iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

Guess I'm not upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 11. Just saw a bunch of comparison videos 10.3.3 vs 11 and clearly 11 has some noticeable sluggish here and there, especially on the camera app wich is what I use the most and the fact it drains battery faster than 10.3.3 is a deal breaker to me. Too bad I'm broke at the moment to upgrade to a new model of iPhone. Hope this can be improved on future updates but not holding my breath anymore :(

I hope in future update apple allows 3d press to turn off the wifi bluetooth completely. I don't understand these force changes not everyone agrees I certainly don't use wifi or bluetooth enough

I just updated my iPhone 6 and everything is faster. Even the camera app. The phone is flying right now.

I was expecting an update to the multitasking on the phone, and least more visually in line with the ipad’s Multitasking. Is it different on newer phones or the pluses?

It doesn't even need 3D press. First press > Disconnect, Second press > Disable, Third press > Enable+Connect.

Not hard at all.

On the plus side, I never use BT, and rarely disable WiFi, so it's not too annoying for me.

Is there a trick to doing the two finger tap? I just cannot get it to work. I've tried having it be close to one another or spread out or whatever, but nothing works.

Just a standard close two finger tap here (like on a laptop track pad) on my Air 2 iPad.
I've found some links refuse to open this way though, like the main deal squares on Slickdeals front page. I think it's due to the way the page is constructed.

I was worried it wouldn't really work on small links where both fingers can't touch it, but seems like it only matters that your left finger touches the link.

Just installed it on my iPad Pro 9.7 and iPhone 7.

Not really played with the phone yet, but touch gestures/swipes don’t feel as responsive as before on the iPad. :/ (probably my imagination)

I like the new dock, but not sure how I feel about the new Quicktype keyboard yet? Over all I think I like the changes.

My phone keeps jumping off of WiFi when I turn it off forcing me to keep reconnecting anytime I turn it on again. Super annoying.

How do you expect a phone to stay connected when you turn it off?

Or do you mean when ou sleep it? In my practice the iPhones have done this for a long time.

The flick keyboard is cool but I almost exclusively use the split keyboard in portrait mode.
They should add them there too.

Oh I just learned it today as well.
Kudos to that gaffer that originally posted it!

No flick keyboard on iPhone is confusing - stop fragmenting the experience apple

And I still hate symbols being in different positions on the flick keyboard compared to when you hit the symbols button

3D Touch menus on app icons are jittery as fuck for me and I'm on a 7+. I don't recall it being like this in the final stages of my 6S+ on iOS10.
Yeah I've noticed the opening animation for those menus isn't as smooth as they used to be on my 7 Plus too.

Went to try out Siri translate and of course it doesn't work with British English.

Reading the thread title I thought that it somehow ran MacOS software now.

Just got an iPad Pro 10.5 w/ the pen and Smart Keyboard less than a month ago, I am really happy with the iOS 11 update. It will most definitely replace my laptop as all I do on it is research/ light work and media consumption.

Any recommended apps I should download? :)

iOS 11 is great, just some minor issues I have experienced on the 7 Plus:

- Battery drainage, phone is losing power rapidly
- Notifications sometimes glitch where text goes outside the borders
- Animations seem slow, jittery or laggy sometimes
- Sometimes when going home, animation for app shrinking screws up

I don't think I like how the notification centre just brings you back to the lock screen. I liked it before when it was its own thing better I think. Feels weird to swipe down and get a different wallpaper.

I also hate they got rid of being able to swipe down for notification down while double tapping the home button for reachability.

But that way, you could never turn WiFi back on without disabling the radio entirely in between.
Which would make all your continuity features act wonky for a bit.

I still don't get why people are obsessed about turning their WiFi and BT radios off entirely. You do know that this doesn't make any meaningful impact to power consumption nowadays.
Turning off Wireless networking and not have the device search for open networks / other devices is what would save you power and that's what control center offers.

How can I make print-screens go directly to the roll instead of this whole new thing where I have to set if I want to save it? (it also blocks me from going to the camera icon)

Also, phone keeps turning bluetooth on when I restart it. Normal? Any way to change it?

Swipe left on the screenshot, it will save it to the roll and dismiss the hover image

Are images in safari not supposed to invert as well? They invert on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2

:(

It seems to just be poorly supported all around. Even though Twitter says they added support, most media is still inverted. Animated gifs specifically are not.

I'm getting the same behavior as you in Safari.

This update just murders my battery on my 6s+

I will give it another day but if today kills the battery like yesterday did then I'm gonna have to roll it back I think

Don’t know if this really has anything to do with iOS 11, but when I swipe left in my mailbox, it archives my mails. Can you change that so it deletes your mails instead? And also: where does my archived mails go? I don’t have a mailbox for archived mails on my gmail accounts. So I can’t find my mails that I’ve archived.

