode quite often. I solved that problem by turning down the refresh to 50hz in the intel graphics settings and it has been smooth sailing since.
