Introduction to MOBAs

I liked yours, but I would have picked this for my LoL clip...

well with how badly i've done my name in this thread i can't really afford to be associated with that line

Should I play MOBA if I have no friend?

not really, no :/

you could play with gaffers if you want, tho they'll be much more experienced than you

How much does buying champions actually cost? Does it differ based on popularity?

there's lots of prices, the most expensive ones being the ones more recently released

most of the roster costs 6300 ip which can take you many many games to get, but if you're just starting out there are champions of 450 ip, 1350 ip and 3150 ip that more than do the job. maybe not all of them are as fun as ahri but like two of the best midlaners right now (leblanc and nidalee) cost only 3150, so it's not like it's the most expensive that are the best.

alternatively you can put in the $$$$ and get one for like 8 bucks? or something like that? i've never bought a champion with real money tbh

K, which one is easy to get into?
probably none?

that's kind of where the friends thing comes into play, they teach you the basics and you're not left to the mercy of these games shitty tutorials

like seriously convince at least one friend if you can so you can both have fun learning it together

It typically depends on how new they are. For really old ones, they are also loosely based on difficulty. The cheapest ones cost 450 IP, which you will get after 2-4 games (2 if you have free win of the day on one game). These champs are still really good, some of the most popular ones and the ones that are strong in the current meta are here. They are also suited for new players. Then there are those who cost 1350, 3150, 4800 and 6300 IP. Most will be 6300, and those are the typically newer champions. On release, new champs cost 7800 for a week, and is reduced to 6300 after a week. I think about half are 6300 and half are non-6300? I don't keep track, really. Personally I've had a full roster for a long time.

You can do it either by using in-game earned IP or by paying real money for RP. Originally it was based on Riot's belief of how challenging it was to play the character. But releasing champs at 1350 or something doesn't make them money, so really you should expect to fork up 6300 for anything remotely new.

I just started playing League of Legends the other day and I would like to know which champions are free. I see that I have a small selection available to me but when I google free champions of the week, I only see a bunch of champions that are unavailable to me. I'm also worried if my champion, Ahri, will become unplayable next week. If someone could explain this to me, I would appreciate it.

Edit: If anyone knows where I can find beginner guides for Ahri, please tell me. Most guides I find are either tutorial level stuff or talk about stuff I can't understand yet (AD Carry, etc.). Actually if anyone can tell me of a general guide that goes beyond the tutorial and explains items, roles and stuff, that would be great.

Just play Dotes for all the heroes

I have to admit, after playing dota 2 for a year, that pricing module is really hard to stomach, cant see myself ever paying for a hero... The fact that they cost differently, and more on release week seems pretty gross actually.

Anyway, does anyone that plays lol wana do a student exchange kinda thing, where a lol player tries dota with help from a dota player, and a dota players does the same in lol? I don't really have time this week, but I'm sure it could be interesting

I've played for a long time so I have had everyone for a long time, but I can see how it would be tedious to start over from scratch. Everyone free all the time is the best model, after all. If I didn't like the game itself so much more than Dota, I would probably have had jumped ship. I already have played the original Dota for many years.

Newly released champs costing more is gross? :D Just found that funny to think in this day and age.

there are some mad ahri fanatics on this board who would be happy to help you.

K, which one is easy to get into?

lol, dota or smite - bokens unbiased analysis

lol:
-faster gameplay due to - direct control (no turn speed, long attack points/cast points) and lots of spells that require dodging/aiming
-biggest game in the world
-more streamlined and easier to understand than dota

dota:
-more systems to learn (complexity)
-newer graphics
-all heroes free

smite:
-3rd person, so if youre used to wsad movement but not mouse movement, this is good. makes u feel closer to the action
-lots of spells that require aiming
-smaller than the other two in community
.

check dat riot games sponsorship

see, riot do good for this shitty community

Moba are like crack.

According to steam, time spent on Dota 2: 975 hrs.

Time spent on every other game I've ever owned on steam: 120 hrs.

