whats the current line on how many years this incarnation of washington baseball will last?
Probably forever. The demographic and landscape of the entire Washington DC metro area is completely different than it was 30 years ago. The team, in its infancy and facing uncertainty about its future, still sold over 16,000 season tickets.
The owner that purchases the Washington Nationals gains access to the area that has made the Washington Redskins the biggest franchise in all of sports (crossing the $1 billion mark this year!) and one of the biggest market teams in the NL.
They'll struggle this year, but if the owner invests in the team in comparison in how fans support the team, then all indications point to the future as being very, very bright.
