What makes Windows bad is all the extra crap they keep stuffing it with, and reactivating even if you try to stamp it out.
What makes it good is that it's compatible with everything, which to me, is the gold standard. Linux or SteamOS could run a game 30% better, but if it won't go online thanks to anticheat or whatever, then it's just a number.
I think Steam/Linux make sense for handhelds where efficiency and UI matter more, and you're likely to use them on lots of small/indie games. But it just can't replace Windows, if it did we would have all escaped already.
