iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

So my iPad Pro keyboard seems to have lost its dictation button. I checked in restrictions, keyboards and Siri and there’s no toggles that have disabled it.

Any ideas?

DON'T EVEN SUGGEST THIS.

I use app switcher all the time to scroll back through the week.

people just need to chill a bit and properly understand how iOS works.
I properly know how iOS works though. Nothing wrong with wanting to remove apps from ones app switcher.

I use “The Calculator” - but that’s a good point, what’s the logic of no calculator being installed on iPad as a default?

I really like Soulver; use it daily on my Mac and a few times a week on my iPhone, so imagine the iPad version would be as good.
I'll look into these. I just need it to plus, minus, multiply and divide lol. Keeping it real simple.

I can't remember which calculator app I got for the iPad but it allows for a widget to be placed on lock/notification thing so you don't need to open the app for quick number crunching.

They probably all do that now.

So, looks like if you want 4K iTunes content you have to have an ATV 4K? Or is this a placeholder until High Sierra ships with HEVC support? Surely it has to be, especially for iMac 4K/5K customers.

"Only the Apple TV 4K, connected to a 4K-compatible television with a compatible ultra-high speed HDMI cable, can play 4K content."

so... i turned off notifications on the lockscreen for almost all apps in iOS 10. Then when I unlocked the phone, all those 'missed' lockscreen notifications would be shown as banner notifications (sometimes individually, sometimes bundle up i.e. one banner notification saying I had 6 twitter notifications). Unfortunately I can't get it to work like that anymore on iOS 11 :? someone help?!

Also iOS 11 appears to restore Gmail push in Apple Mail (9to5Mac - iOS 11 beta - June '17)... Did this make it to the final release? Do I have to reset up my accounts or does it just work automatically now? I can't find the push option in settings

One cool thing that seems to have happened with this update is that it fixed my weird WiFi issue with my iPhone. A few updates ago, probably last year at some point, my phone started to have this issue where a page wouldn't load at all. Internet would just screech to a halt. I'd have to flick off the WiFI and the page or whatever I was trying to do would load almost instantly. Then I could turn WiFI back on and go for a while again. Haven't had that issue yet.

This x100000000000000000000

Tried forever to find an actual resolution somewhere and never was able to, I think I eventually narrowed it down to conflicting IP addresses? I could be totally wrong

Regardless it has stopped happening

My 7 Plus battery is garbage on this OS

Mine was for the first few days after I installed the GM. It seems to have gone back to sort of normal though. Not sure if it was indexing stuff for a few days or what.

This update seems to have killed my WiFi speeds at home though. I was getting 180 down before iOS 11 and now I’m seeing between 30-40.

Yeah I read that earlier as well. Even more surprising is that movies can have both HDR standards, just one, or none. Meaning if you buy a Dolby Vision title but your TV only does HDR10 and the Studio didn’t provide an HDR10 fallback, the Apple TV won’t do that for you. You just won’t get HDR

Also: "You can download a local copy of an HD movie, and you might be able to download HDR and Dolby Vision versions, but you can't download a 4K version."

That sucks for Mac users.

Yep, which confirms the iPad Pros are downloading 1080pHDR instead of 4K

On the plus side they seem to have updated the iPad Pro 10.5 tech specs to say that it supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision content, though the second generation 12.9 doesn’t say anything at all about that, which only further confuses things

Super shitty that you can't download 4K movies to watch on 4K/5K iMacs (or even MacBooks hooked up to 4K displays). Guessing studios demanded this for ~copy protection~

Reposting for the new page.

Hey everyone.

There any reason why the clock on my lock screen is gone? Turned my phone off & on earlier today to fix it and it was showing, but now it’s gone again lol.

Same when pulling down to see my notifications/notification center.

On a regular 7.

So many decisions on this update just leave me scratching my head. Its as if they changed things just to change them. Im really not liking 11 so far.

I have to agree. It just seems so inconsistent. I don't know why they have to have a bad release like this every couple of years.

