Introduction to MOBAs

Well League champions actually have a /dance emote so the first point is moot.

And you can animation cancel it.

Also in other news... the LoL might be getting a new champion who imbues allies with the power of the beard....

It was originally a fan-made champion idea half a joke.... but it might be real

If they put in Angus then I also want Vein the Night Librarian (with Way Too Fed Vein skin) and Elsie the Legmaster. (I would say NBA Darius but they've already showed off Dunkmaster so I guess that counts.)

Played a game of Dota. Why does Jakiro have no hats, Jakiro really needs some hats. Also, i am not a good Jakiro. People kept telling me to ward, but i didn't even realize i was a support or where common wards spots are. I should probably just play with bots when i play. We lost.

Just mute everyone on your team and do you.

There are a few points on the map with markings on them where you're encouraged to ward. (At noob tier.) Look at the cliff hanging over the river on Dire side to the right of the pit where Roshan is to see what I'm talking about. There's another north of Radiant's secret shop overlooking the river, and matching pairs on Dire and Radiant's jungle cliffs. (They look kind of like mini-mesas).

Warding is kind of situational, but in general you want to give vision on one of the 2 runes and / or the pit where Roshan is. I really like warding Radiant's ancient camp at the top of the stairs because you get rune and ancient vision, but that's not a place you ALWAYS should ward.

As support you should give one ward to your offlaner in most cases so he can use it to either block a pull camp or protect him from ganks out of the jungle, the other ward should either be at one of the run spots (if you want to help your mid out and are planning on having a passive early game lane) or in the lane right around the river to give vision of their tier 1 tower(if you want to be aggressive early and dive for kills, it lets you see who exactly is at the tower, if anyone new TPs in, etc.)

At low levels the most people just plop them down on the little eyeball decals, but those locations aren't always optimal for vision depending on your strategy and they will be dewarded 100% of the time at high level. Really though the most important thing about warding is to do it efficiently, basically don't think of warding as a separate task, but every time you are doing something like pushing a tower or ganking a lane, drop a ward while you are there, and while it is safe. spending a minute to go out of your way and risk getting ganked to place 'the perfect ward' is a waste of time.

If you want to go in depth for warding:

http://www.team-dignitas.net/articles/blogs/dota/1092/dota-2-ultimate-guide-to-warding/

Also Jakiro is probably a tricky hero to play coming from LoL. All of Jakiro's spells have massive windup animations. For players coming from LoL, I recommend a hero like Dazzle for support. Only thing you have to be cautious about is stealing farm from the carry with shadow wave, but if you can properly time your shallow graves and your ultimate you will win games.

Let's be honest here. If you're new to the game, it doesn't matter if you place wards or not since no one will actually be using them anyway.

Not to say, if you're interested in supporting, that you shouldn't learn how to ward properly or anything. Just that if anyone is trying to blame the loss on lack of wards then they're an idiot and should be muted.

I'm a little surprised that you'd get that in your first game though. When I first picked up Dota the first dozen or so games I was matched with complete beginners as well. We had no idea what was going on and it was probably the most laid-back pleasant Dota I've ever had.

I guess my advice would be try a few more games or queue up for some bot matches as those are usually pretty chill too. Oh, and never queue for Limited Pool as that is (was?) only filled with awful smurfs looking to stomp beginners to distract from their own lack of skill.

True enough

I was just thinking since he's coming in with some lol expereince he might have enough mechanical skill to get matched up with some higher level players.

Here's a topic that hasn't been covered (or has it?): RNG.

Riot hates RNG, the frog seems to like it. It does add some excitment, but can also lead to some bullshit.

Yay/Nay?

Yay. I don't think its as toxic in measured doses to high-level play as some people think, and randomness in some degree is IMO important to the majority of games for low level introductory play

I'm in the yay category as well so long as it's implemented well.

For example, I think the change to Roshan's respawn timer is a good addition. It creates more risk and uncertainty for Roshan and helps speed the game up for spectators since prior, when teams knew when he would return, they would play passive and stall until the last moment to try and get a pick before going for aegis. Now, the flow of the game isn't nearly as disrupted by these key respawn times, an enemy can show their hand early by hanging out before the pit waiting for his return and it makes controlling vision and space around the pit a higher objective that can become a focal for conflict.

On the other hand, something like tripping in Smash Brothers Brawl is the worst use of randomness because it does nothing other than create frustration for the players and disrupts the nature rhythm of the game.

AM can still run, he just can't get his cast animation off. Headshot is annoying for sure, but troll and skull bashers stun is a true stun, you wouldn't even be able to move or do anything, while you could still ghost sceptre against a sniper. Abyssal is also only 10% on ranged heroes. MKB also overwrites headshot.

Yeah that is completely arbitrary randomness that can be annoying.

I think every competition needs some amount of random variation to make things interesting. If a game has a perfect solution, it very quickly becomes boring. A little randomness in the right places creates tension and uncertainty.

And basically ever physical sport has lots of random elements, based on which way the ball bounces, and most of the time it creates an additional level of strategy to account for random factors, which creates tension between conflicting benefits. Like offensive rebounding in basketball helps offset the randomness of poor shooting, but you have to balance that with transition defense.

On the other hand you could say bad random in sports is inconsistent reffing. If the strike zone is changing wildly from pitch to pitch, it becomes hard to account overcome that with skill.

Yep that's a good example of overcoming randomness using strategy.

MKB stacks with headshot as far as I know. It's an or situation, (If MKB or Headshot proc) = Stun

i love how people warmed up to this lol

u know u want it
I don't even know any of these characters!

Likewise, most of this thread flies over my head. And when I do find something I can comment on I realize that the new last page of the thread is at least five pages later and my comment would be old news.

So is anyone else in the Heroes of the Storm Tech Alpha?

If so we could sure use an OT or at least a place to swap Battletags (more XP if we game with friends).

After the Profile reset it would be nice to hear how we all fared the first time through and maybe what are plans are from here on out.

Battletag: Lyrick#1895

There actually already is a Heroes Alpha thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=784656

Before you pick a hero there are these little icons on the right side of his card that tell you what he is good at, they aren't always accurate ,but they will generally tell you what roles your hero can do

Also, dota people, stop saying its better then LoL . you may be saying it tongue in check, but its making things pretty toxic here.

League of legends takes more skill than dota because it's requires more speed to play

There's nothing more demanding than playing carry at the top level of league

Dota is harder than LoL because you need to fight the urge to fall asleep while waiting for your hero to turn around.

Are you kidding me

Jakiro is as league as it gets.

There's plenty of skillshots and a fair amount of wind ups, which is basically part of the skillshot calculation anyway.

I'm sick and tired of people who don't know shit about the superior moba trying to pretend they do

Since I'm luggage at both LoL and DotA, I think it's fair to say that both are hard for MOBA newbs, such as myself.

I'm currently on the DotA tip, but may go back and have a look at League again one day.

*shuffles back to ESO*

Man just because you're no good at MOBAs doesn't mean you have to go punish yourself like that. You're still a good person, don't do this to yourself!

Why does a criminal fish thing move faster when noone is watching? Surely he'd run faster when he is being chased. Makes no sense I tell ya.

Ah thanks for the answers, i'll keep a look out for those eye icons. I think my matchmaking may be skewed because i played quite a few games when it was in beta. I technically have 30 hours played, but there's such a large break between those matches that i may as well be completely new.

New League patch coming in a few days. I bet heal is going to get wrecked. I hope they buff the trinkets a little so that this 2/3/4v1 tower push strat dies out.

Why does buying boots make me faster when I play gyrocopter/corki?

Think Flintstones.