If you swipe towards the left delete should be an option

Settings -> Accounts and Passwords -> (Your Mail Account) -> Account -> Advanced Settings -> "Move Discarded Messages Into" (Deleted Mailbox / Archive Mailbox)

Whatever you picked here will show up as the hard swipe action in Zeyphersan's screenshot.

You still can't set left swipe to mark read & archive and right swipe to delete, though, can you? That's fundamental inbox management.

I actually like this method a lot more than the notification which was hard to reach with my lil hands even on the non-Plus. The problem will always be wanting to take multiple screenshots quickly and having the snap preview cover portions of the screen, you would think it just wouldn't show up in the next screen grab, or you could turn the option on or off to have it show up in the screen grab, or you could turn it off completely.

I've been super impressed with iOS 11 btw. Feel like it revitalized my 7 a bit.

The screenshot preview drawer doesn't appear in screenshots you happen to take while it's still visible on screen from a previous screenshot, it's by design so that you could do rapid screenshot takes and once you're done you can tap the drawer once and get edit options for all the screenshots you took at once.

One note though, if you perform edits on a screenhot in the drawer, those are saved as compressed jpg instead of the raw png that the screenshot function normally creates. If you're quality conscious for any reason it's worth keeping that in mind.

the standard is

Swipe left-to-right ("swipe right") -> Mark as Read
Swipe right-to-left ("swipe left") -> "More..." / Flag / Delete (or Archive, whatever your setting)

you can change which side does what, to a certain degree, but i do believe that an account is EITHER set to "archive" or "delete"

DAFUQ did they do to ibooks search?

I use ibooks to look up codes in a pdf to create reports at work.

When I did a search before, it would bring up every instance of the searches term, plus other text on the same line to provide context.

Now, if I search for the word "alarm", it will just show a numbered list Like:

1. Alarm

2. Alarm

3. Alarm

4. Alarm

5. Alarm

Etc

And that's all the info it shows. No context. No other info from that line of text.

And I need to select each one individually, then reactivate search every time to find out if that's the line im looking for out of the maybe 50 times the word "Alarm appears.

Why would they do this o_O

Ah, thanks alot!
But still no mail shows up in my archived mailbox.

Whatever font they switched the Reminders app to is really bad.
That lowercase a is far too similar to an o.
I know that sounds like a minor complaint but it’s a legibility issue.

Kinda weird that they hid the "auto-brightness" toggle within General ---> Accessibility instead of the usual "Display and Brightness."
Probably to hide the setting away to help minimize burn-in on the iPhone X.

On 7 plus and yeah.... something is draining this battery much faster
Usually it’s best to give it a day or two to ‘settle’ after a big OS update. Mine was really bad the first couple of days but seems much better now.
People that update right away probably use their phone a lot more the first few days after a big update too.

also, why turn it off - let the display do it's thing ... if, at a given moment, it's too bright, just turn down the brightness, if it's too dark, turn it up.
It's not like auto-brightness fights you on that - i don't think it will override your settings during that same situation.

I have a couple of family members with vision problems that prefer to have their devices set as bright as they can be at all times. They find it much easier to read the screen.
In that context, I suppose making it an accessibility option makes sense.

Updated the GBoard app and glide/swipe typing stopped working. I was about to freakout because of course now there's no way to downgrade apps. Thankfully it worked after I toggled full access on and off (deleted history and changed advertising id beforehand). But argh I don't know what I would do if Gboard stopped working. Is there any iOS keyboard out there for the iPhone SE with swiping and cursor control?

The iPhone shows you when the sound is too high (red/yellow markings). Any reason it’s not present on iPad?

Weird question I know, but just seems odd.

doesn't it only do so when wearing headphones? are you wearing headphones with the iPad when testing?

Not iOS 11 specific but is there no way to get a proper alarm when a timed reminder goes off? Farty little notification is too easy to miss

On iOS 10, whenever launching a game stopped the currently playing music, I would just open Control Center and tap the Play button to resume it. Now on iOS 11, the music widget in Control Center only shows the name of the game instead of the interrupted song. All controls are disabled.

Yep, forgot to mention that. It's with the regular ear pods for both devices.

have you checked whether or not that setting is activated on your iPad?

it's in Settings -> Music -> Volume Limit
i think that's what this setting does

edit: hmmm, being connected through my beatsX, regardless of whether i check the volume limit / EU volume limit, there's no red volume boxes, but rather the volume is hard capped :/

are you testing this on the same game as with prior to iOS 11?
because i do think that's on a game by game basis, whether or not the game allows you to play music during gameplay or whether it hijacks the music play controls altogether.

I did check the volume settings for the iPad and found nothing. It seems like it’s just a difference between the type of devices.

But then again, Apple’s antics in differentiating the devices has always been odd. Like the omission of calculator and a weather apps on iPad. Now iOS11 includes the iPhone weather app in widget form only...

oh boy, High Sierra can't come soon enough.

(i know i could just set the camera to take photos in compatibility mode, but fuck that!)
