Fair enough. Every other post in there seems to be about people experiencing apps break, or video not playing properly, or other garbage, and I guess Snow Leopard still feels so slick to me a year later that I felt no pressure to upgrade. I was on Windows XP on my main PC at home till....August of this year, lol.

But I'd like to try iCloud out, among other new Apple features, and many are restricted to Lion from what I can tell. $30's nothing compared to Windows OS prices, so, Ima give it a shot. Just bought it and DL'ing now.

The $30 for Lion isn't that big of a deal, but I think needing to pay for a new version of iPhoto in order to dump your pictures from PhotoStream is more annoying when it's free to get that feature in Windows.

So none of my apps synced, but i'm fine with that.

What was weird is that all my music, videos, and pictures synced, but not my contacts or apps.

When I did the restore my contacts came back, so now i'll just re-install my apps.

Oh wow, that IS garbage. iPhoto's been one of the only unintuitive messes in my whole 'Apple experience' over the last year (new macbook/phone). I'm not surprised at another hurdle there, haha.

Make sure you have iPhoto 9.2. You may need to run Software Update... from the Apple menu. I did. Just choosing "Check for update" in iPhoto wasn't enough.

Awesome that was it. Weird that it didn't update through iPhoto itself?

Isn't there meant to be a camera icon on the lock screen so that you can take photo's easier? Not showing up on my iPhone?

If you have a new MacBook, you have the latest iPhoto anyway.

Double click the home button. You should see an icon next to the slide to unlock.

What a mess the backup and sync process STILL is in iTunes. The download of iOS 5 was fine. The sync is a mess.

On my third try and ready to just skip backup and update to 5. Any downside to that?

Reminds me of why I only sync my iPad for OS updates. Thankfully there are enough wireless app workarounds so I never have to use iTunes to transfer files.

Sorry, when I said new, I meant relatively speaking. I got it in August 2010. It's iPhoto 8.something. '09.

So reader doesn't save the webpage in your memory like Instapaper, and when you access your reading list all it does is load the page in regular format? That's too bad.

Pro-tip: when the apps are getting restored, don't move anything around or else the restore will stop placing the apps in their original positions/folders.

lawd, what a messy mess.

How does one delete the copies of say, your photostream permanently off the iCloud servers and not just your local device?

Edit: Nevermind I figured it out... I have to go to icloud.com and login and hit my username and hit reset photostream

Cool. I still only see about two lines worth of text at a time unless I drag the keyboard down. So before, it didn't let you even do that? You had to sort of...leave and come back into the app or conversation to get rid of the keyboard and see the whole convo again? Brutal :(

edit-

Oh god, I just did the scroll down and dismiss the keyboard thing even while texting in a vertical orientation. It's so natural and...perfect. lol. Wow. I...already don't know how I was okay without this. Hahahaha.

It was terrible! I got around it by pressing "Edit", which would collapse the keyboard but it was not an elegant solution.

This was the perfect time for me to finally jump aboard the OS X train. I feel like my MacBook Air and iPhone are this perfect couple, so beautiful *cries*

Picasa is pretty much the best Windows equivalent to iPhoto, yes?

I can actually care about photos now thanks to 4S and iCloud :P

Hell yeah. I'm going Mac next time I need a computer. The "halo effect" they once talked about, where people were buying Macs thanks to iPod, is even stronger now thanks to iCloud.

Got it. I'm not terribly impressed so far. The only app that makes any difference to me is Reminders. It's pretty nice. A bit better (and much prettier) than the tasks app I was using before. Otherwise... Not much here that matters to me. Oh yeah, iCloud seems cool...?

Is there any way to get the stock ticker out of the pull down menu? It's really annoying.

I looked around, but couldn't find it before. Thanks!

Brrrllglggglgghhh.

6th try updated to ios5. Restored apps to phone and nothing works/starts. Download updates to apps in iTunes and still no go. Restart phone, nada.
Then back iTunes and sync the apps. Boom! The updates I downloaded were not installed after all. After sync were back in business.

Ironically they are having a "Fail Day" here in Finland.

Could be Cloud Reader. I have tons of stuff in there.

ComicGlass went so far as to disable cloud backups (which I think also disables local backups of CGlass content), so yeah, that's probably the culprit...

Can you disable iCloud altogether?