Watch out boys!

lol wtf

why bears?

the fuckkk

so like, any professional girl gamers in doto?

Depends, do you mean pros who are girls or 'look a girl doing esports omg'? We have a few of the latter but they are pretty much ignored cus the level of play is low.

Also, for silly pro moments I'll find some of IceIceIce's antics.

Edit: Here he is trolling the shit out of poor Kaci (who doesn't know anything about Dota or esports)

Here he is goofing off on stage.

And here he is playing hide and seek and Gay Chicken.

He's such a clown.

They added a new tier above 6300?! D:

For me, I found the 6300 tier was too high. It would take over a month to earn enough ip to afford a new champ at that level and it was at the cost of getting runes. But I don't have enough time every day to play a game which really slows down the ip acquisition since you're missing out on so many win of the day bonuses.

At least they seem to be updating the textures on the lower ip champs so they aren't so off-putting to grab.

They added a new tier above 6300?! D:

It's only for the first week a champion is released.

Despite the obvious mercenary intentions behind it, I kind of like it. There's too many people trying to bust out the new champion without knowing how to play it during release week as it is, and too many people who unlock them right away and end up with buyer's remorse.

I'd rather they just made their first week of release a "free trial" period where you weren't allowed to play them in Ranked at all, though.

I realize I'm setting myself up for some (somewhat deserved) ridicule with asking this question, so I'm just going to go for it.

I've only played one MOBA--Demigod, and I actually really had a fun time with it! Mainly because it fully supports single-player play. I'm curious what other SP MOBAs exist and are actually worth playing? I am a new father (YAY!), and playing MP games is really rough since pausing isn't an option (boo!).

Thanks in advanced GAF! :)

How does it work? I mean, multiplayer is in the title of the genre, are you sure it's a moba?

Congrats!

There are people who only play bot matches in these games but you are missing out against a lot of fun if you ask me. Dota and LoL both have bot games.

You can pause in dota, but if it lasts more than a min though people will probably not like that... So not really an option in general.

They sort of don't make campaigns really anymore :(

Vs computers.

I suppose if you did Custom Games solo in League you could pause, but I think you can only use the not-very-fun dumb-bots for those, plus you probably wouldn't earn any IP. Not really worth it.

So it's just playing vs bots? Dota you can do that, like Steve says it won't be as good but you might still enjoy it.

So LoL and DOTA both have bot matches? Cool! I don't mind the dumb bots for now. I just need something to burn the time and learn the ropes until I can get in some MP action. No I need to decide which one to play--League or DOTA heh.

Yeah, in League you can have both matchmade bot games where you play together with 4 other people against bots, and custom matches where you have up to 4 bots with you and you can play against up to 5 bots as well. In the custom games you should be able to pause.

Since both are free you can try both and see what you like best, unless you have a internet cap, I guess.

They do, though for League it's a bit non-intuitive how to get to them:

Play -> Co-Op vs. AI will take you to a bot game selection, but it will be you and four other human players versus five bots. I actually think it should be okay if you AFK in these games, but I can't promise the other players won't sometimes get crabby about it, because people in general are just the worst.

Play -> Custom Game -> Create Custom Game will allow you to actually make your own session (on any map), which you can populate entirely with bots (as both allies and enemies, as desired). Unfortunately, as far as I know you can only use Beginner Bots, while Co-Op vs. AI allows you to play against much better Intermediate Bots.

It's identical in dota. Right down to the names of the menus.

This is all available in dota 2 as well, I don't know if you have this in lol,but you can also set a difficulty level for the bots, the higher difficulties are quite a big challenge for a newbie too

You guys are awesome. Thank you! :)

Bots are pretty damn braindead for LoL.

they just got an update tho

they now place wards and dodge skillshots (except ahri q lol) and buy items that make sense

they're still pretty fucking easy but i remember back in the day the intermediate bots would kick my ass

Do they actually clear wards? Because that's not realistic at all for EU play.

(At least for the single river bushes.)