In the past, it could partially be explained by a new piece of functionality. The 6 and 6 Plus screen size. 3DTouch. Removing the physical home button.

Many of 11's changes don't make sense to me, however, even with the X. Worse yet, based off the X impressions, they're not close to figuring out what the software experience even should be on the X.

oh dang.. so your TV HAS TO support both.. man...

also, yeah I believe this further cements that 4K videos are HEVC. Hence not being downloadable on macOS (probably until High Sierra releases).

edit - word.. the TCL p607 supports Dolby Vision AND HDR10. I'll be set when I grab one later this fall.

If that was the case, they would say "Only the 4K AppleTV and Macs running High Sierra can play 4K content."

This is some DRM crap being enforced by the movie studios. They seem to really not want any "open platforms" able to play 4K. PC's can't play 4K Blurays either.

This has only been an issue for me between iOS 10 and iOS 11 devices. It worked fine between iOS 11 and macOS as well as 11 and 11.
These were all iOS 11 devices. Hopefully it either sorts itself out - though we did try restarting all the devices - or Apple issues a swift fix. AirDrop is something that we use all the time.

Why is the mainstream media ignoring the elephant in the room here?
All these new features, all this new tech, but nobody is brave enough to discuss the most shocking mistake Apple has ever made.
The mistake is that you still can't set another calculator app to be launched from Control Center..
Add me to the list of people that prefers PCalc. Some people swear by Soulver, but it didn't really work for me.

"Automatic" only seems to check for mail when I open the app unless it's connected to a power source.
So you're still stuck with the terrible Gmail / Inbox apps if you want push notifications.

I feel like version numbers have gotten mostly useless especially with companies like Facebook updating their app like every single week with the same old "performance improvements and bug fixes" generic releases notes.

And many others are just plain wacky with the version numbers. Like Google Drive is at version 4.2017.35501, Gmail is version 5.0.170827, Chrome is at version 61.0.3163.73.

I'm glad they hid that personally, it's still just a tap away if you really want to see it.

Don't agree at all. I really like keeping track of versions for smaller apps, and for developers it can be helpful for users to know what version they're on. Apple shouldn't be designing for FB and Google's practices, because that's a race to the bottom.

Doesn't Microsoft's Outlook app work with Gmail?

This is BS. Physical ownership with digital voucher codes it is for another generation.

I’d rather just rip 4K Blu-rays and play them wherever I want with plex if this is studio bullshit.

You can't rip 4K BluRays right now, though. It'll happen eventually, but for the moment studios have locked it down enough that no one has found a way in.

I think we need to wait for real world confirmation of this because I don't see why a studio wouldn't provide a DV version and not a HDR10 version of a title since it's required for UHD disc.

Right. Whenever it happens I’m ripping the shit out of my movies. And voucher codes, yes.

No thanks to $20 4K movies that you can’t watch offline.

Sorry didnt read this whole thread, but the phone call quality is through the roof!
It sounds like its using facetime audio. Is it because im at home using my wifi?
Or is it always gonna be this good now?

Sounds like a glitch. I'd say go to settings, hit general reset. Should fix the issue. A general reset won't delete anything but you'll have to change some settings and stuff back.

Hm, I'll have to give that a try next time. Went ahead and turned it on/off again to reset, and hopefully it stays that way. Thanks!

Well that’s what the Apple support article says. And VUDUs movies only come with Dolby Vision, no HDR10 fallback at all

There’s FLAC support in iOS 11, at least! Just, you know, no way to actually get FLAC songs into the Music app.

The new version of iTunes supports FLAC

Did they merge media and ringer volume levels? Seems like I only have one right now when I hit the volume buttons

That’s a setting in Settings->Sounds and Haptics

ArKit didn’t work on white tables at all for me. Using SE. What a bummer.

It’s so cool when it works but it seems very unreliable making it something I will rarely use.

Getting dropped frames all over the place on 7+. Zooming apps, scrolling lists, particularly bad on the podcast app as the poorly thought out design on that forces me to scroll to the bottom of my episodes to see the feed ugh!