Honestly, I'm perfectly happy with DropBox and the way my iPad works. I just want the new gestures.

I'm such a photo and Instagram whore that my camera roll exceeded all the iCloud space available. It won't back up lmao.

In need of some spring cleaning~

Yeah, you have to go through some steps to use it so it certainly can't be required.

So here are some random thoughts about iOS5.

1) Why do we still not have any type of grouping in Contacts? It would be nice if there was a way where I can segregate my contacts into say like Work, Family, Friends, etc.

2) Movies redeemed by codes don't show up as purchased for redownload

3) How do you clear the notification badge in Newsstand? It's been there all day today

4) Why is the orientation inverted for Apple's Trailers app?

5) If you do a backup in iTunes, and you have photos pushed to your computer through Photo Stream, are you storing that data twice? In OSX? In Windows?

6) It's awesome that they updated how Bluetooth audio works so that it now displays information about what is playing on the device that you're streaming to. I hope apps like Pandora get updated to support this functionality.

By the way.. are we supposed to leave iTunes running for the wifi sync automatic backup to occur?

I always thought iTunes' "always on" options were lackluster. I'm talking about PC, but I seem to remember it was similar on Mac.

There's no great way to have iTunes autorun at Windows startup without it starting maximized (there's a script to make it auto-minimize after a few seconds, but it's a ghetto hack workaround). And "minimize to system tray" is nice.. but what about it I X out of there? :P

There needs to be a better way to have it run as an always-on process.

After you upgrade to IOS5 it asks you on the device immediately afterwards to finish off the setup, you can choose to not use the iCloud in the setup

You can do that via the Mac's Address Book. Make the groups there and sync back.

Silly that we can't do it in the phone though.

I hate this aspect when it comes to streaming content to an AppleTV. I've always hated the whole client/server model of devices communicating in certain situations.

I've had progrms that run just fine in that way... ie. VLC servers, or Orb media streaming. It really isn't hard to make an "autostart on OS startup minimized in system tray" option, but some programs stubbornly refuse this for whatever reason.

I can accept that my computer must be 'on' to communicate with the client.... any other step is silly.

Why does my lock screen still look the same? I thought they added a camera button and stuff?

Notifications for "Mail" to show up on Lock Screen is also turned off by default, you can turn that on if you want.

Oh I didn't know that. Is there any way to set that up via iCloud.com? I'm not using the Mac Address Book to store/organize my contacts. I tend to manage my contacts pretty much from my phone.

OH LAWD!!!!!!!!!

They FINALLY fixed the issue with landscape texting! Now I can actually move the keyboard down the screen to see more texts..before I would have to use "Edit" to see the text. On landscape the keyboard just took up so much screen real estate that you can only see one text at a time. It was the worse feature ever, and enough to make me dread text convos.

God, iOS just keeps getting refined. Chiseled. I love it.

And I only really need a weather widget, so this is perfect.

But how do you collapse the keyboard?

I just hate that different things use a proprietary method of having a server software needing to be installed to talk to various clients. You pretty much get a computer that has to be always on running all these different processes to handle so many different situations that eats up resources on the computer. Always been a much bigger fan of just supporting standard network shares instead of server software.

I wanted to update my 3GS now, so that I could use iCloud to make backups of everything what I need to make the switch to the 4S at the end of the week.

Now that iTunes tells me it makes a backup of everything before even updating to iOS5:
Do I even need to do another backup via iCloud?

Sync 'em up to a computer, make groups in the application you use to have contact info on your computer, sync it back. It will preserve your newly-created groups.

Given the people going "oh god, it erased my stuff", and given how simple it is, I'm getting the impression that NO ONE syncs. Which seems kinda silly.

Don't use iCloud to backup your device unless you want to fill up your 5GB of space in no time.

They changed the layout of the music section? I liked the way it was before. Now it takes more work to get to the podcasts page. Can I customize it in anyway? Doesn't seem like it.

My backup file is only 30MB. The 5GB limit exempts things like the camera roll, so how can backing up even approach 5GB? Does app data add up that fast? I'm curious what other types of things end up in that file since I've never opened it.

Just checked, yep, it will backup the entirety of any app that uses inserted content, unless that app was modified not to support cloud backups. So if you loaded GoodReader or CloudReader to the brim, that's going to go straight to your Cloud cap...
